uk_redwing 495 Report post Posted March 9, 2009 Link Right wing Aaron Downey was reassigned to Grand Rapids on Sunday, as Tomas Holmstrom is ready to come off long-term injured reserve and return to the lineup Tuesday against Phoenix. Holland said the club will reassess defenseman Andreas Lilja's condition today, before deciding whether to send Ericsson down. Lilja continues to experience headaches from the concussion he sustained Feb. 28. The only way Ericsson can stick around is if Lilja is placed on long-term injured reserve. Holland said Marian Hossa (sore neck, back) should return to the lineup sometime this week.
GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted March 9, 2009 So much for being voted player of the game several times. Now we have no Lilja or Downey or McCarty in the lineup. This might be the softest lineup the Wings have ever had in their team's history.
Wombat 26 Report post Posted March 9, 2009 It is too bad but this team still has cap issues and he's one of the guys that can be sent down without being waived. It had to be done.

Yzersyukstromberg 0 Report post Posted March 9, 2009 He had a good couple of games, but if it's a salary cap issue, then there's not much you can do about it. I'd rather have Holmstrom in the lineup over Downey any day.

He's been on the team all year long. In fact, Meech can't even be sent down to the minors without clearing waivers, so that's not an option.

No really, I think it's great that we're so protective of our important impact players like Meech & Kopecky
Wombat 26 Report post Posted March 9, 2009 Everyone seems to be forgetting that Hossa is out, Meech is still in the lineup. Downey isn't the only current callup. Hossa is not on LTIR so his cap number isn't replaceable by a call-up from the minors. Homer was on LTIR but once he is taken off the Wings must be under the cap. The only other call-up right now is Erickson.
Datsyerberger 279 Report post Posted March 9, 2009 Lucky us. No really, I think it's great that we're so protective of our important impact players like Meech & Kopecky If we waive those players, they WILL be claimed. Our "impact" players like Kopecky and Meech would probably have secure 3rd line/3rd d pairing spots on half the teams in the league. Downey or D-mac, on the other hand... HanKarin40 7 Report post Posted March 9, 2009 That's too bad for Downey. He seems like a great team guy with a positive attitude, but at the same time isn't a spectacular hockey player. Then again, who has been lately? At least on Saturdays. Anyway, great to see Homer and Hossa back soon!

Frozen-Man 144 Report post Posted March 9, 2009 Your points? That's pretty much what everyone said about Quincy and then he plays great in LA and people Monday morning quarterback and get pissed that we let the guy go for nothing.
xBrave_Heartx 0 Report post Posted March 9, 2009 As much as i love my boy Downs.. He's not an everyday enforcer.. He's a legit enforcer in the fighting sense.. Just not in the player sense. Good to see him up though, I want more Abdelkader.

Good to see him up though, I want more Abdelkader. I disagree 1000000000%, I think he can definitely handle (and deserves) a 4th line role. He's been even (+/-) in 60ish games with the Wings and has a goal and assist so far this year in 4 games. He plays such a simple game and although he may look awkward doing it he does all the fundamentals and gets the job done.

That is the funny thing about Downey, as much as some poeple consider him a liability, he's never actually done anything in 60 games over 2 seasons to justify this feeling about him. I can't remember one instance where a stupid play by Downey cost this team even a single goal.
