Update from Joe Louis Arena today: Tomas Holmstrom will miss tonight's game against the Flyers because of a strained knee.

Holmstrom suffered the injury late Sunday at Columbus when he got caught in a rut in the ice, he said.

This is an especially bad break for Holmstrom, as he's only been back four games since sitting out 18 recovering from a sports hernia.

"I just twisted it bad," Holmstrom said. "I'm day-to-day."

Mike Babcock said the Wings would dress all their defensemen to plug the holes. Derek Meech is filling in for Valtteri Filppula (back spasms). Brett Lebda was at center during the morning skate, but that may not carry over into the game.

Hurraaay, lebda playing center and meech.... :P

Ugh, it's situations like this that make the Wings cap situation so bad. It'd probably be best to send Ericsson down for a game to bring up Helm/Leino/Downey so that they don't have to play 2 defensemen as forwards, but it might be too late.

I may be alone in this, but I'd be interested to see what Lebda can do as a forward. He's very fast, and he likes to handle puck and jump in the rush, so why not give it a try? He can't be any worse as a forward than he is as a d-man, so the idea has my vote.

I agree with this, he has crazy wheels, why couldn't he be a decent forward?

so we're looking at, hypothetically:

Franzen-Datsyuk-Cleary

Hossa-Zetterberg-Hudler

Sammy-Meech-Draper

Kopecky-Lebda-Maltby

?

or do you go

Sammy-Meech-Kopecky

Draper-Lebda-Maltby

so you can roll at least three somewhat descent lines (at this point i'd rather have kopy in over malts and even draper) and give the fourth line very sparing minutes?

needless to say, we're going to need the top two to log a LOT of minutes tonight.

i should check the GDT to see projected lines...maybe they've got something else cooking.

He's probably more effective as a defenseman but why not try Ericsson at forward? He used to be one anyways. Better than Lebda at forward.

with meech and lebda playing forward, we need all the help we can get out back!! ericsson especially needs to focus on clearing the crease tonight.

It's stuff like this that makes the Hossa signing for next season illogical.

Its things like this that makes me wish that some players would retire, cause they are getting old, and injury prone and other players who can play 75+ games a year can play.

baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah is there actually no way we can call up Downey for tonight's game? is it too late yet? not too thrilled to see Meech/Lebda centering the 3rd/4th lines... lol

At least Lebda won't be a defensive liability

Anyways, I really like what Ericcson's been bringing to the table. Anyone see him totally rub Nash out of the play vs. the Preds, while Nash was trying to drive to the net? The kid did it like it was nothing.

If this were a playoff game they could stick Leino in there and the big red machine would keep on chugging. It isn't, and management obviously wants to take as long a look at Ericsson as they can before Lilja comes back and they have to send him down, so we get the Laughalympics Squad Featuring Brett Lebda at Forward.

I agree, there needs to be more salary cap flexibility built into the Wings' payroll for next year.
