egroen 384 Report post Posted February 19, 2009 (edited) You'll have to add Chara, since he has already been annointed as the Norris winner since the first month of the season because Lidstrom has obviously "lost it". I was going to say the same thing roughly... it will be interesting in seeing where everyone ends up at the end of the season. It could end up being similar as in the NBA when they were just tired of giving Jordan the MVP every year even though he clearly was still the best player. Most probably Lids won't be clearly better but it looks like he should still be in the running.

It's not over yet. Lids is just getting revved up. I wish i played as well as Lidstrom on his off year. He may still get the Norris. Always beleive.
Datsyerberger 279 Report post Posted February 19, 2009 Out of all those players, Lidstrom has by far the fewest giveaways and most PK time. In fact, when you do an analysis of giveaways to points ratio, Lidstrom blows every other Norris 'frontrunner' out of the water, including Chara. After looking the other day, I think I found out that the second closest to him in that regard among the top/near top tier is Weber. I think the main reason for Lidstrom's slight points decline this year is that he's leaving more of the offensive role to Rafalski, since that's Raffi's playground, and being a touch more conservative (and logging less PP time). Most probably Lids won't be clearly better but it looks like he should still be in the running. yeah, it seems like from the perspective of the people giving out the award, if lidstrom isn't CLEARLY the ONLY person who could even be CONSIDERED for the trophy, at this point they're going to give it to someone else. if he's in with the pack, so to speak, and gets the trophy anyway, people might think a) he's getting it just on reputation rather than how well he played this year or b) he's getting because he playes on the yankees of hockey. the people that choose these things probably don't want to be accused of either of these things, and so will pick someone other than lids unless it's absolutely undeniable that he must win it again this year. i don't get to watch enough hockey to know how well other d-men are playing, and of course numbers don't tell the whole story. i've heard that green's +/- rating is inflated just because he plays with ovechkin, though it should be noted, i suppose, that lids plays with our best players as well. anyhow, i've noticed nick's defensive play getting a lot better lately after a brutal first half, and he's also gotten really hot points-wise as well. if he keeps up this pace he might force himself to be considered once again. arnoldbuck 0 Report post Posted February 19, 2009 It will be interesting to see how this award is handled this year. Especially if Lids dominates down the stretch. The only thing I can think of is that the NHL is looking to pass the trophy reign on to someone else. Despite Nicks superior talent and defensive ability, I would not be shocked at allto see either Chara or Green win it this season. That being said, I'm still firmly in Nicks corner. C-TownWing 0 Report post Posted February 19, 2009 With the (offensive) tear Green's been on, I'm surprised to see that many Ds that close to him in points, even if they do have a few more GP. My gut feeling is that Lids, Chara and Green will be the finalists. We'll see where it goes from there.
TheSupafly 50 Report post Posted February 19, 2009 You guys are so lucky to have Lidstrom on your team. There's no one like him. They should rename the award after him when he retires. I'll be rooting for Boyle, but if I had a vote it would go to your guy. People that vote for Chara simply aren't watching the games. Chara is very good, but not on Lidstrom's level. I love hearing that sentiment. Lidstrom to me is easily the least replaceable Red Wing. The Wings would be fine playing with any other 1 Wing injured. If Lids is injured... they have no chance at going far in the playoffs.

cusimano_brothers 1,655 Report post Posted February 20, 2009 From NHL dot com: The James Norris Memorial Trophy is awarded annually to the National Hockey League's top "defense player who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-round ability in the position". Is Green the "Sundin of the Defense"? Put in a full season, then I'll seriously look at his application. To be fair to Greene he isn't AWFUL defensively, he is decent enough and the norris is a combination of offense and defense. I wouldn't be against him winning the norris IF he pulls considerabely ahead of all the other defensemen. By my definition I'd say he needs to get 15-20 points ahead of the other D to get any votes this season in my opinion. With that said I think it should go to Chara or Lidstrom depending on who finishes the season better. Edited February 20, 2009 by Carman

You can make a better case for are an injured Lidstrom with 55 games and Rafalski with 58 games out of the Club's 58 games played than Green's 45 games of Washington's 58 games played. I know that Green missed 13 games, due to his right shoulder injury after the hit by Pronger this past November; but I think that games played should carry more weight than total points.
