BlueMonk 102 Report post Posted February 5, 2009 should the league take a look at the gang up on zetterberg at the end of the game? All 3 of them cheapshotting him with crosschecks right in the spot of a recent injury? There not even going for the puck either thats what really gets me.. The league won't do anything. Of more concern is that his teammates just stood there and watched 3 guys rough up their star forward who just signed a 12 year contract without any response at all. It's a bad omen to see so little emotion from the team.
puckloo39 5,686 Report post Posted February 5, 2009 Well I don't have stupid FSN plus so I missed it. Glad they won. I won't even comment on Ozzie since I didn't see the game. yahoo had a live stream, but you didn't miss much this game. I mean, aside from Wayne being unhappy -- but that, you've seen before. puckloo39 5,686 Report post Posted February 5, 2009 "We're still the champs and people have to realize that" Lol The royal "we". Yes, they are still the champs, with amazing offense. Hossa must stay.
dat's sick 1,002 Report post Posted February 5, 2009 I LOVED Babcock's post-game comments. He pretty much confirmed the 1st and 2nd line will continue to look like they did today, and he was pretty harsh on Ozzie, in a subtle way.
Heroes of Hockeytown 694 Report post Posted February 5, 2009 Eh, you know what, I'm done being frustrated and upset with this goals against thing. If the Wings can get sixteen 5-4 wins this spring, they can give up as many breakaways and softies as they want. They won this many games so far playing this way, maybe they're onto something? titanium2 867 Report post Posted February 5, 2009 For the people taunting Pittsburgh earlier, Tampa Bay choked on that lead and lost 4-3 in OT. F!! Wha...? Why taunt them? They're already 10th? in their conference isn't that punishment enough? Just forget about them.
VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted February 5, 2009 I try not to be pessimistic, I've always been one of those fans who thinks the Wings will come back from being down 3-0 with 3 minutes left in the game to win before OT (and have been proven right on several occasions), but I think it's fair to say that they're not going to start playing any better until the trade deadline. Every season we ***** for Holland to make a move, and he almost always makes the right one. So I won't predict whether we pick someone up or not. I will say, however, that for the rest of the regular season, if we don't move some people, we're going to be on the losing end of 5-4 games come playoff time when the other teams pick up their intensity, unless we pick up ours. That being said, it's entirely possible the Wings will just turn it on come playoff time. They've done it before. So let's not count them out, but yeah, there's definitely disappointment and a sense that something must be done.
Wingsallwin 0 Report post Posted February 5, 2009 This is exactly how I feel. And yeah, about that Toronto game, I remember that one vividly. Not much has changed since then, thats the sad part. I had a sinking feeling when we retained the ENTIRE roster from the cup winning roster that this would happen. Did I really think it would, like you said, after doing nothing more than Hossa? No way! But it was always a lingering thought in the back of my mind. The Wings had Vladdy to fight for in 98. This year, all they have is the smug sense of success fresh in their minds. The Wings should've made some moves - maybe swapped Flip for Bernier, let Stuart go, bring up Ericsson and/or Helm, let Kopecky go, and add a guy to replace Drake. Not too many big moves, but enough to replenish the desire and hunger. The first game that we lost against the Leafs pretty much told us what the first 10 games would be. But you forgot some teams have been IMPROVED since their slump or bad performance on each game during the beginning or the start of the season but the Wings problems have not been solved yet at all: Kronwall,Osgood, brutal PK. I never mentioned we should shake up our whole rosters but we need some changes. At this point, 50 games are passed and Osgood is still OSBAD, there is no need anymore to watch him. Give Conklin a chance to start. Besides, according to my view, the only game that our 4th line played good was game against the Kings, 4-0. Except for that game, I kept mentioning myself that we have to test some GR. I mentioned this in the beginning of the season also but some people here said our GR are not ready to be in the NHL. What I was pointing that time was surely only testing some players. Was it that hard? That period was the time we had a long way to go but now we test our GR. It is never appropriate. The only strong part of this team right now is infinite scoring machines. Except for that, especially on some D men and Osgood, they have been queasy. The bigger problem is that they have not shown any proof that they are improving now, still remain with a terrible performance every game.

