WCSF GAME 1 GDT: Ducks 2 at Red Wings 3

I just got home from the game. I missed half the game, but it was well worth it.

A woman sat 2 seats over from HockeyMatters and myself. She was really quiet, had no towel they were giving away, and was crying. Her b/f broke up with her the night before. I said, come sit next to me. Well, ends up she works for the college I attend and I remember seeing her in the offices.

I gave her my playoff towel, talked to her about her situation, got her into the game, and by the end of the night she was smiling, laughing, and having fun. I felt really bad for her. I actually was suppose to meet a few other LGWer's at the Gordie Howe Statue, but I was still talking to her and consoling her.

I asked her if she loved him and she said "yes, very much." Then I said, then you know. Give it a few days and get a hold of him.

Aside from that, I missed the fight when I went to get drinks and missed a few goals. Ozzie has some good saves tonight and Franzen; what a move....

I can see this series going 7 games easy! I do agree Brown deserved 5 minutes. If suspended..1 game the most. I have seen worse of late. The refs did a decent job calling. The penalty on Wiz for hooking Hossa was extremely lame. Hossa never falls and he fell a little to easy for my liking. That was a dive! Other than that..great game by 2 high class teams

7 games easy? I doubt it. 6 at most but probably Wings in 5.

Just got back from the game. Here are my thoughts.

Passes seemed a little sloppy toward the beginning.

The crowd was so incredible. My voice was gone about halfway through the first period and it still is nowhere to be found.

To me the hit on Hudler seemed dirty. There was blood all over the ice. I don't see how anyone can justify a bleeding face because hits are not supposed to go to the head anyway.

Perry "got it"

Ozzie was great in the third.

Hiller looked good too.

Pronger is still an *******.

I sat behind a Leafs fan who was cheering for Anaheim and she was so rude and obnoxious.

I got surprised with tickets for Sunday for my birthday so I'm pumped.

I know that's probably not how you expected to spend the game, but that was extraodinarily kind of you.

I was worried myself about this game, rust, no Rafalski, still no Draper, Hiller being so hot, I really felt this could be a Ducks win. All afternoon I kinda had a strange feeling about it. Missing Rafalski probably hurt the Wings 5 on 5 some but they still scored 2 PP goals anyhoo, the rust doesn't matter if you get the win and I have no doubt they'll be better Sunday. Win game 2 and that wonderful math equation says they then have to beat you 4 out of 5.

It's simple, if the Wings get a couple more PP goals Sunday it forces Anaheim to play a completely different style they're not comfortable with which opens them up to odd man rushes.

Sunday is SO key

Good win. Not a perfect game but an exciting finish at least. Mule was a beast out there. It was awesome seeing Ericsson go after Perry like that.

The thing I liked was that we didn't give them a lot of clear cut chances. Most of their good chances were just floaters from the point that changed direction. Our defense is looking solid. Lebda had another nice game. It'll be nice to have Rafalski back though when he's ready.

Welp....

They didn't look great for the majority of the night. (I hope we can chalk that up to nothing more than a bit of rust.)

But....

They did what Championship caliber Teams do. They found a way to Win.

Oh.....and for those in the Press who are putting Pronger in Lidstrom's class?

Pfffft.

Nick doesn't have any classmates. He's peerless. Great night for the smooth Swede.

Good Win.

Man I hope you're right!

My gut says 7 games, though. This one could've went either way. I felt very, very relieved when Lidstrom scored.

Tonight was really stressful! (But damn fun too)

I agree 100%. When you have a chance to grab a team like the Ducks by the throat you better damn well do it. Being up 2-0 walking into the Ponda and being tied 1-1 is night and day.

Sunday is essentially a game 7 atmosphere for both teams.

Went to the game tonight, the Ericsson fight was AWESOME. Also, Ozzy's save just before the fight was really, really great. Probably not as good of a view on TV, but we were sitting behind the net and he made a really sharp adjustment on a good deflection, really nice save.

The Joe went wild when Lids scored at the end.... great game.

Let's get another one Sunday. Go Wings!

i reserved any judgment or any type of prediction in my mind on this series until game one was over.

i feel the rest of the series will be a real grinding style of play and pace. absolutely nothing easy. the key for the red wings to get this series is to keep traffic in front of hiller - make him uncomfortable. The Lidstrom GWG was a direct effect from the red wings swarming Hiller's kitchen. keep it up, this series will not go easy, and truly i can see this going 6 or 7 quite easily.

Agreed- this series will be won in the trenches.

Well, that game was more intense than all four Columbus games combined. Even in Game 4 when it was tied, I felt no pressure. That was a cakewalk, this is playoff hockey. Very intense game.

To echo others... The Wings weren't that good, especially early. They caught on in the third, though. I saw some of you guys complaining about them not driving the net and all that but I thought the Wings did a great job all night of going to the net and getting traffic. On both of Nick's goals Hiller had a guy in his grill making life difficult for him. There were lots of missed chances and a few goalposts on both sides so... it was much too close for my liking. :P

In closing, I would really love to just hug Nick right now.

Had to listen to the game at work, lovin the result once again.

Ozzie Stoning!

Ericsson Owning!

Lidstrom Pwning!

I think the best part of this win is that we got it without Rafalski and we can play better. We also out shot and oh ya out hit the SUPER PHYSICAL ducks. Awesome!

GO WINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's not ridiculous. It just means that you don't have carte blanche to run a goalie just because the puck's in the crease or a goal has been scored. Franzen was walking a line there on that play--usually that doesn't get called, but sometimes it does. Bayda's running over Thomas was more blatant and was a clear penalty, even though it was after the goal.

I think the big difference between the two plays (besides two different teams, two different games, and two different sets of stripes) is that Bayda wasn't the goal scorer. He wasn't taking the puck to the net on a scoring chance. He simply took a beeline at Thomas when Jokinen took the shoot. You get a bit more leeway if you have the possession of the puck.

I'm wondering if Nick's effort last night isn't enough to propel him to the Norris again. I know it's a regular-season award and Mike Green probably deserves it, but he's gone missing during the playoffs and I think last night will resound in voters minds when the time comes. He'll get some consideration based on name recognition alone, but I can't help thinking that last night's effort might have subconsciously earned him some votes.

I think the biggest thing about last night was that the Wings were able to win without Zetterberg, Datsyuk or Hossa really doing much of anything. If we can get those guys going at the same time while also getting Rafalski back in the line-up, the Wings will be in good shape.

Also, Jonathan Ericsson is going to be an elite NHL defenseman. He has been scary good and his fight with Perry last night cemented his status. Awesome stuff.

Unfortunately, they already voted for the Norris. I always thought it was dumb to vote before the playoffs, considering they're all that matters.
