Why are pens fans mad?

ok so im 16 and i live in cincinnati. i've been a wings fan all my life because they were the first hockey team that i knew existed (i went to detroit the summer of 98 so it was right after the back to back cups). so needless to say, this is the only successful franchise ive had the pleasure to be a fan of. but this also leads to a great dislike for the city of pittsburgh. however, i still respect the city along with their sports teams. what im having a hard time understanding is why penguin fans are mad at us red wing fans. Those who were lucky enough to go to game 7 stayed for the cup presentation, and ive seen more "congrats pens" than "penguins suck" posts everywhere ive looked. however, all we get is crap from the pens fans. ive seen countless "detroit is a bad city" and "wings fans were disrespectful" posts. i just dont get it

Who is mad? A bit of a generalization I suspect. Like any fanbase Pittsburgh has its share of jerks but most people I know have nothing but respect for Wings. By my estimation Wings are one of classiest franchises in any major sport and I harbor no resentment towards Detroit. Nor did I last year.

Good to see you feel that way.

Unfortuantely a lot of the Penguins fans that have been on here during and since the playoff series have been absolute nutjobs, and not in a good way. Sure I expect some smack talking here/there but a lot of them on here have just taken it completely overboard, a lot of posts basically similar to people creaming in their pants about how great Crosby or Malkin are and how they can convert water into wine somehow. Not knocking those guys whatsoever, I know how great they are, and I think the disdain for Crosby in here is pretty nutty at times (but that's a discussion for another time/place) just as bad as a lot of the Penguin fans. I don't need to hear that they or the Penguins are just oh so perfect. Especially not in a place where you know you are going to be perhaps not welcomed as warmly given the recent scenario.

Yeah I'm still bummed about the Wings losing, but I'm not the bitter angry fan of a team that lost. In the grand scheme of things I don't really have anything against Pittsburgh (or any other team, except maybe Anaheim right now).

And of course not all Penguin fans are like this obviously, but a good lot of the ones that have come on here lately have been pretty pitiful.

First of all, welcome! You will quickley find this IS the standard for sports forums on the WWW! Much like the Detroit Red Wings are THE model franchise in ANY sport!

Second, Cinci, eh? I dated a girl that lived in Erlanger for a long time! Spent a few long nights at Big Bone Lick State Park with her! (To anyone who doesn't know, that is the REAL name of the park.)

Now, on to topic, pens fans are mad at us because we aren't as upset as they were last year about losing the Cup finals. Although we regard the Stanley Cup as the highest and hardest Chalice to acheive and hold on to, we really don't care that they won, aren't that upset anymore that we lost and are already talking about 2009-2010. Oh, and unlike the 40 of the 50 states, we aren't on our knees bowing down to Cindy and his girls. We know him for who he really is and they cannot defend it, they just want us to say he is God and the Pens will have the best dynasty ever seen in the history of the NHL. And we won't say it, because we know its not going to happen and can give them reason why, ligit reasons why and all they can say is, "pens rule!" "Crysby is God!," "We ***** slapped you!" "Injuries had no bearing on the result!" "No way Bettman helped us!" Yadda, yadda, yadda, etc, etc...

They cannot stand the fact that we are over it, because we know we'll be there more in the next 5 years than they will. When all they did was cry, cry, cry (much like the San Jose Kid did on his broadcast) last season and are mad that we are not doing the same. They cannot understand why we don't think the same of Cindy as they do, they don't understand why we can't say they beat us fair and square, we can't say that Malkin is better than Zetterberg and Datsyuk, because even though they know these statements are false, they believe their own rhetoric and the crap the NHL/Bettman puts out there and actually believe they are going to win every Cup until the end of times, and cannot believe that we don't agree with them.

That should help you out a little, too bad most of them are gone now, they went back to the pens forum with the ego's bruised, back to where everyone agrees with everyone and they have noone to tell them otherwise and they can walk down their narrow hallway never seeing the truth right in front of their eyes. (sorta like when the President spews his garbage to his sheeple.)

