betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted September 30, 2009 It's called reality. Welcome to it. We were LUCKY to beat them in the second game tonight. And that was with Verlander on the mound. Sorry but if you think anything I said was inaccurate...well, again, welcome to reality. I stand behind every word I said. Oh yeah and I've been a life long Tigers fan. And I will continue to be. I'm just not a homer like you. Cause if you actually think this team will do anything if we do make it, well, then you're clearly a homer. Have fun with that. I'm as big a Tigers homer as you'll ever see and I don't give a s*** if you think so. Guess what: Fans are homers. So what? I'm not a broadcaster, I'm not an umpire, I'm not an analyst. I'm a Tigers fan. You, clearly, are not. You know what Tiger fans don't say? "f*** the Tigers." You disgust me.

I don't think I could ever say "f*** the tigers". I have called them pathetic in my days. My grandpa would call them "bums". But what did he do when I was over to watch a tigers game with him...tell me turn on the tv to watch "those bums". 2006 was the only year that I can recall when he called them something else. He called them his team. He is gone now but I know he would be proud of this team and I have a strange feeling that he would be prouder of this team than the 2006 team. GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted October 1, 2009 Disappointing loss today. Huge opportunity to clinch the division before the weekend. Great crowd at Comerica and I thought for sure today was going to be a big win. It is almost pretty certain the Tigers will still win the division but it would have been nice to get it out of the way without having to throw JV again. We need him rested to start game one against the Yankees or it might be a real quick series. Guess the celebration will have to wait at least another day. GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted October 1, 2009 game not quite over yet. Looks like Leyland is getting tossed. Nice! True, but I don't see the Tigers scoring five on Joe Nathan. I am glad Bonderman plunked Young. Minnesota had been doing it the entire game. Santiago didn't leave early either -- that was a joke of a call.
Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted October 1, 2009 Ok I'll admit, in hockey there are usually a few cinderella stories. Funny though that both of those NHL teams you mentioned still couldn't actually win it all. But MLB rarely works like that. It's hard enough in baseball to even make the playoffs (only 4 teams from each league). So if you're good enough to make the post season in baseball then you've either won your division, or you've won the wildcard spot. That means its extremely rare for a cinderella story in baseball. And when there is, they don't go on to win any title. But this is one of those rare years that features the horrid central division. Tigers/Twins will definitely be major underdogs in the first round. Twins JUST went over the .500 mark a few days ago. And the Tigers about to lose their lead to that very team. All other playoff bound AL teams aren't just a little better than us. They are a lot better. And as for the '06 Tigers comparison, we were much better in all areas that year. And most importantly, we had consistent and timely hitting. Also the lowest ERA in the AL didn't hurt much either. We are definitely not as good as we were that year. And that team couldn't even win it all. If we make the playoffs I will be very surprised. If we make it out of the first round I'll be floored. Our bullpen is mediocre at best, and our bats are a joke (except for Cabrera). We're just lucky to have been in the worst division in baseball (which just a few years ago used to be one of the best). Otherwise we wouldn't have a prayer for a playoff birth. Although I still don't think we have a prayer. The Cardinals team that beat us to win the World Series a couple years back could easily be considered a Cinderella story. They had only won 83 games that series (already less than what we have this year), and the Tigers were heavily favored to win it all after getting to the finals. They destroyed us. timothy1997 0 Report post Posted October 4, 2009 I am done with this team. They do not want to win this divison. For some reason (and i am comparing this team to the 2006 team), Jim Leyland's tigers collaspe down the stretch. Tigers have to use Verlander tomorrow and hope the twins lose because I don't see Porcello winning a game on tuesday at the metrodome.

I would think he'll be gone if they blow this - and it is looking more probable. Nothing personal against the guy but someone will have to take the fall if they choke themselves right out of the POs. Here's one thing that blows my mind about baseball: when the season is on the line - and it couldn't be so more than the last few games, the Tigs will still stick with their freaking "rotation" and pitch some guy down the depth charts I never heard of. MLB teams would rather risk making the POs just to keep their freaking rotation. The only reason Verlander is playing tomorrow is because he is SCHEDULED. Have some freaking creativity sometimes and try to win a damn game that counts. What is it about Detroit teams that have us choking in the 7th hour?

