Icesurfer 75 Report post Posted January 16, 2009 As good as Ozzie was as a backup last year he had only 4 shutouts. This year Detroit has had some defensive lapses and yet Conklin already has 5 shutouts. I think any goalie in the league would have better stats playing behind Detroit's number one defense and probably end up with their best career years! Go Conklin! Go Wings! Yzersyukstromberg 0 Report post Posted January 16, 2009 Babcock should consider giving Conks the lion's share of the starts moving through the final 38 games of the regular season...a split of about 23 for Conks and 15 for Ozzy would make good sense...the guy has earned it, and if he keeps it up, he'd deserve serious consideration for the starting nod in the playoffs. I know that Osgood is a proven commodity, but for some reason, he's just not bringing the same level of goaltending to the rink on a nightly basis that he brought last season. I hope Ozzy turns his season around, and makes it a tough decision for Babs.

digitaljohn88 4 Report post Posted January 16, 2009 (edited) Conklin is playing well, but I think a 50/50 split remains our best option. I don't like that he's completely unproven in the playoffs (let alone any pressure situation), but if Ozzy can't elevate his play before the end of the season we might have to go with Conklin. SDavis35 140 Report post Posted January 16, 2009 I remember last year when Conks had to step it up for Pittsburgh in place of Fleury... feels like he hits his stride when the pressure's on. Most of his career is still only regular season as he's never been a starter in the palyoffs. It would be interesting and I wouldn't mind playing the same cards as last year and switching up if Oz can't get it together in playoffs. Two solid goalies is all a team like this needs

Two solid goalies is all a team like this needs My point was more that he's never had the pressure of being "the guy". Last year, he was a fill-in until Fleury came back, and this year it's been fairly public that Osgood will eventually get more starts to get ready for the playoffs. We don't know if it will actually happen of course, that's just what was said a month or so ago. I'm not saying things don't change, and I think Conklin is doing great, but I just think it's best to approach the situation with caution, and give Ozzy every chance to get going. Nightfall 871 Report post Posted January 16, 2009 What I like to see is the fact that Conklin only had 3 shutouts prior to joining the wings. That means, in 111 games prior to this season, he had 3. Yet he has played 21 games for the wings and gotten 5. That just goes to show you not only how well he is playing, but how good the wings are in front of him. Conklin came up with 2 beautiful stops last night alone off odd man rushes. Its not all the Wings D, but when you are playing with confidence, as a goalie, any save is possible. cusimano_brothers 1,655 Report post Posted January 16, 2009 The rest of the League wishes they had the "goaltending problem" the DRW has right now. And make no mistake: Conklin stepping in last season when Fleury when down kept them in a position where they could compete in the East.

CrabCZ 0 Report post Posted January 16, 2009 Ozzy needs 5 SO in a row to match his SO, 10 SO to match his GAA and 12 to match his SV%. The difference is huge.
dat's sick 1,002 Report post Posted January 16, 2009 Conks is a perfect fit for this team. He has that mentality that makes him able to stand without a shot against him for ten minutes and then come up with a big save when a chance arises. And he seems like a great guy too. Actually we probably have two of the coolest goaltenders in the league right now.
MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted January 16, 2009 Conklin's agent has got to be loving the stats he's putting up. A negotiating dream.
cusimano_brothers 1,655 Report post Posted January 16, 2009 Weren't they actually struggling at that point then he came in and they got on a hot streak that turned their season around? I looked up the Penguin Media Guide online on their website. Fleury went down around Christmas '08; his last game played at that time was 23/12 and Pittsburgh's record was 18W-16L-2OT. Conklin then played the next 11 games, then switched with Sabourin for a few games. Fleury's first game back was 04/03; at the time, Pittsburgh's record was 26W-17L-37OT. In the period from Game #36 to Game #66, Pittsburgh went 18W-7L-5T. And, they sure wish they had Conklin now!
Heroes of Hockeytown 694 Report post Posted January 16, 2009 The more players performing well, the better. The defense has stepped it back up (disregarding that aberration in Texas) and the goaltending has improved too. I've been very impressed with Conklin lately. Ms_Hockey 0 Report post Posted January 16, 2009 I love Ozzie to death, but I feel like he's overworking the puck a lot this season. I'd love to see Conks in net on Saturday. Our entire team has stepped up. Our fourth line scoring? Twice? Hopefully, this is the beginning of their "wake up". I'm impressed with Conklin and even more impressed with the whole team. elriqo28 2 Report post Posted January 16, 2009 I just like the fact that the wings keep winning with Goalies that cost 2 Million or less every year while most teams are shelling out 5-6 million for a goalie and just aren't getting done. They have a great system in place where defensive play comes first and as long as that stays we don't need a premiere goalie, because, well our defense makes our goalies premiere.