esteef 2,679 Report post Posted February 5, 2009 Was it me or did Murph have a couple of good jokes tonight from between the benches? Something about Jovo's speed on the first goal, then about how the $1 for Draper was "back-then" money, hell it's probably $5 now! esteef
VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted February 5, 2009 It's Ozzie. I've never once seen him get rattled up about anything. He's almost TOO laid back. He's been rattled a lot this season. One of his strengths last season was that when he let in a bad goal, it didn't bother him. I don't know about tonight (I worked and missed the game) but it's been often enough for me to notice that when he lets goals in, he looks extremely irritated. Much was made of his re-training himself during the Cup run last year and how he no longer let things faze him and stayed focused. He's not doing that anymore for whatever reason. Andy Pred 48 337 Report post Posted February 5, 2009 The facts are we struggled to beat a patched up Yotes team that should have been buried once we went 4-2 up, Wings teams of old would have ran out 5/6-2 tonight. Plus side is that Helm looked hungry out there, Hossa is on fire and surely must get a hat trick soon and Babs put Z and Dats together. Looking at the performance of others tonight, I'm getting a tad worried by the same old mistakes and breakdowns happening over and over. However with the prospect of the roster growing once the deadline passes, certain players will not only be playing for their spot but some for their futures. Saturdays line up is going to look interesting, esp if Ericsson gets the call as well. A certain Nik jnr may find himself in the bo watching the game with messers Maltby and Kopecky. would like to see a line up of; Datsyuk Zetterberg Leino Cleary Franzen Hossa Sammuelsson Filppula Hudler Helm Draper Abdelkader Lidstrom Ericsson Rafalski Lilja Chelios Lebda Conklin Osgood Probably not able due to cap issue, but if Homers gunna be out a while then he can go on IR's which will open up enough cap. I think you are talking about the end of the season 01-02 when we won the cup. Last 10 games, we won only one game but you forgot that team played better than this in the same time. There is no clear evidence that we will have a success in the playoff. Why are some people saying we will get hot in the start of the playoff? Just because we won the cup last season? We forgot we were brutal during the playoff since 01-02, got upset by low seeded teams.

That's how I read it! on a side note, Marion Hossa MUST be re-signed. He is TOO good to let go! He makes the game look effortless! Sorry Huds and Flip, but I'm signing Hossa... Judging by what Babs said in the postgame, the first 2 lines are very likely to remain the same. Which is a good thing imo, they worked really great today. The 3rd wasn't bad either, but I'm sure that and the 4th could be juggled a bit. Bring in Leino on the 3rd and put Helm on the 4th instead of Kopy maybe. And Abby instead of Maltby. Would be something.
Aussie_Wing 354 Report post Posted February 5, 2009 Just thought I'd point out that with his 2 assists tonight Filppula has passed his assist total from all of last season, in 27 fewer games. Sure the goalscoring is way down but he actually has a higher PPG than last year. Interesting eh?

Yep He also said the guys "were able to pick up Ozzie". He pretty much said what I felt as well, that there weren't many bad defensive breakdowns and if Ozzie had just kept his legs together we would have won 4-2 or more. Hossa would be great to resign, but if it's at the expense of Hudler and Flip (and probably Franzen)? I'm not sure. Depth is more important than any one player. A night like this Hossa seems invaluable though.. it all depends on what he's willing to take.
Datsyerberger 279 Report post Posted February 5, 2009 Officiating in this game was god-awful and was the only reason the game's score was as high as it was. Without some of the horrible calls, I'm feeling something more like 3-1 / 4-2 / 3-2 out of this one.

He's had a weak season, atleast compared to what my expectations were, but when he gets the chance to play on the top 2 lines with good linemates, he shows his qualities.
