Wings_Fan_In_Exile 3 Report post Posted May 5, 2009 I thought it was a pretty blatant cross check to the head of a prone player...... I actually was expecting a game suspension...
mjlegend 155 Report post Posted May 5, 2009 Knowing that that is now officially legal, I look forward to Johan Franzen doing that a few times in a row to Hiller tonight.
Mike 0 Report post Posted May 5, 2009 The NHL has no idea why they suspend players when they do. I really think it comes down to a coin flip. Kunitz clearly cross-checked Varlamov in the HEAD. So much for trying to eliminate hits to the head.

esteef 2,679 Report post Posted May 5, 2009 Of course he's not suspended, he's a Penguin who needs to help Crosby win. No surprise here. esteef

Yes, because pissing off an Anaheim team with two players that have more fighting majors than Detroit is a good idea. Plus, it just gives Perry justification for doing it back to Osgood. Except Perry has more experience doing it.
NGKEIB 32 Report post Posted May 5, 2009 I wish I could say that I'm irritated and surprised, and that I expected better from the NHL. All I can say is that I'm irritated.
kidish 0 Report post Posted May 5, 2009 I wish I could say that I'm irritated and surprised, and that I expected better from the NHL. All I can say is that I'm irritated. I think I agree with you there. I expected a suspension...but perhaps "hoped" was a better word. The league shouldn't let guys in the crease get mauled like that. Statts 4 Report post Posted May 5, 2009 Worth a penalty, but not a suspension IMO.
cusimano_brothers 1,655 Report post Posted May 5, 2009 I just looked up the word "consistent" in the dictionary and there is no mention of the NHL. Maybe they'll use this play as part of a "training video" for referees...next season, of course.
NGKEIB 32 Report post Posted May 5, 2009 Worth a penalty, but not a suspension IMO. I think it's a fair point - but what gets me is that had Daniel Carcillo/Scotty Hartnell/anyone else done that to Fleury in the 1st round, they would have had the book thrown at them. Wings_Fan_In_Exile 3 Report post Posted May 5, 2009 I think the worst part is, if Varlamov flopped like most of the goalies in the league do (just look at Ozzie) it would have been a guaranteed penalty and possible suspension. Instead he played like a man, ignored getting cross checked in the neck and made the play.... and Kunitz got away scott free.
NGKEIB 32 Report post Posted May 5, 2009 I believe the Penguins scored just after this (although Varlamov was able to get over).
Holmstrom96 347 Report post Posted May 5, 2009 Knowing that that is now officially legal, I look forward to Johan Franzen doing that a few times in a row to Hiller tonight. LOL, no kidding. Homlstrom probably wouldn't be tall enough to do it. But dang... So it's OK to cross-check a goalie in the head\throat... So it's OK to do blantant late headshots... Wow. Bah... thats just speculation. You dont know that for sure.
tazzer82 0 Report post Posted May 5, 2009 Can't say it surprises me to see no suspension coming for that. Unfortunately, it's going to take a severe injury on the ice before anything gets done. I'm shocked that more players don't take matters into their own hands, even with the instigator penalty being in place. Sooner or later though, one of the players is going to do something in response to something like that, and someone is going to end up being hurt in the process. Maybe then the owners won't be so fond of Bettman.
Resetti 44 Report post Posted May 5, 2009 Someone should explain to Kunitz that when you're supposed to "get into the head of the young goalie," you don't do it literally. I generally don't like seeing suspensions in the postseason because of how they can tilt a series but the NHL has to define some kind of consistency in how they hand out punishment. akustyk 84 Report post Posted May 5, 2009 gotta agree with the bashing. this definitely was a suspension worthy crap by Kunitz.
