jpd88 0 Report post Posted April 29, 2009 So I was reading that MLive is saying that only up to 4 of the Wings games will be on national television? I do not understand what is up with this. Not only are the Red Wings the defending stanley cup champions, but they are also the most popular hockey team in the United States. On top of that, it is not even the first round anymore, meaning that the NHL should be able to schedule the Red Wings into all seven of the national television slots. Is this rumor true, or am i just blowing off steam for nothing?

I don't know if we really are only getting 4 of 7 games on national TV, but if we are no one should be surprised......The Red Wings are not the most popular hockey team in the United States from a marketing standpoint, we don't have Ovie or Crosby, and we are full of "boring" players, we have the most successful team in the league but we don't have any flashy players that will draw outside viewers, Lidstrom, Osgood, Z,Pav, etc. are not flashy personalities (part of the reason they are so successfull), no one should be surprised by this
GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted April 29, 2009 (edited) I hate Bettman and his Penguins. If we only get up to 4 games in this series despite it being the 2nd round, it'll be even more embarassing than what happened the last round. Detroit/Anaheim will be the most exciting series so far in the playoffs. This is a huge mistake by the league if they decide to minimize Wings coverage. Anyone know why the NHL network shows many games in the regular season but not the playoffs? Edited April 29, 2009 by GMRwings1983

The second round should also feature at least one or two FSD games. No sense in getting knee-jerk yet. Although, for some here that's just second nature. Cern 0 Report post Posted April 29, 2009 This makes me all the more thankful I'm in Canada - our TV back home even has TSN2. That's amazing that they wouldn't show all the playoff games, there'd be riots up here if that happened.
GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted April 29, 2009 (edited) If Pittsburgh plays Washington, you can forget about seeing any other games that are on that night. Well, it looks like that's exactly what will happen. Pray that the Wings are scheduled on the other nights. Edited April 29, 2009 by GMRwings1983

Not televising the last 2 Stanley Cup champs playing each other is laughable. I hope the game is being streamed online somewhere like the last two Columbus games were. F*** you Bettman. Agree...there is absolutely zero doubt that the Wings are #1 in the US and #3 overall after Toronto and Montreal. It's just that they're trying to change that by constantly fluffing the Pens and Caps. I'm not going to worry about it too much until the schedule comes out. They could deliberately schedule us and them on different days. And keep in mind that we'll be on the west coast 2-3 games, so they'd be able to show both us and Caps-Pens on those days. The late starts don't bother me, since I'll be done with finals this week, and in the past that has been a problem in just about every playoff year.

That is why Buttman won't move the Wings bak in to the Eastern Conference. If the Wings left the west, who would go to all those games in Phoenix, Dallas, Los Angeles, etc... Heck, Nashville and Columbus may as well closeup shop if the Wings went East. Buttman aint no dummy (well, maybe) but he has business smarts. The Wings equal rating in the west. When he needs them. Move them East and the Western COnference may as well pack it in...
egroen 384 Report post Posted April 29, 2009 (edited) Bettman shamelessly uses the Wings, but then never promotes them. And I do not want to hear about "whining" because Osgood and Holland have "whined" about the same thing. It's not just the fans that notice. I honeslty do not understand Versus - the Red Wings have pulled in the highest ratings seen across the country in years, from last year's SCF (of course Crosby helped) and the last Winter Classic, which pulled in a lot more viewers than Crosby's Winter Classic. How do you ignore that, and why? Wash/Pitt is a great series, no doubt, but Det/Ana is pretty damn exciting one as well - certainly more exciting than Bos/Car. # The Red Wings have seen big ratings for their first round series. Game 3 between the Red Wings and Blue Jackets drew a 12.0 rating on FS Detroit, the highest rating for a Red Wings telecast on the net in five years. Through the first three games, the Red Wings/Blue Jackets series is averaging a 10.4 in Detroit. And more so than any other team, the Wings have viewers outside of their state. Consider how well they helped ratings in Ohio: FOX Sports Ohio also televised all Jackets Stanley Cup Playoff games, which averaged a 4.66 household rating (over 43,000 households or 97,000 at-home viewers). In addition, ratings for Game 1 of the club’s first round Stanley Cup Playoffs series vs. the Detroit Red Wings on April 16 was the most-watched Blue Jackets game on FOX Sports Ohio ever, as it registered a 5.73 rating (over 53,000 households and 119,000 at-home viewers). Regular season game vs. Detroit yielded higher ratings than the game vs. Pittsburgh: 4.53 vs 3.28. Detroit's ratings were down 16% this season and now they're almost triple their regular season average. I'm sure having a bad Pistons team this year has helped. Meanwhile, Puck The Media: After a weekend which saw the best opening round Stanley Cup Playoff ratings in awhile, the NHL came back down to earth this weekend. According to Sports Business Daily (Reg. required), the network's telecast of Game 6 - Penguins vs. Flyers drew an overnight rating of 1.2/3, down from both the 1.7 overnight for Game 3 of the series, but also merely even from the 1.2 overnight from last year's comparable telecast (4/19/08 - Flyers vs. Capitals). There was more bad news on Sunday. NBC's broadcast of Game 6 - Capitals vs. Rangers drew a 1.0/2 overnight rating, down big-time from last year's comparable telecast (4/20/08 - Red Wings vs. Predators) but the same overnight as last week's Game 2 telecast. The game tied with the ratings for the taped poker event that preceded it. Clearly the NHL's all-East, all-the time strategy backfired on them this week. Despite this, the East is will still get the Lion's share of games broadcast nationally. Edited April 29, 2009 by egroen
