Kronthewall55 14 Report post Posted April 10, 2009 i saw this on espn and my jaw droped to the floor, that is shoot out goal of the year hands down. I like goaltenders reaction, just utter disbelief of what happened.

Cern 0 Report post Posted April 10, 2009 LMAO, Budaj is just like "Uh, where did the puck g- oh. Aww..."
pavyaz19 1 Report post Posted April 10, 2009 (edited) i guess i'm in the minority here... that was not exciting to me at all. there's so much luck involved there it's ridiculous. the obvious example is that his shot hit the goalie first, then flipped up and over... which is why the goalie is dumbfounded. He lost sight of it since it had already hit him, not because he was mesmerized by the move. To go even further, when the puck comes down, it bounces in the crease next to Budaj's leg, but somehow bounces backwards into the net. Lame. that puck could have bounced in any other direction and then all of us would say... well that was dumb, but nice try, i guess. to me, Ribeiro should save it for the all-star competition if he ever gets to that point... in regular season hockey, i realize the stars are done-for, but i'd like to see skill... not shenanigans. Give me Datsyuk frying Turco any day... now that goal was something to get excited about. Hardly any luck involved at all, just an extremely humiliated goaltender... and no show-boating included. edit: details Edited April 10, 2009 by pavyaz19

Both teams are well out of playoff contention, what does he have to lose? If Dallas was fighting for the 8th seed I'd see what you're getting at - but if Dallas was fighting for the 8th seed Ribero probably wouldn't have risked the move in the first place. Like you said, if they were competing for a playoff spot, he wouldn't have done it... therefore it's a gimmick... he's fooling around. I'm not going to go ga-ga over a trick shot that means nothing. "the best shootout goal in NHL history"??? please.

Even though I completely hate the guy with a fiery passion deep within my soul I have to admit you have to have some skillz to pull something like that off. dat's sick 1,002 Report post Posted April 10, 2009 Actually that wasn't very impressive to me either. Maybe it's just that we've seen a number of great shootout goals lately, the bar has kinda been raised. Had the shot gone straight in it would have been awesome.. now it was just a nice move that was very close to making him look kinda dumb. But Ribeiro has some skill, he's done a couple of nice moves in SO's.
Guest mindfly Report post Posted April 10, 2009 So which is the best... this one, omarks? or lindbergs? I still think Omarks is a little bit better but maybe thats just me
AtomicPunk 296 Report post Posted April 10, 2009 I think as a society, recently, there has been a trend to make the new thing "the best ever". Nice move but as others said, its not like he roofed it and beat Budaj clean. It went off his pad, up, then down behind him. He was probably shooting 5 hole and got the lucky bounce. stevkrause 1,247 Report post Posted April 10, 2009 A. That was indeed amazing... B. That would never happen in a game that matters, both teams are out of playoff contention and I think he was just having fun, because honestly... it didn't matter if either team won or lost
egroen 384 Report post Posted April 10, 2009 Not that impressed either, considering Budaj made the save but a lucky bounce had it go into the net anyways.
Guest Four Report post Posted April 10, 2009 Not that impressed either, considering Budaj made the save but a lucky bounce had it go into the net anyways. Agreed. If he flicked it over Budaj and in then it would be better..
stormboy 47 Report post Posted April 10, 2009 Both teams are well out of playoff contention, what does he have to lose? If Dallas was fighting for the 8th seed I'd see what you're getting at - but if Dallas was fighting for the 8th seed Ribero probably wouldn't have risked the move in the first place. it has nothing to do with the standings. if they were in playoff contention, he probably would not have tried that move, yes. but he did, and the fact that it went it in the net was a complete fluke. that has nothing to do with anything other than luck. yeah, he skated backwards and i guess made a nice stick move, but a goalie with nothing on the line made the save and it took two really luck bounces (off the goalie, off the ice) to make it in. not a BAD move, per se, especially considering the relevance of the game, but the fact that it scored was pure luck. i'm not saying that a good deal of hockey isn't luck, but for this to be anywhere near any top ten of shootout/penalty shot rankings is silly. he didn't own the goalie. the goalie made the stop and got unlucky. if somehow you can convince me that mike meant the shot to glance of the goalie, take an odd knuckle-puck bounce off the ice and end up in the net...if he PLANNED the whole thing out, then i'll be astounded. but that didn't happen. stormboy 47 Report post Posted April 10, 2009 Made #2 on SportsCenter Top 10. that middle-school kid's basketball shot made number one. now, while it's amazing that that ball ended up going in (one in a million chances) the fact remains that it's amazing because it's such an odd fluke. off the top of the backboard, off some random banner-like-think, in the hoop. the kid didn't plan it. it's impressive because it's so random and fluky. same exact thing goes for ribeiro's goal.
