Ken Holland about next years roster and williams

Jason Williams is our Lord and Savior. GMR hates Europeans. Crymson has zero tolerance for anything that isn't 100% positive.

The more things change...

That's true, because I'm convinced that Lilja is really Canadian and Williams is a Euro. Also, I hate that chick in my avatar.

BTW, speaking of avatars, I love your avatar, but how on Earth did you manage to have your picture taken with Dan Cleary?

The master of self-righteous hyperbole has returned!

I'm not thrilled about the signing, but as others have said, it is a one-year deal. Hopefully, Williams treats it like a contract year and steps it up a few notches. If he sucks on this team, he won't get s*** from Detroit or anyone else next off-season.

Lidstrom and Rafalski are going to be 40 and 37 years old respectively by the time the playoffs roll around next year. That "strength" could turn out to be a major weakness pretty quickly.

Yea Lids is 39 but he was also a runner up for the Norris Trophy this past year. That means that he is one the top 3 D-men in the league. Ralfi finished the regular seaon tied for 3rd in points in the league. He was tied with guess who? - Lids and Neidemeyer.

In the playoffs, Lids and Ralfi were tied for #1 in +/-. Lids finished #1 in points and Ralfi was #4. This is despite Lids playing 21 of 23 games and Ralfi playing 18 of 23.

So unless they go from two of the best d-men in the league to crap in 1 year, I don't follow your logic. Neither has shown signs of slowing down. You think that they are going to fall apart in 1 year?

I think the overall frustration is less about the potentially negative impact Williams will have and more about the potentially positive impact someone else like Grier would've had.

Exactly. As ussual the LGW crowd were hoping for a tough guy like "broke back" Bert or even Grier. That's what it's all about, they didn't get their tough guy.

Some of them, yes. But I'm opposed to the Williams signing as well, and I've never been on the "Enforcer Squad."

Right, because your unending crusade against "bandwagon" fans isn't the least bit self-righteous.

Pull the bug out of your ass, Crymson.

There's a bug in my rear end? My goodness! I'm being spied upon!

In any event, I'd prefer that to the telephone pole-sized stick you've got jammed up yours.

When you have a core of Datsyuk/Zetterberg/Franzen/Lidstrom, Mike Milbury can be the GM and the team would still win often. If Holland had a lot of input into drafting those players then he deserves credit. If not, well he's been lucky to have that core because many of his signings/trades have not worked out.

I guess we forgot this post.

Manoir, Holland has had some trades fail, but compared to other GMs he has a better track record. If I recall correctly, each year we won the Cup we made a move (usually at the deadline) that helped our team. Stuart in '08. Obviously Hasek, Robitaille, Hull, etc., etc.

I have faith in him. I'd also like to point out that a lot of his failings have not been "never should have signed this guy in the first place" but were in fact, good ideas that didn't pan out, i.e. Bertuzzi. Gambles he took. Unlike other GMs who lock up horrible players long-term. If he resigns Williams for 8 years and 700 billion dollar contract, then we can talk.

This year is all about filling/pluging holes, hence the 1 yr deals.

Next year is when the Wings become big players in the UFA mkt.

We will still have a more than competitive team that will make the

playoffs, gotta feeling that we wont win the central this year thou.

Yes indeed. Plenty don't like Williams, and that's unlikely to change. Fine. But if people can get past "DAMN IT S.O.B. WE SIGNED WILLIAMS BLAAARGH!!!!!!" hopefully it'll be realized that this signing wasn't all that bad. Wings have lost a good bit of scoring, Williams can light the lamp from time to time, hopefully fill some of the scoring gap. And he signed him IMO for a reasonable amount. Is it the ideal signing? Of course not. But it's not as bad as made out to be in here by plenty.

Saying that we won't win the division is a bit of a stretch IMO but whatever, right now that's going to be one of those agree to disagree kinda deals until the Wings themselves show us otherwise. I fail to see that much of a dropoff and the Wings should have little trouble making the playoffs once again. After that, we shall see...
