Heroes of Hockeytown 694 Report post Posted May 20, 2009 I'd be interested to see a breakdown of the Anaheim series. I'd like to see how many points the Getzlaf line had and who they got them against. Lids had a spectacular game 1 if I recall but other than that had just 3 assists in 6 games? I think he was overall a +1 for the series? Norrisnick compiled the numbers, the totals were: Getzlaf 10 points, -2; Lidstrom 7 points, +2. After his Game 1 heroics, Nick had four more assists in the series. The point total seems like a good tradeoff considering Getzlaf is a forward and Nick is a defensemen, and +/- is a universally overrated stat. I can think of three solid instances from the Ducks series where Nick could have made a better play and avoided a goal against -- his shot getting blocked in Game 4 that led to a Getzlaf rush and Perry goal; letting Perry get behind him in Game 6 for the GWG; and passing the puck to Ericsson in the third period of Game 7, when he saw (or should have seen) the broken stick lying on the ice that could have created an obstacle. With all that said, the Getzlaf line absolutely dominated in the playoffs. No player or line up from the Sharks or Wings had any answer other than to outscore him. Nick did as good as anyone could hope to contain him and it would be a total folly to dismiss the work he did against Anaheim.
Motown4013 350 Report post Posted May 20, 2009 A lot of guys are worthy I think, but to date, I would put the MVP in this order- 1. Ozzie 2. Mule 3. Lids 4. Zetty
Guest Four Report post Posted May 20, 2009 (edited) VERY tough to choose out of our clutch players right now. My possible candidates (obviously): Cleary - OT goal against Ducks, bringing us to CF and his 3 goals against Chicago and he helped set up the OT goal in game 2. If he continues, he could potentially be the MVP, but I doubt it will last sadly. Franzen - Easily the best offensive playoff player in the game right now, without him our team would not be producing half as much. He's controlled the game for us many times, and is tearing up the score sheet. He is not as god defensively though. Osgood - Playing stellar at 2 GAA and a good save % and making saves when we need them. Lidstrom - Lidstrom, need I say more? Awesome playoffs for him too. Anaheim series brought him down a little, but he's bouncing back up and out-skilling the other team's offense. Oh yeah, one more thing; what other Norris candidate is still in the playoffs? That's right. Edited May 20, 2009 by Four

