Message Sending

I love it. The guys are showing their emotions every second of every period, beautiful.

I bet the Wings will win by showing the class and skating away etc. Nothing wrong with it, but nothing wrong with the message sending either. Just gives us a more entertaining hockey product to watch when the Wings arent on :D

Take a look at a regular season game and a playoff game in every other major sport and you'll notice almost no difference, yet in hockey the playoff atmosphere is immediately evident. This message sending you reference is just one of the many factors that rule into this truth and I think its a wonderful thing, as well as part of what makes the Stanley Cup Playoffs the greatest post season in all of sports.

Somebody better keep an eye on him. We don't want him going to talk to the refs between periods. Let's show him which team really is the model team in the NHL.

Im quite sure they will show that little weasel on cam like 10 times with that smug troll look on his face !!

i heard they are aiming for a hitless and penalty free game, and if they achieve their goal then all fans in attendance will receive a free barbie doll

Gah! Seriously, people, what does Bettman have to do with the OP's intent? Please, for the love of Crosby, stay on target. This is getting as bad as hearing people still saying "wazzup" in 2007.

As for the message sending, I honestly don't have a huge problem with it. I noticed that the Blues have been especially liberal with their use of scrums after the whistle, but teams lacking the talent to win on skill need to dig for every advantage they can find, no? This is, after all, playoff hockey. The intensity and violence associated are amped up several degrees, when done correctly. How many people here loved the reply Datsyuk sent to Vermette in response to his message? I know I did.

Of course it's scary, as someone could get hurt. But if the playoffs aren't scary, are they really worth watching? I'd really rather watch the refs swallow their whistles this time of year than see them determine winners and losers in a prolonged battle of mettle, skill and will.

Lettem scrum, I say.

EDIT: typo

I think it can be entertaining, I love seeing the emotion and intensity of the playoffs and the "message sending" is part of that.

However, when there's scrums after each and every whistle during the last 5 minutes of a game, it's a bit over-the-top. If St.Louis for example would focus a bit more on trying to actually play hockey, they might have been more succesful, their games have all been pretty close in terms of scoring.

maybe wings fans at the game can chuck their octopi at Buttman's face instead of on the ice!

Yes, I was just talking about this last night. Didn't the NHL send a letter out to all the teams that were in the playoffs saying they weren't going to tolerate any of this kind of stuff? If so, looks like the letter hasn't got to the teams. On the other note, I really like this more. The playoffs are more fun to watch.

I think the scrums after the whistles are stupid and out of hand. I propose this solution:

1) Linesmen are to stay out of scrums. Do not get between players. These are professional atheletes, they can handle themselves. If they want to "send a message", let them, don't break it up so that the same damn thing happens after the next whistle.

2) Start calling either Roughing or Delay of Game penalties for every intentional contact that is made after the whistle. Penalise every single instance of face-washing or gloved-punching after the whistle.

This should accomplish two things, speed up the game, which fans like, and increase the number of fights, which fans like. As it is today, we have cowardly players who would rather die than drop their gloves throwing punches at other player's heads in scrums and getting away with it. That's garbage. If you refuse to fight, keep your hands at your sides and skate away like the wimp you are. If you want to stand up for yourself or send a message, then DO IT! None of this boring half-asses crap that just slows down the game.

"Sending a message" to me is contrived, it's like watching the WWE. Playing with emotion and having the balls to push back and say I'm not putting up with that $hit is more than ok in my books. I was at the Saddledome last night. Burrish trying to break his stick in Bourque's face last night (stick broke, but he only caught his shoulder, not his head) has no place in the game. The reactions of both teams after is ok in my books. Hearing McGuire yelling that the Flames needed to get Iginla off the ice at the end of the game and that he had never heard that type of verbal abuse thrown at a star player before sets up great expectations for the next game. Builds excitement. (You're asking, if you were at the Saddledome, how do you know what McGuire said on TV? Watched game live, went home, watched replay on TSN2, went to bed at 1:30am...very tired today <_< )

Avery's poke at Varlamov (sp?) needs to be eliminated. But after it happened, if someone on the Caps had had the balls to beat Avery into a puddle, that would have been ok in my books. Emotion is what makes playoff hockey. The rest is bull.

If the league truly wants to eliminate this end of game "message sending", I have the perfect solution. Instead of suspending the meathead the coach put on the ice, allow the opposition to pick the player that serves the suspension. Instead of Avery, the Caps could chose to suspend Lundqvist. Instead of Burrish being suspended, the Flames could chose to suspend Toews. No more message sending.

Out of hand? Seriously? What's happened? Who has been injured as a result?

I really enjoy the rough stuff. Message sending gone too far is Bertuzzi on Moore. Harden up. This is hockey.