Bottom line, they are mad because we aren't, and they cannot understand why. They are just Gary Bettman's sheeple, and like the lambs to the slaughter, they will feel doublecrossed next year when one of Gary "Next Ones" get their Cup and they are left wondering, what happened t our Dyansty?. My guess is it'll either be Chicago or Washington (or both in the finals.)

I'd give you 3:1 odds that neither Washington nor Chicago are in the finals next year. Expect Detroit and Pittsburgh again in a rubber match.

I think the Caps have the best chance of coming out of the East next season, the Bruins having the 2nd best shot.

However I feel the Hawks still need another year or two. But they will be there soon enough. They got amazing young talent.

Let's not paint all Penguin fans with one brush stroke.

I could care less if there are Red Wings fans that are not mad. I'd rather discuss hockey with a fan that's not upset than a fan that's still blind with anger and howling about losing. I think as far as what you might come across on the internet, we tend to notice negativity or sentiments that we don't like a little more. It's a lot easier to remember a post that gets you riled up and angry.

As for any of the crap that Wings fans might be getting from Penguins fans, a lot of it is backlash. Let's not forget that Penguins fans were also on the receiving end of a lot of crap from Red Wings fans all last year. We got laughed at and jobbed for losing in the finals, and laughed at over Hossa bailing. Wings fans also invaded some of the Penguins boards last year and caused problems. Now, I'm not saying "it's your fault!" ...because every fanbase has fans that do this. But generally, hockey fans aren't ones to turn the other cheek.

Trash talk really isn't my thing unless it's with really good friends because we know each other well enough to both know that it's not mean spirited and all in good fun.

I think making fun of cities is stupid. Penguins and Flyers fans do it all the time, but it just seems dumb because it has nothing to do with hockey or other sports. (I do laugh at jokes about Rocky being Philadelphia's only winner in the last quarter century up until the Phillies, though.) Making fun of an economic situation should be off limits. As I mentioned elsewhere, I am self-employed and this recession really hit my business very hard and now I'm trying to look for a job working for someone else, with no success yet. It's just been a very scary year.

I tend to think people that laugh about things like that somewhere down the road end up getting laid off. (Makes me think of a depressing song by the Smiths, "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore")

As for next year, I think Boston is built a little better than the Capitals at this point, but there's still two deadlines for teams to get structured before the next playoffs. I'd laugh if it was some random Cinderella team out of the East in the finals next year that nobody's really talking about all that much right now.

50 bucks for $2500- I'll take those odds in a heartbeat.

Pens barely made the playoffs this year...it took a coach getting fired to get them in. They didnt even win their divison. Oh and chalk it up to stanley cup hangover. Every team goes thru it and the Pens are no different. Lot of the recent cup winners (tampa, carolina, anaheim) come back the next year and are not even the same team, in some cases...not even make the playoffs.

The 4th seed for Pittsburgh is pretty misleading and they were better than what that indicates. A lot of teams in the east "barely" made the playoffs because the race was so tight. We had lost Gonchar for much of the season due to shoulder injury. He quarterbacks our power play and is one of the most valuble players on our team. I don't think a lot of people outside of Pittsburgh realize how much losing him hurt us. We also had one of our worst franchise years ever for number of man games lost to injury this season. It's all pretty strange because they did have one of their best starts in franchise history that fall. Therrien wasn't a bad coach for them when they were younger a couple of years ago. He was good at fundamentals and whipping them into shape but they just tuned him out after a while. A lot of players hated his trap system and Bylsma's system suits them much better.

So no, the Penguins didn't just plow through the year like Washington and Boston but by no means are they an inferior team. I don't know who will be back for the finals. Too early to say at this point. It's not something I'd bet money on myself, but Detroit and Pittsburgh back again within the next couple of years wouldn't shock me in the slightest.

It is a generalization, however, there is a huge portion of the people on letsgopens.com that seems to have a pure hatred for Detroit. I don't think that can be denied.

