The Reasons That The Wings Are Losing

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

1- Thomas Holmstrom: He can't skate, most of the times the puck bounces off his stick and we get a turnover. To be honnest I would never think I'd say this but Sammy's playing much better then him.

2- Marian Hossa: I have no idea what's wrong with Hossa. Is this how much he really wants to win a cup. Does he want to be embarassed by his previous team and laughed by half the media?

3- Brian Rafalski: Turnover after turnover. Get your game straight.

4- Jonathan Ericsson: Now I'm not blaming him on the losses but it's been 2 games in a row his been taking bad penalties which Pens are capitilizing on it.

5- Leino: Take him out please, put Adkel and leave him there.

6- Ozzie: All tho his been great overall. In the last two games 4-8 goals we're savable, other 2 were lucky bounces.

I think we'd be better off with Holmstrom only playing in the PP. We need to keep it simple, play Red Wings Hockey. The 'Pens have been making us chase around like little boys ... that's what we we're supposed to do. They want to win, they want to be better then us and there more hungry.

We need new lines also it's just not working against the Pens.

Franzen Dastyuk Hossa ---> Best Offensive Line To Have + Very good in shutting down.

Helm Zetterberg Filppulla ---> Major Shut Down Line.

Cleary Adkel Hudler ---> Amazing Potential To Score

Maltby Draper Sammy / Holmstrom---> Energy Line.

Lids - Rafalski

Kronner - Stuart

Ericsson - Lebda

Ozzie

Ozzie

I respectfully disagree about Ozzie. Our D has left him hanging out to try...last night he was all that kept us from losing 8-2. He has played solid. Yeah, he may have been able to save some, but he is not an automatron, and he has play MORE than well enough for us to win.

Ozzie was hung out to dry last night ... looked like a regular season game for sure... Turn overs in our own zone and neutral zone are killin us .. The players with out the puck arent skating to open areas/lanes .. i saw about 15 attempts at giving and going but once the player received a pass he couldnt feed it back cuz no one was skating .. that was not a NHL caliber game last night . the wings had cement in their shoes ..

Datsyuk needs to shutdown geno cuz fil aint doin it.

I don't understand why everybody is down on hossa. Yes I know he has the big contract. But he had 6 shots on goal last night. He looks dangerous when he has the puck. I know he's not scoring and if he was nobody would be knocking him.

I didn't realize being tied in the series meant losing...Where's that big shiny red button when you need it?!?!

It's not like we ever lost 2 straight before in the playoffs and came back to win....ohhh that's right, last year in the first round when we won the cup.

edit: Wings will win game 5 and either game 6 or 7 for the win - had to throw that in there :D

Rafalski had probably the worst game, or at least the worst second period, of his career. He gave the puck away often, including one giveaway that led to a breakaway by Malkin, but fortunately Franzen bailed him out with incredible backchecking. What I really hated though was how he played Staal when he scored. I kept waiting for him to turn and skate to keep Staal to the outside, instead he kept backskating, and Staal walked right around him. It was obvious that Staal was coming with more speed than Rafalski could handle without turning. Rafalski's play frustrated me more than anything else.

I didn't see anything wrong with Hossa's play though. The guy generated some scoring chances and had around 6 shots on net. He's playing somewhat injured, and doesn't have Datsyuk feeding him the puck, but is still a threat. I'd like to see some of those shots go in, but don't see much else to complain about.

Hudler's been near invisible though. When he does get the puck, I kind of think to myself, "Oh yeah, that's right, Hudler plays for us." He hasn't done anything.

Holmstrom's been ineffective as well. He thrives on the power play, but unfortunately we haven't been on the PP too often. The play seems a bit too quick for him.

Pavel, we need you.

x2

most of his shots seemed to be from outside, but thats when the other guys need to be in front to make things happen.

Ouch. You had to use the word limp didn't ya? Or maybe flaccid. Hossa needs viagra.

He could have his own ED commercial.

If they just stopped turning it over in their own end they would be fine. They had them, up 2-1 with two straight PP's they were this close and then just fell apart.

Take today off and rest, they know what they have to do and how they have to do it. Add to that home ice and I think they are going to do just fine in Game 5.

Ozzie is in no way, not even 1% responsible for last nights loss. He kept the team in it!

It's special teams and turnovers causing all the grief...

- Sh*t at PK's

- Mediocre on the PP

- Fantastic at turning over the puck

Here's one thing I don't get - If I'm trying to shoot a puck, and there's a D-man standing 3 feet in front of me - I may be a little cautious that the puck may bounce of him and go behind me leaving me screwed (It's not made of lead ffs). Hit it down the boards, play it across the blueline, hell- even hit it back to Ozzie - but don't just rifle it against the defense-mans legs!!!

(WINGS IN 6! - BTW, my prediction all along! )

My 2 cents: The reason the Wings are losing is simple. On top of the atrocious penalty kill, the Wings are simply making bad turnovers too frequently as a result of (IMO) being tired along with the Penguins doing a great job of clogging the passing lanes. On top of that, the Wings are playing too much dump without any chase. The Wings have had plenty of success carrying the zone these past four games, so I'm not sure the reason why they're dumping in so softly and getting no pressure. Game 3 was a different story due to Babs constantly trying to get Z out against Crosby, thus the dump-and-chase without the strong forecheck due to making line changes, but yesterday it got frustrating to watch.

The Wings have had plenty of luck carrying into the zone. What they need to do to win is Forecheck, Forecheck, FORECHECK! Continue to press in O-zone with atleast 2 guys. The off Wing can cover if its get turned over, but they need to sustain pressure more frequently then they have. You can tell the magic they have when they're holding the zone, now they just need to forecheck relentlessly to create more chances, which is what they need to be successful. That, eliminating turnovers and a better first pass out of the zone are the keys.

1) The Wings are losing because of disgusting turnovers. The short-hander last night was the 2nd or 3rd break on that same PP the Wings allowed.

2) The trailing player has stopped skating countless times and there is zero puck support in the corners.

3) Our best players haven't stepped it up offensively yet and its finally starting to hurt us.

4) The lack of our best shutdown forward/offensive threat for the past 6 games or so is very evident. I think if any of us were asked before the playoffs if the Wings would win the cup with Datsyuk out, many of us would say probably not, even though the young kids have stepped in admirably.

Overall, the Red Wings are losing because the Detroit Red Wings we know haven't showed up for a single game this series, or really even the whole playoffs. Something has to give soon, I can't watch anymore hockey like this, riddled with mistakes, laziness, and poor decision making.

Right now I really miss Todd McLellan.

Great observation. He was a mastermind in many ways. Seemed a no nonsense type of guy as well. Too bad his Sharks laid down and died, but I think we will see more of him in playoff future.
