If they are done for the game it will be tough to double shift for the other players

Why is Franzen such a *****?! Someone tell him that he's big and he's allowed to fight people.

You have lots to learn about hockey.

How is he a *****? He took one in the head when he wasn't looking. I'd like to see you withstand them. I give credit to him. One of the few times this year where hes stood up to not one, but two guys.

With that said, its pretty clear that everyone knows the Wings are soft. And our "enforcer" of a PP looked more like Marek Malik instead of Probie.

Man. Lately, the Wings are, at many times, playing like kids. During these periods, they make all the wrong decisions. They bobble the puck constantly. They can't handle even the most elementary of plays. These periods are broken up by some times in which they actually play like pros. They dominate the game at these times, and they score. Unfortunately, the bad periods are happening a lot and the good periods aren't. I don't get why that is.

This game has been one protracted failure so far, aside from 30 seconds or so. For vast majority of this game, the Wings have been playing the same sort of disjointed, off-the-mark hockey we've seen from them for much of the last few games and in parts of almost every single game this season. Even in games in which they play well most of the time, lapses into these periods of lackadaisical hockey happen a few times and that---plus the goaltending, very confusingly bad in the same manner---is what gets most of these goals scored on the team.

Against San Jose in that 6-0 win, in the Winter Classic, and maybe in a couple of other games, the Wings have played professional-level hockey the entire game. In the rest, they've played little-league hockey for periods ranging from some to most of the game, and, just as with the bad goaltending---in which Conklin and Osgood just seem to be "off" at times in a bizarre way for no apparent reason---I can't figure out why on earth it's happening. It's BIZARRE.

Calgary slashing - 2 min 8:41, D. Moss

Calgary boarding - 5 min 10:52, D. Phaneuf

Calgary puck over glass - 2 min 11:59, J. Leopol

Calgary cross check - 2 min 13:18, C. Sarich

Calgary roughing - 2 min 14:10, A. Aucoin

Calgary roughing - 2 min 14:10, J. Vandermeer

Calgary roughing - 2 min 14:10, J. Vandermeer

Calgary misconduct - 10 min 14:10, J. Vandermeer

The Wings managed 19 shots (of their total 26 in the first period) on the PP. How long did we have a 5 on 3? Good god, if the PP is our enforcer then we sure as hell should look for an upgrade.

Agreed, two potential injuries for one goal in a regular season game???

Anybody complaining about the effectiveness of our powerplay should go back and watch that tape. Kiprusoff was no less than amazing for that stretch. Unbelievable. A lesser goaltender would have given up three, never mind the two consecutive post shots.

Yup, he was amazing. A trait that usually accompanies successful playoff teams. Good thing we have goalkeepers who can bear down and stand on their head when need be like Kipper did.

As for Cleary and Franzen being out -- Well, who didn't see this coming. I guaranteed within 3 games of dressing the hands down softest (forget fighting, we are talking any sort of grit period) team in the history of the NHL that we would have guys dropping.

Coinsidence? No, some will claim it is - but in all reality, if you didn't see it coming then you are blind.

The Wings took a ton of abuse in that period and only have a 1 goal lead to show for it. They'll be killing a few penalties now after all the PPs they got.

Fights can be a pressure release valve in a situation like that. Fight Phaneuf for the hit on Cleary and there's a good chance things settle down. Instead, it escalates into the players all still being pissed off and there's lots of lumber being laid, cheap shots and a sucker punch.
