Bettman suspends Lidstrom, Datsyuk 1-game each

What are you talking about, a hypothetical? Must be because the Wings have the third best record in the league and it's January. The Columbus game is not a "game that matters".

The All Star game is more important to the NHL than the Jackets vs Wings game is. If there were no NHL, you would never have heard of Pavel Datsyuk and Nick Lidstrom would still be in Sweeden. I don't think asking them to come showboat in one exhibition game is asking too much of them.

I'm great at what I do. Occasionally my employer expects me to make a presentation or shake some hands at a meet and greet. While it isn't exactly opart of my job, it is in the best interest of my employer, and also in the best interest of my industry - so I man up and do it. Yes - I could die in a plane crash on the way, but who said life is without risk?

Yes but the players are what brought the game to this level, if not for great players doing great things in the regular season the league let alone the asg would be moot.

Dats and Lids are employed by the Red Wings therefore you comparison of you and the players is incorrect.

The NHL is the league, sort of like the SEC oversees the stock market, but if I am a trader on the floor I work for Fidelity not the SEC.

My commitment is to my employer, if they ask me to attend I can say no, but I know the risks. If I am the best trader in the world and the SEC wants me to speak at a convention and I say no, they have no jurisdiction or right to punish.

When are the winter olympics again? those are good years because it OMITs the ASG from the NHL schedule!!!

2010. But it may be the last time NHL players get to play.

Personally, I like having NHL players in it. It gives me someone to root for besides my home countries (US, Canada), but that's for a different thread.

I'd like to have a break in the winter for the players without the ASG joke. Or at least make it not a joke.

Right, but the players sign an NHL contract, not a Detroit Red Wings contract.

If you were truly sick, you would miss your meet and greet, it's part of your job, but when it comes to health or injury you more than likely would not be able to make it. Your job, I would guess, has no physical elements to it. It's hard to make an analogy from hockey to powerpoint presentations and shaking hands.

If Datsyuk has a hip flexor injury, the team and the team's fans take priority. Having him healthy for the home stretch is more important to me, as a fan, and the team itself than having him "showboat" at an all star game that is a farse in the first place. The very same goes for our TOP defensemen who has been dealing with an elbow issue for who knows how long now.

Get healthy, rest up, take the BS all star game and one game suspension off and possibly be ready for Thursday if you feel ready to go then. As a fan, winning games and preparing for the playoffs is priority one, the all star game (which should be held after the season ends) is priority 14.

You are wrong. The NHL has every right to suspend Lidstrom and Datsyuk. If they did not, wings brass would certainly fight it.

I don't do stupid meet and greets and such because my boss makes me, but because it is the right thing to do. I have been rewarded handsomly by my industry for my work - it is an honor and a privilage to help them to grow our industry. - even when it's inconvinient. That is the attitude that Lids and Datsyuk should have - if they can't play, fine, at least show up. You're rich and you get to play a game for a living - one extra weekend should not be too much to ask. Smile and be gracious, it's what we should expect of good men in their shoes.

If it's such a big deal that they be there than all NHL players should be required to be there. That would be better for the fans and they could really turn the skills competition in to something special by allowing more players to take part.

If they are truly injurred, I'm fine with them not playing. Unless they're in traction though, they should be expected to show up.

Right, but the players sign an NHL contract, not a Detroit Red Wings contract.

Are you sure the contracts are not overseen by the NHL, I do believe the team draws up the contract, negotiates with the players to term and length but the contract is with the team, not the NHL.

It may be a contract that has to be approved by the league but that is to keep fair play. Right that is why the NHLPA is there to make sure the League is not favoring the Owners and the BOG is there for visa versa?

At least that was my understanding, if not than I retract my last statement and just say that if I call out sick, no matter what is going on my employer can not force me to show up. They can put parameters around when I must call out by, which is similar to what is going on here. But I still think it is a BS suspension.

They spend the weekend signing autographs for the actual fans that put their ass in the seats in their home arean allowing them to get paid... if they are forced to do "community service" by the NHL. Montreal means nothing to us... I blame CANADA!!!

WTF this is ridiculous. The All Star game hasn't been a big deal for years now. It's getting pathetic and who cares that they are skipping out. I'm sure they didn't want to risk getting more injured then they already are due to a game that doesn't mean much.

If the fans really cared about the other players being there they should have voted in other players besides Montreal's whole team. This is what you get for not voting dats and lids into the starting lineup :P Maybe if the fans wanted them to be there they should have voted for them.

It is not as simple as "showing up".

This involves getting on a plane, traveling to another country and going from event to event amongst thousands of people, as well as staying in a hotel room away from your family and doctor.

I'm sorry - but if I am injured or sick, that is about the last thing that would be good for me.

Exactly, another good point. The fans didn't vote Datsyuk or Lidsrom in, so this whole idea of them robbing the fans is moot. The fans would rather have Toews and Niedermayer there over two players who deserve to be in the starting lineup. Maybe if the voting wasn't a bunch of crap in the first place, the all star game might actually be a pretty good time.

It's not a suspension for not playing, it's a suspension for not showing up at all. They aren't being asked to play, they're being asked to sign a few autographs and do a few photo-ops.

Bettman's move to suspend Datsyuk and Lidstrom is more destructive to the fans that give a s*** than them missing the All-Star game. Tell me, who wins in this situation? Its just Gary throwing a tantrum because he has planned a party, invited everyone and no one wants to go. "But who's going to play Yahtzee?"
