Will Shanahan or Fedorov Retire in the Offseason?

Rate this topic

Anyone hear anything about their status for next season?

I'm guessing Shanny will be done after this year, but Fedorov may come back depending on how close the Capitals get this season to the Cup.

Anyway, they're two of my favorite players ever, but at this point it's hard to watch either of them play knowing that they are shells of what they once were.

Don't be so quick to count Shanny out. He played well with the Devils this year. I think he just needed a team to take a chance on him, and it paid off.

Shanny is like a 1 or 2 season guy. He plays amazing his first couple seasons with a new team then sorta seems to float the rest of his time till he gets traded. That's the way I see him, anyway. He can't keep that up forever.

I assume this brought a tear to your eye and a longing for a simpler time. :P

It did actually.

It was a great play, but moments like that are few and far between for him now. The explosiveness just isn't there anymore and it's sad for a fan to watch him float out there.

The same thing happened at the end of Yzerman's career, but he was more important to us in 2006 than Fedorov is now to the Capitals.

True. He's not nearly as fast. He's still got good timing, but.

I hope that they both play next season. It's the nostalgic sap coming out in me, but I don't want to see either of them go yet!

don't really see how you can think that...ever see him play before the rags??

I think Kenny mentioned in the 1st round that Feds was contemplating retirement. Hey if they both want to play next season there will probably be room on some team's roster for them.

Shanny a one or two season guy? He was a rock for this team for years.

How many teams has he been with since the Wings? If he was a true "rock", as you claim, he would still be here.

I have nothing against Shanny. He was one of the best aquisitions the Wings ever made. Fedorov is deep in our history and tradition and deserves his jersey retired. Period. He is the proto-type for what this team is today. He set the bar.

Stevie Y had to work to become what Fedorov already was. Truth hurts but there it is. I'd even go as far as to say that Steve wouldn't have become the captain that he was without Fedorov's influence. The early Scotty Bowman era is easy to forget.

Fedorov is a ******* HUGE chunk of this teams tradition. As much as it kills me to see him schooling Ovechkin, I'm glad to see him getting his due.

I say nowadays the second you show some sort of attitude problem that ends with your departure, you don't deserve your jersey up there. Fedorov may not get his jersey retired though he may go ot the HOF. The rafters at the Joe are exclusive ******* company, and honorees are obviously not selected on a whim.

I think Feds is as close as you can get to having your jersey up there, without getting it there. Just to me, too many little things to make me happy with his number going up. I know it's fun to see because in 80-odd years there have been six and to see one go up is like seeing a rare meteor go by once in a lifetime, but just give it a few years...

...because soon we're going to be stitching a banner for #5 the day he announces he's done, and in about 10-15 years, I have a feeling 13 and 40 will be up there too.

If you don't retire Fedorov jersey, forget 13 and 40

He played 13 years with the Red Wings, was extremely valuable in the 3 cups victories (maybe more than Yzerman if you don't consider the leadership aspect) and was kind enough to leave the organization when he went past his prime.

On the other way, I would not retire Shanahan. That's what i call ******* exclusive company.

With Colorado standards, Joe's rafters would be filled with basically all the 2002 team roster including Robitaille

Fedorov will get his number retired by the Wings and I hope he comes back for one season in the not so distant future.

I don't think hes done though, if the Caps make it to the finals(Big if) I doubt he retires. Hes finally found his place in Washington.. Ironically in the shadow of Ovechkin but it works.

Didn't he want more money? Either way I'm sure you sugar'd up his departure a little beyond reality.

So why forget Pav and Hank? Other than I'll guess nostalgia.
