MadMan Mark 0 Report post Posted June 24, 2009 I'm wondering the effect of the Wings participation in the Winter Games this year. Just want to hear other fans' thoughts on the subject and does anyone know when the Olympic teams rosters are announced?
RusDRW 155 Report post Posted June 24, 2009 I know one thing for sure - some of our players will be happy at the end. Some are not. It won't affect us drastically. Offtopic: Although I'm Russian I think Sweden will take the gold. I also like Canada's chances. You simply can't be worng with Steve and Mike.
Guest mindfly Report post Posted June 24, 2009 2006 wasn't very good ending for detroit... although our swedes won the gold the stanley cup run didnt go well at all.
MadMan Mark 0 Report post Posted June 24, 2009 I have to believe in a Sweden-Russia Gold Medal game, depending on draws, etc. However, the host country will have quite the following in Vancouver.

HadThomasVokounOnFortSt 878 Report post Posted June 24, 2009 Shouldn't hurt the team, I almost think it would be a good thing that your still skating in the off-season.

RusDRW 155 Report post Posted June 24, 2009 Any of the following games will be fantastic to watch: Russia/Sweden Sweden/Canada Russia/Canada you can add Finland's games as well. They are not the most talented team but they always fight to the end. I still remember 0-5 dissapointment in semifinals after beating Canada in quarterfinals. germanwing 154 Report post Posted June 24, 2009 Any of the following games will be fantastic to watch: Russia/Sweden It would be interesting, how many Red Wings would participate in this game!? Russia: Datsyuk Sweden: Zetterberg, Franzen, Holmstrom, Lidstrom, Kronwall, Ericsson (?), Lilja (?),

Russia: Datsyuk Sweden: Zetterberg, Franzen, Holmstrom, Lidstrom, Kronwall, Ericsson (?), Lilja (?), Yeah, the Swedish team could hurt us. I honestly think it's going to hurt us during that part of the season. Lucky enough, it takes place during our annual mid-year collapse so it won't be too out of the norm. Electrophile 3,554 Report post Posted June 24, 2009 I thought they shut the league down in 2006 during the duration of the Olympics so that the players could go? I don't remember the Red Wings playing during the Turin games.
bonan78 1 Report post Posted June 24, 2009 I for one hope that Team Sweden tanks it hardcore, not because I don't like them, I just think that the best possible outcome for the Red Wings would be to have their Team Sweden contingent not have a long medal run in the Olympics. That being said, I think that the Olympics will definitely take it's toll on our team, but many of the elite teams in the league will be well represented in the Olympics. It will be interesting to see what the standings look like right before the Olympic break, and how it affects who makes it to the playoffs as well as how teams like ours who have a lot of players playing in the Olympics once they reach the playoffs. I honestly hate the idea of shutting down a business like the nhl in the middle of the season.

Russia: Datsyuk Sweden: Zetterberg, Franzen, Holmstrom, Lidstrom, Kronwall, Ericsson (?), Lilja (?), Dont forget Filppula for team Finland Rafalski Team USA if Hossa is around he will go too, maybe Hudler too if he is around THe olympics should be a break for the core of the players a mid season rest could be good for those players who may be tired or injured I think with 2 long playoff runs resting roll players and bangers and crashers will help the wings even though there are a handfull of players going to play in these games. Id hate for a freak injury a la Hasek when he was with ottawa and went to play and was injured for the rest of the year. Babcock might learn a few things from his assistant coaches as well, he is surrounded himself with some great vetran coaches who have seen alot of hockey, should be great for every player either on or off the ice. It's pretty much in the middle of the season.

I was making that comment to someone who was saying the Red Wings would be in trouble while half our team is in Vancouver. It's not like we'll be on the ice with half the GR team, there won't be any games to play until the Olympics are over.

Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted June 25, 2009 I hope Sweden blows it hard, like loses all there games 10-0. Our players get rest, there pissed off and now they want want to win the Cup all the more.
Electrophile 3,554 Report post Posted June 25, 2009 Losing the gold medal won't suddenly make them want to win the Cup more, the two have nothing to do with each other. I want to see Nick and Hank and the boys win a repeat gold.....that would be an amazing feat.

eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted June 25, 2009 Wouldn't rule out Leino or Homer either. I doubt Homer gets selected with all the good young Swedish talent. Homer will be passed over because there are players like Franzen and other grinders who can do his job who aren't as old, slow, and defensively deficient. No, they aren't as good at screening the goalie...but taking a guy based on that alone would be like taking Draper for Canada based ONLY on his faceoff ability. Leino is one I missed though; he has a decent shot at the Finnish team, although I don't see him making the final roster.

I'm inclined to agree that if they made the roster tomorrow there's no way Homer would be on it, but if he manages to get back on track for the first half in '10 it's in the realm of possibility.