Headmanthepuck! 0 Report post Posted May 20, 2009 Sheesh, it's no wonder Osgood gets no respect around the league. There better not be another "boo hoo nobody respects Oz" thread around here ever because as Wings fans, we're driving the ******* bus in that regard. Oz is way down the list of my favorite Wings players. Nothing against him I just am not a goalie guy. But I know one thing. He's been absolutely brilliant. Notables in no particular order Lidstrom-even though the Getzlaf line still generated, Nick had a good series Franzen-strong offensive presence entire playoffs Cleary-strong two-way play and elevated offense lately Zetterberg-strong two-way play I'd still pick Osgood right now. He's just been fantastic. 10-3 2.04GAA 9.24Save% aside from last season, these are pretty much the best post season numbers he's had. He's been stellar making huge saves. Making the easy saves. Just a couple of gaffs but the numbers and play have been rock solid.
Headmanthepuck! 0 Report post Posted May 20, 2009 Chris Osgood. I'll go with Osgood as the Wings MVP by a nose over Franzen, Z, and Cleary.
Electrophile 3,554 Report post Posted May 20, 2009 Chris Osgood, Chris Osgood, Chris Osgood. Did I mention Chris Osgood? He has saved our ass so many times this playoff season, I've lost count. I don't care what he did during the regular season, right now he's turned into Terry Sawchuk.
SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted May 20, 2009 In this order... Chris Osgood Johan Franzen Nicklas Lidstrom Henrik Zetterberg Dan Cleary Mikael Sameulsson
WingsFan2008 0 Report post Posted May 20, 2009 Franzen or Crosby.
reggin 0 Report post Posted May 20, 2009 If you're including Zetterberg's name in the top three than you might as well include Datsyuk too. Neither has been amazing. One is playing great defense and the other is the empty net king. If I had to pick now, I would pick Cleary or Stuart.
Outsider 42 Report post Posted May 21, 2009 Sheesh, it's no wonder Osgood gets no respect around the league. There better not be another "boo hoo nobody respects Oz" thread around here ever because as Wings fans, we're driving the ******* bus in that regard. Been saying exactly this for years. Oz has a strong case for MVP thus far. As do Franzenstein and Cleary.
mjlegend 155 Report post Posted May 21, 2009 No love for Aaron Downey? I'd take Oz and Franzen over Cleary. I liked the two game winners in a row, but I'd like to see Cleary play a little bit more consistently good on offense before I give him MVP nod. I'd put him down behind Lidstrom if we're going on "so far" status.
Zetterling 16 Report post Posted May 21, 2009 Lidstrom. He scored the game winner in the first game against Anaheim and he set up the game winner in game 7. We got through Anaheim without our #2 and #6 defensemen and no Kris Draper. Osgood was MVP last game.
GMRwings1983 8,803 Report post Posted May 21, 2009 Ozzie is my pick. However, he won't win the Conn Smythe. It'll go to either Crosby or Franzen.
SDavis35 140 Report post Posted May 21, 2009 I feel Cleary deserves it... he's been on top of +/- all postseason, been getting hot on the goal front lately, and has some decent point numbers. He's probably the hardest worker on the Wings (which is tough to say with the guys we have). And has been fairly consistent. For the Wings: 1 Cleary 2 Osgood 3 Franzen Really tough to choose
vOrophin 5 Report post Posted May 21, 2009 Osgood right now. He's been solid through the entire playoffs, and fantastic at times. Franzen, Cleary, Lidstrom, and Zetterberg would be behind him for me. All of them have been good for most if not all of the playoffs and have come up big during times we needed them. There is still a lot of hockey to be played though, it's not out of the question for even Datsyuk or Hossa to jump into the picture if they absolutely dominate from here out (hoping, hoping). Chris L 0 Report post Posted May 21, 2009 Osgood hands down. He's kept them in so many games, went toe-to-toe with the best the Ducks could throw at us. And he was, stand-on-your-head good in the first period of Game 2 of the WCF. And excellent in the following periods. Ozzie all the way.

Wings_Rule_1010 4 Report post Posted May 21, 2009 For me it goes: 1. Osgood- he has been 100x better so far that anyone could have ever expected 2.Lidstrom- this team would be lost without him. He is expected to produce, while shutting down the opposing teams best players night in and night out. 3. Franzen- he is cluth 4. Cleary- he is cluth

ComradeWasabi 109 Report post Posted May 21, 2009 IMO it's Lidstrom almost without argument. Franzen could put up some competition but if you ask me Lidstrom has simply done everything in this series. He helped decisively shut down Rick Nash (alongside Z) against Columbus, he's had some clutch goals (Anaheim game 1, for example) and he has just been almost perfect in the playoffs. I say almost because nobody is perfect but I can't think of a single error Lidstrom has made in any situation. Franzen's goal-scoring has been critical, but Nick Lidstrom has been our best player through two and a half series so far. In the games against Anaheim we couldn't get ourselves going, Nick was still there. He leads all defensemen in playoff points with 12, is tied for the lead in defense goals with 3, him and Brent Seabrook share the lead in defense assists with 9, leads all defensemen in +/- with +9... he has been absolutely critical for us all playoff. Franzen's a very close second with Osgood in third and Hank in fourth, but for right now, nobody has been as outstanding as Lidstrom at both ends of the ice. The difference between him being our MVP and Franzen being our MVP has been Nick's shutdown ability along with his offensive production. Franzen is generally reliable on D, but he's nothing close to a shutdown centre like Z.
