2009 Detroit Tigers Season Thread

Why must Fernando Rodney make every save an adventure? I can't imagine how nervous I will be if he comes in during a playoff game. He gets the job done though.

Justin Verlander is a true ace. I probably would have said Greinke deserves the Cy Young for sure a few weeks ago, but I don't know how anyone can ignore what JV means to the Tigers. 16 wins, 200+ strikeouts, has really been pitching deep in starts and, best of all, he gives the Tigers a real chance to win almost every fifth day.

Six game lead over the Twins now. I just wish there were five games left.

5 straight losses to the Royals, 4 in the past week. Imagine what the Tigers lead in the division would be with even a couple wins against the worst team in the AL. The Royals always give the Tigers fits, but this is borderline pathetic now.

Washburn is really, really bad. If he is hurt, then they should just get him out of the rotation until the knee feels better. He is doing absolutely no good right now. These are the times where the Tigers lack of pitching depth kills them and you look at Willis, Bonderman and Robertson for producing nothing.

Eddie Bonine tonight! Seems like a nice guy, but not someone I want starting in a pennant race.

I don't know about the rest of you but I didn't exactly have dry eyes watching Ernie's little speech tonight. The golden pipes still sounded as golden as ever, and he's still walking around looking pretty healthy. He's kept himself in great shape - he doesn't dodder around like most people his age. And as always with Ernie, he made it about everyone else instead of himself. The man's a complete saint.

As for the Tigers, nice little win tonight. The bullpen looked good, especially Lyon and Rodney. Magic number down to 13. One more game and then the truly murderous stretch begins.

I was at the game last night. Couple of things stood out to me ....

* Mags threw a strike to second and stopped rally-style momentum. Glad to see his arm is

working fine.

* Brandon's knees either failed or he had bad judgment ... twice. Either way, I am a little

concerned.

* Lots of stranded baserunners. Too many. That's not what ya like to see in September.

* Pitching. Both teams ran up a lot of full counts. Tigers pitching needs to zero in on the

strike zone, the bullpen especially.

* Fernando with a 1,2,3 ninth. What, no rollercoaster ride?

Bottom line, imho, a critical win last night. The boys need to build on this and really get the momentum going to win the Division and beyond. Go Tigers!

Wow, glad the Tigers are done with the Royals. The Tigers biggest strength (starting pitching) is going downhill quickly now too. Jackson looks burned out and we don't even have a decent 4th or 5th starter anymore.

The Tigers need at least one win in Minnesota. A sweep to the Twins would be big trouble.

Tiger killers? We're 9-8 against them. Too much credit.

Tigers lost their last 2 series' against KC. And one of those series was a sweep by the Royals. Yeah we beat em' in August, but it's late September now. Not much time left to gain more ground. Can't lose a series against a team with one of the worst records in baseball, when you only have a 4 1/2 game lead and 4 more series against Twins/WhiteSox. I for one am VERY happy we don't have to play KC anymore.

Agreed. Going .500 against the worst team in the AL is nothing to be proud of. On top of that, the Royals won 5 of the past 6 games against the Tigers when the games mattered most in September. Even if the Tigers go 3-3 in those games, that's a six game lead heading into Minnesota instead of just four ahead.

The Tigers pitching really scares me right now. The offense isn't consistent enough to bail out poor starting pitching.

where, oh where, have the Tigers' bats gone?

Yeah what a joke. I love how "professional" baseball players all of the sudden can't hit the broad side of a barn for 5 straight games. Even if we're lucky enough to make the playoffs, we'll get our asses swept by the yankees (a team that can actually make contact with a baseball).