The latest complaining I read was that some were mad that Crosby didn't make first or second all NHL team. (Maybe it's because he was only a plus 3, despite scoring 103 points) They were mad that Datsyuk made it and Crosby didn't. Granted, some people didn't take that stance, however a number did.

I didn't respond because why on earth would anyone care about that enough to make a new thread and complain about it?

I have a theory on their hatred. The entire fan base seems to have an incredible love for Crosby. If anyone or anything poses a serious threat to something you care deeply for, you begin to dislike it. Maybe many Pens fans realize that the Wings can shut down Crosby and expose his weaknesses. I don't know, it's just a theory. Since they have the Cup, I can't imagine why any of this would matter to them, but for some reason it does. I bet Crosby would rather play badly and win the cup than play well and lose it, but the fan base seems to take it personally whenever he doesn't play well.

Meh.. Pens fans are wannabe's.

I think they thought that by winning the cup they would magically aquire some class and be on par with the Wings and their fans.

That failed so they are pissy.

Pens + cup still = same ole sorry Pens

Guess it stings a bit.

No offense but when I read this thread I sense a lot of anger from some of the Red wings fans posting in this thread.

Crosby brought out bandwagon fans from the woodwork -- and those guys are simply annoying. They have absolutely no clue the organization was almost doomed three times - twice saved by Lemieux and once by Crosby. Long-time fans know this and respect it.

Their fan-base should be a lot less annoying in a few years.

The Wings have had almost 20 years of bandwagon fans now... so the majority have found a semblance of a clue over the years.

With regards to LGP, I don't think the Penguins are exactly all that popular with some posters on here, either. Penguins fans hate of Detroit is only fairly recent, and it isn't just about how Crosby performs (or is shut down) against them, there's a lot more to it than that. Directly vying for the Cup two years in a row has changed a lot of things. (I knew a lot of Pens fans in the 90s that loved Detroit, especially when they swept Washington in 1998.) :-)

But we definitely are very protective of Crosby in general. There's a lot of backlash that goes our way about Crosby for whatever reasons, but I think it probably bothers the fans more than it does Crosby himself. I think a lot of the complaints about whatever individual recognition Crosby doesn't get (all star, etc) has a lot to do with the "who is the league's best" pissing contest that goes on, which only means so much when hockey is a team sport. And you're right, I don't think Crosby is losing sleep over it.

I don't know if "mad" is the right word to define Pens fans... I'm leaning towards that they're jealous. I get this from reading their threads and comments on their boards. They want to be defined as the new "Hockeytown" and are trying to convince people they are the new "dynasty" in NHL. However, the statistics doesn't work in their favor when it comes to Detroit's continuous success and that pisses them off and enrages them with jealousy.

They all expect Bettman to use his peter wand and grace them as the new "hockeytown". I read some of their boards when some posters (other team fans) pointed out that Penguins were more lucky to win the cup (due to Wings injuries and poor scheduling) and the Pens fans go NUTS! In some cases, mods and admin delete the thread because it gets so out of control over there.

Penguin fans think they deserve full entitlement of "dynasty" label, despite the fact that Pens sucked for a long time and nearly went bankrupt due to no fan support. I think the some Penguin fans are realistic and know they will never be a 'dynasty' and their GM (Shero) isn't savvy enough to hold his team together in the cap world to maintain a competitive team down the stretch. I do think they get mad when people tell them that this is going to be their last cup for another 20+ years.... which holds truth to it due to the way Shero is running the team.

I guess they are kind of mad because Detroit will be the best team in the NHL for at least 10-12 more years ( probably longer). They are mad that the Red Wings has been the dynasty team -- and earned it through blood-sweat-and tears -- for the last 15 years and will continue on for the next 10-12.

When you think about it's quite interesting- Wings have 4 Cups since 1990- Pens have 3- if Pens win another one they are dead even as far as post Oiler domination is concerned.
