Secondary targets disappearing fast

Posted by George James Malik July 01, 2009 18:35PM

If the Red Wings hoped to sign a complimentary forward or two to bolster their third or fourth lines, those players are disappearing fast, and have garnered high salaries:

TSN's signing tracker provides a summary:

Ian Laperriere signed with the Philadelphia Flyers for 3 years at $1.17 million per season;

Mike Knuble signed with the Washington Capitals for 2 years at $2.8 million per season;

Samuel Pahlsson signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets for 3 years at $2.65 million per season;

Mike Komisarek signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs for five years at $4.5 million per season;

And the rumors regarding Chris Neil suggest that four teams are offering $2 million-plus for his services. I'd imagine that Chat LaRose would command a similar amount, if not $2.5-3 million.

Yeah it sucks!

I'm not suprised the wings weren't major players today (for acqusitions at least), but I am stunned at the total inactivity!

No speculations, rumours.. nothing - not even for, as you say, complimentary forwards!

The thread title should be renamed to the "OFFICIAL NEGATIVITY [sKY IS FALLING]" thread.

Not negativity at all.

Just I, like many others I imagine, were excited with the potential "complimentary forward" we thought might be on their way to the Joe.

Maybe they can sell off their players and rebuild Flyers-style. That would sell tickets, and some of Detroit's corporate f***wads who don't show up for their season tickets. And the LGW would be happy.

Sometimes the best move is no move. The slaries teams are handing out today are crazy.

Good news is we'll actually have cap room and can make trades without shedding salary when the time comes.

The Wings have NO cap room and plenty of good under $1 mil. players in GR. What's the point of signing a slightly better (for now) veteran for $1 mil.? There's no cap space for anybody good who'll be more expensive.

Dont shoot me but what do you guys think about going after Brian Gionta.

Ive always liked him i think he would be a great replacement for Sammy and i think he would excel hear.

Thoughts?

at the right price, yes. he's small, but he's fast and good around the net. and he's surprisingly somewhat tough for a guy his size.

the wings would most likely have to sign him and let huds go.

At this point it'd be silly to make a rash move unless it made all the sense in the world and fell at Hollands feet. There will be better deals to be had for guys that can round the team out as the summer goes on and if worse comes to worse, at the deadline. Furthermore, there might even be some interesting trade possibilities as teams who are up against the cap from all the recent signings stop to check up on the balance sheets. The only guys I expected Holland to be interesting in signing were Hossa, Sammy and Hudler. I didn't expect any more and I still don't at this point.

LaRose could also give a bit of a hometown discount as well.

Again, the Wings have no cap room.

If both Hudler and Samuelsson are gone, the wings will have 9 F, 8 D and 2 G signed and $3,329,347 in cap space left to sign or bring up from GR 4 (!) more forwards. Bear in mind that there's a minimum salary of about $450K in the NHL. So if the 3 new forwards play for min wage, that would leave an absolute maximum of 1.9 mil. for a potential UFA forward. There's noone decent to be had at that price. And the 3 min wage scrubs would be brutal. Not to mention possible injuries, bonuses etc.

There will be no UFA signings, barring a trade of a roster player.

Seconded.

Agreed.

Maybe some folks around here need to realize that the season and playoffs are not decided on the first day of free agency, nor on trade-deadline day.

Do you know your club? How has the majority of our success come over the years?

Sure. Holland landed Hossa last year on the SECOND day of free-agency. Big whoop.

...but typically, it's not big name players that get thrown around every trade-deadline/free agency.

Maybe some of LGW needs to look at the free agency charts and some player stats and think about someone who isn't going to handcuff our GM when things do matter in this, the salary cap era.

Finally, for every complaint about how Malts, Homer, and Drapes offer nothing... look at Lieno, Helm, and Abdelkader.

(...and even Ericcson if you want to point fingers at our defensive corp.)

I expect that they will be taking up a lot more minutes during the regular season than you might imagine in previous years.

And I, for one, do not think that this is a bad thing.

*steps away from the megaphone*

Lappy for $1.1M isn't crazy at all...

I agree, but then again I don't know what another 38+ year old grinder would do for a veteran team. Lappy does not have the wheels Drake did either so don't use him as an example.

ok, Fiddler also signed for $1.1 in phoenix, I think he would've looked nice here for $1.1m. I am stll hoping for Travis Moen, but as for the salaries going around he ain't gonna come here for $1.25m....

Still here's my wish list for now:

Moen - $1.25

Yelle - $1.10

Then you still have room for Abby to come up and down to help Meech out with injuries....

I would like to see Tanguay here, but much like with Hossa, we don't have the Cap space...

BTW, Steve Sullivan 2 years $7.5 million? :lol: There is a LOT of overpayment going on, BUT there are teams getting better while we are (again) standing still (so far.)

Chicago got better....

Toronto, better...

Montreal, better...

Columbus, a little better...

St. Louis, has a much better goalie than Legace now, so improved they did...

Philly, better...

Detroit and Pitts are getting passed up by the competition...

Pitts just lost Garon too, he goes to Columbus...

BTW, We haven't seen any Satan to the Devils posts yet, we are usually good for a few of those this time of year, so here's te first. Lets see Satan in a Devils uniform! And he can wear #6, so from his right shoulder to his left it reads, you guessed it, 6 6 6!

We don't really need to sign anyone most of the teams are teams that need help to get better that are signing a lot of players. Look at SJ nothing major ... Wings have signed to major UFA's but that happened in the season ... Zetts and Franzen. Habs / Toronto / Atlanta all those teams don't have a core like the Wings do that is why they are spending.
