titanium2 867 Report post Posted August 4, 2009 According to capgeek the Wings also signed him so that he'll be a RFA after this year. It's an even better deal than I thought.
Carman 387 Report post Posted August 4, 2009 Really like the move. Eaves has some potential, and playing with some of the players in Detroit will certainly help him. We could end up grooming him into what he was supposed to be. Even if he doesn't turn his career around, you aren't going to get a much better player for league min anyways. I'm happy. Heroes of Hockeytown 694 Report post Posted August 5, 2009 How the hell did Kenny get this guy at 500k? In addition to trying to Cleary it and cash in next season, he's also getting that buyout money.
titanium2 867 Report post Posted August 5, 2009 In addition to trying to Cleary it and cash in next season, he's also getting that buyout money. Sure but I'm thinking he could've gotten more. This is a guy who apparently made 1.1 mil last season. He's been through some injuries but league minimum? This guy must really want to be a Red Wing. GMRwings1983 8,803 Report post Posted August 5, 2009 Holmstrom on the 4th line? I think there is a better chance of Babcock playing on the fourth line for most of the season than Holmstrom Based on the way Homer played in the playoffs, he belongs on the 5th line. The coaches need to make him earn his spot, instead of always putting him on the first line, as if he's some kind of star.
ShanahanMan 473 Report post Posted August 5, 2009 (edited) Good price as long as this is the guy who's just gonna be taking Abs' spot. I really hope this isn't the guy that Kenny wanted to sign who will "score 15-20 goals"..... What do you guys think? Can you give me some reassurance??? Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted August 5, 2009 Holmstrom on the 4th line? I think there is a better chance of Babcock playing on the fourth line for most of the season than Holmstrom If Holmstrom continues to struggle on the first line with Dats and Z, you better believe he'll be on the fourth. That's where he played for the majority of the playoffs. He's too weak defensively to play on the 3rd line (checking line). All we can do is pray he heals up this summer and comes back strong in October.

Probie 7 Report post Posted August 5, 2009 Have any of our guys who have fought recently not wound up with long-term injuries? These guys should just not be fighting. All the more reason for a tough guy. Remember the interviews of our players saying Downey gives them a charge of energy? Its cause he goes out and hits, and it gives them the idea in their head that they can play a more physical game with him around cause someone can stand up for them. All we can do is pray he heals up this summer and comes back strong in October. Homer started last year on a tear putting up good points early on. As the season wore on, he slowed down and got injured and by the ned of the season (playoffs) he was on the third line. Unfortunately, I think this year will be similar. Hell start out on the first, but cleary will take his spot later on. I want Prospal. We need the firepower, plus he hits. Just for a year.
Peleshob 0 Report post Posted August 5, 2009 If Eaves gets 10 goals and throws 150+ hits he's more than earned his cash. Tons of grinders and lesser skilled "goons" get upwards of 1 million. He's getting buy-out money, sure... but his worth to the Detroit Red Wings doesn't involve that. People who are going to complain if he doesn't turn out to be a 15-20 goal scorer are just being spoiled. If he does turn out to be a Dan Cleary type story, awesome. That said, I think that Detroit can still sign someone who will score those 20 goals (Prospal, Sykora, Bertuzzi).

There's your argument for why Abdelkader should stay on the roster. ADD: I actually think Eaves has better offensive upside than Cleary. He at least has a better wrister. Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted August 5, 2009 ADD: I actually think Eaves has better offensive upside than Cleary. He at least has a better wrister. I dunno... Cleary was pretty highly touted coming into the league as well. I'd say they're both near the same level with Cleary having better one on one moves against a goalie and Eaves having a better shot. Yak19 303 Report post Posted August 5, 2009 If there is an organization that can sculpt a player into his potential its the DRW. At $500k whats not to like about this pickup?????????? I would love to add Prospal for about 1.5-2 mill. Anyone who thinks this is a bad move... slowly put down the crack pipe, ball your hand into a fist and proceed to punch yourself in the face. VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted August 5, 2009 500,000 for (at worst) a 16 point season while being absolutely rock solid defensively? Very good signing. If Eaves breaks out like many think he might, since he'll be playing with a quality team and with a great team ethic, 500,000 for a defensively solid, offensive third liner? Absolute dynamite! Very cool signing, from what little I know about Eaves. There's really not much to complain about for that price. He has a LOT of potential, and even if he doesn't hit that potential it's not much of a loss, even in our cap-strained situation. Way to go Holland for making a great pick when so many were expecting us to settle for some craptastic "big name."

When he plays with Datsyuk at least stuff happens (most of the time). The past few seasons they were awesome together. Imagine him playing with Draper and Malts? Yikes. titanium2 867 Report post Posted August 5, 2009 Way to go Holland for making a great pick when so many were expecting us to settle for some craptastic "big name." With the exodus of free agents and all I was hoping for Kenny to uncover a new dependable player like a Sammy (yes, I said it) or Cleary. So far Leino and Eaves are on the list along with perhaps one more to come. We'll see who ends up being the bigger bargain.

So far Leino and Eaves are on the list along with perhaps one more to come. We'll see who ends up being the bigger bargain. Based on Leino's play over the course of his call up last season I'd say he's our best shot at a Rookie of the Year type player since Hudler's rookie year (although Hudler only got 10 mins a night that year, so Leino will have to get more minutes to put up the kind of numbers people expect from a RotY forward). Unfortunately for us, Ericsson probably won't get the kind of PP and overall mins per night to get much consideration as the RotY. Calder winners are only rarely d-men and those d-men almost always get to play 1st pairing minutes in that season.
HanKarin40 7 Report post Posted August 5, 2009 Kenny never ceases to amaze me! Good signing for 500K. Even if Eaves turns out to be a bust, it's not like we threw a bucket full of money out the window. I also like the fact that there is still money on the table to sign another free agent (hopefully not Williams). Another great move by Holland!

To be eligible for the award, a player cannot have played more than 25 games in any single preceding season nor in six or more games in each of any two preceding seasons in any major professional league. The player must not be older than 26 years before September 15 of the season in which he is eligible. ( Source ) Hell if any Red Wing can get a nomination then I'll be more than happy. They'll have joined a list that includes Stevie, Nicky and Zetty.
