By far the worst this season anyway .. I didnt see the interview with Babs after the game but did he mention anything? I couldnt believe the tripping call Cleary got on Doan .. Or the "slashing" call Fil got. Complete and udder joke. That hold was justifiable by my account.

I've got to agree 100% with HoH here. That was a ticky-tack call that Mickey would've been enraged by if it were called on the Wings.

I'm happy that Nick scored so I can't say I dislike the call. But... I would be doing the same thing as Gretz if they called that on the Wings (see the BS call on Dats that was identical to this situation in the finals against the Pens).

I agree with you here too. There were several poor penalties call on both teams but the last one cost Phoenix the game. Gretzky did what every coach would do in an emotional game like that, he felt the ref's needed to hear his opinion and he gave it to them. What would people rather him do? Stand there with a puzzled look on his face while stroking his mustache like Dave Lewis used to do.... see where that type of coaching got him. It was a weak penalty at a crucial point in a tight game that ultimately cost them 2 points.

Players usually like it when the coach gets going like that. Shows he's behind his players to a huge degree.

Quite frankly, I think it shows that he cares very deeply about his team.

Wayne was always a whiner. I can't say I was surprised in the least bit seeing him cry his eyeballs out to the refs. That call that essentially lost them the game, was really a better call than many of them earlier in the game. But yeah, he's just doing what comes natural.

I think it would be very frustrating for Gretzky as a coach -- the guy has the highest "hockey IQ" of anyone who has ever played the game. He just knew where to be and saw plays unravel ahead of time like a chess grandmaster. That has to be rough coaching people who can't do that and can't see what he sees for the life of them - you certainly can't teach it.

I agree Mickey would have blwon a gasket, but where was the call for interference the beginning of the game? I think Hossa dumped and chased and he was slowed down and Mickey said something like "what game are we calling here?". Then they have the 3 horses*** calls on the Wings.

I agree that bulls*** calls go both ways but seems those crappy ticky-tack interference and hooking calls get called A LOT more on the Wings.

While seeing Gretzky blow a gasket was obviously entertaining, if the team was reversed in this situation, plenty of people here would be wanting to give Babcock a bear hug for letting the referees have an earful on a call like that late in the 3rd period if it happened to Detroit.

Some of it to is for next time, coaches for whatever reasons believe that if you really get on a guy for a call that in the next contest he may be more likely to call things your way.

I do think Gretzky is in a very tough position.

It's rather sad for me to see probably the greatest hockey player ever trashed on a hockey message board. So the guy did not fight - so what?

Despite Gretzky's superior talent, he worked his ass off when he played, unlike someone like Mario Lemeuix who coasted on talent his first few years and smoked two packs a day.

Say what you will about the era, and deflate the points if you want, but the fact was, despite everyone scoring high in that era, Gretzky was head and shoulders above everyone. In some years, he was scoring as much as 40% higher than his closest competition. To put that into perspective, as great a year as Ovechkin had last year, he was only 5% higher than the competition.

Granted, I was super tired when it happened, but it looked to me like Hossa got legitimately taken down, no matter how subtle it was, so I don't think it's the type of call Mickey would have gone ballistic on. Maybe Gretzky had a legitimate beef with the call, but I don't think so. I think it was more of a "How are you gonna call anything this late?" type deal and not a "How are you gonna call THAT?" type blow up. Regardless of his career as a player, Gretzky really does manage to look like a whiny ***** pretty much every time the Yotes and Wings meet up.

I second this. 99WG was insanely talented in all aspects, a genius on the ice really. Wasn't the fastest, didn't have the best shot but that guy saw everything from a different vantage point then the rest of the league. I don't see voicing your opinion as whining, especially when it was a terrible call that lead to your team losing a hard fought game.

Good coaches like Babcock keep their protests within reason. Wayne looked like a crazed parent spitting hot-dogs at a junior game.

He's always been that way - even as a player. I guess I just didn't expect anything else from him. There's a number of coaches who aren't afraid of vocalizing their opposition.