All other playoff bound AL teams aren't just a little better than us. They are a lot better. This is why baseball is a total joke. I enjoy the sport - my dad was a player, my son just started playing this year. MLB is out of control. The reason the Yanks and Sox almost always make the POs is they outspend all other teams. Yeah I know this year the Tigs have some contracts pushing their payroll too high, but really this is the only sport left with NO salary system. And MLB is happy to have the Yanks/Sox in the POs/World Series most of the time. In no way can I blame the Tigers failure to clinch down the stretch on this fact, but if you think about the AL, 1 or 2 spots will always go to the "big spenders" leaving only a few spots for all the other teams. The NL is more evenly balanced, sans maybe the Dodgers, but why MLB doesn't address their abysmal no cap system is a bigger joke than any of the steroid/drug issues. Still time to pull the division out of their butts tomorrow, or the day after, but you are right we are realistically looking NY/Sox coming out of the AL anyways = barf - go Angels..... Still time to pull the division out of their butts tomorrow, or the day after, but you are right we are realistically looking NY/Sox coming out of the AL anyways = barf - go Angels..... Just look at the basic things in MLB. First not all ballparks are the same size. Cool in a way but still hard to find balance. Imagine if the Joe had a much bigger ice surface than any other rink. They would be crying their eyes out a ton. Also half the league uses the DH and rest doesn't. Thats like saying that the Western Conference of the NHL is gonna have 6 skaters instead of 5 in the East. Good luck East. I say MLB needs to establish more of a playoff system like the NFL. Give some teams a free pass for working hard during the season and let 2 divison winners auto advance to the conference series. Then you can have 1 divison winner and 3 wild card teams fight for advancement. Also bring back daytime playoff baseball. So cool growing up how they would have games at 1pm, 4pm and then 7pm. tripleheaders of playoff baseball!!

GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted October 5, 2009 I guess this is a perfect conclusion to the season. Our MVP gives the Tigers one more gem when they needed it the most. I couldn't help but think about the missed opportunities today though. Losing 5 of 6 to the Royals down the stretch was a huge difference. Starting Alfredo Figaro and Nate Robertson in two games with chances to clinch the division is pretty tough. Just imagine if the Tigers had gotten anything this season from Washburn, Galarraga, Robertson, Bonderman or Willis. The Tigers have no one to blame but themselves. Tuesday is by no means an ideal situation to settle the division. The Twins have all the momentum and the Tigers are never good in the damn Metrodome. I am completely expecting a loss but I have to give the Tigers credit in the sense that they haven't quit all season despite their many flaws. Props to Justin Verlander for a remarkable season. JV is the frickin man.

Have no idea what happened to the Washburn expt, etc. Also, what decided home field for the play-in? I read somewhere it is just a coin toss, but that seems too unrealistic for a sport like baseball where there are 100 stats that could be used to make the call (record vs each other, division record, home record, etc). Either way - Go Tigers - they are going to be in need of some good karma Tues night!!!!
rwfan007 18 Report post Posted October 5, 2009 (edited) It would have been Porcello's spot in the rotation, but he pitched in the day-night double header on Tuesday, along with JV, and that would have only given him 4 days rest instead of the usual 5, and Leyland did not want to risk his rookie arm. Washburn and Willis are hurt, and Galarraga and Bonderman were not stretched out for a start due to their recent stay in the bullpen, and Robertson pitched the day before. The playoff location used to be decided by coin-flip, but they changed the rule in the offseason to make the season series-winning team the host for potential tie-breaking games. Third Man In 2,091 Report post Posted October 5, 2009 What's also interesting is that Tuesday would be Jackson's normal day in the rotation. Porcello has pitched better than Jackson down the stretch, but that's a lot of pressure to put on a kid. I guess they're counting on the fearlessness of youth. Show 'em what you're made of, kid! Bondo still hurt and unproductive methinks. Have no idea what happened to the Washburn expt, etc. Galarraga might be the only one who deserves a shot over Fiagro. Porcello was scheduled to pitch that day but the rainout on monday screwed it up and forced porcello to pitch on tuesday instead. Washburn and Willis are both battling injuries (head probs). Bondo they are trying him for the bullpen. Tuesday is at 5pm EST tiger fans so get outta work early to catch the game. Also Quick turnaround for whomever the winner is. Game 1 of the ALDS against the Yankees is 6pm on Wednesday. Sounds to me like Jackson will pitch game 1 if we win on tuesday
