Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 (edited) So its pretty much set in stone that Hossa won't be back next year, but I was thinking it would be pretty awesome (however unlikely it may be) that Hossa goes somewhere else for a one year deal, then a couple years from now he re-signs with the Wings with the Lids money. And that got me to thinking: when Lidstrom's contract is finished, would you prefer we use it to re-sign Lidstrom for another year, or get Hossa back. And yes, this is purely hypothetical. Just a fun mental experiment, I guess. Edited January 23, 2009 by Echolalia
ComradeWasabi 109 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 Lidstrom. That was a trick question, right?
Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted January 23, 2009 No. Lidstrom is past his peak, and even if he is still the best defensman today, who knows what people will predict to happen with him two years from now. Or Hossa for that matter.

ComradeWasabi 109 Report post Posted January 24, 2009 If Lidstrom is still playing then there is zero reason for the Red Wings not to sign him. Zero.
Icesurfer 75 Report post Posted January 24, 2009 Are you kidding????...... We will prop Lidstrom up on crutches or in a wheel chair if we have to when he is 55 years old. As long as he is breathing we will NEVER let him retire. And even then he will still be the best defensemen in the league. When he retires I will switch to watching badminton instead of hockey.....LOL.
StaticWithABeat 0 Report post Posted January 24, 2009 The thought of the Red Wings without Lidstrom frightens me. The Wings had the good fortune of allowing other stars like Yzerman and Shanahan to shift to more supporting roles thanks to the ascention of Datsyuk and Zetterberg, but Lidstrom will continue to be their most important player until the very end, and his departure will be devastating. I'd rather not find out just how devastating for as long as possible.

ehorn3 2 Report post Posted January 24, 2009 Sign Chelios!?! No really go with Lids everytime. Dats and Zetterberg can carry the offense

CdnWingsFanEh 2 Report post Posted January 24, 2009 Don't kid yourself guys, Lidstrom with a walker in the corner would be pretty bad-ass. Of course his PIMs would go up, what with swinging the walker around, and all. But he would create an aura of fear on the red wings that the team really hadn't seen since the days of Probert... My vote definately goes to Lidstrom, but the above scenerio only reinforces it.

thedisappearer 291 Report post Posted January 24, 2009 As long as Lids wants to play, we will sign him, for whatever he wants to make. I think he'll start taking 1 year contracts for a slightly reduced amount, $5-6m, going down a little each year. But Lids will *NEVER* wear another NHL franchise's sweater. This is a fact. Also, can I see the stone where it says Hossa will not return? I know it would be difficult, but it seems to me as likely as him coming here in the first place, and well... he's here. Winged_Wheeler 3 Report post Posted January 24, 2009 That's not what he has said, and that's not what the salary cap says. ??? Why do you think signing Zetterberg is taking longer then expected? The plan is to convince Z that if you take less, because Hossa is willing to, that your chances of winning are going to be increased.

Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted January 24, 2009 Huh? You're kidding right? He went from a Norris Trophy to past his peak in 1 year. The fact that he still won the Norris doesn't mean that he's not past his peak. I would take Lidstrom from a couple years ago to today's Lidstrom in a heartbeat, and I would apply that to just about any 38-39 year old hockey player. Winged_Wheeler 3 Report post Posted January 24, 2009 You flunked math? I knew I would expect that from you. My way of thinking of the situation is telling Zetterberg if you take less we'll be able to sign Hossa. Hossa wants to win and is comfortable where he is now. He loves the European style hockey and feels like this is the team that will fulfill his dreams of winning a Stanley Cup. Zetterberg is going to be the captain either way. Datsyuk is not going to be the captain, he can barely speak English. How are you suppose to do press conferences? You remember last year who was sitting with Lidstrom? Zetterberg. Draper is not getting it, all he does is face offs.
SDavis35 140 Report post Posted January 24, 2009 Umm... resign a scorer vs. resigning our captain and #1 D-man? Lidstrom's future with the Wings will depend on Lidstrom and only Lidstrom. Either he retires at the end of his contract, or he plays with the wings. Hopefully he'll take a paycut like other older players. The way the wings are set up: Priority #1 is defensive responsibility. Scoring can come later, and we already have solid 2-way players in dats and Z, plus a solid group coming up. No contest imo. Ms_Hockey 0 Report post Posted January 25, 2009 Lidstrom is going to stay with the Wings for the rest of his career. Of that, I'm about 90% sure. Partly because of his no trade clause in his contract and partly because he's already taken quite a bit less in $$$ to stay with the Wings. His allegience is here. There's no doubt in my mind about that. As for the question - Lidstrom all the way.
