Devellano says Wings close to signing Bertuzzi

I would be absolutely blown away if the Wings moved Maltby, even if to Edmonton. In my mind there is ZERO chance that happens.

Despite the cap situation the Wings are in I could see a $1M signing of Bertuzzi. That being said, i think this is just a rumor right now and I doubt it will happen. Personally I wouldnt mind seeing it because then it forces Williams to earn a spot in the top 9 forwards as opposed to just handing it to him. It would also allow for the option to play Helm on the 4th line as opposed to centering our 3rd line when Helm's offensive abilities are limited. Despite not being a huge fan of Bertuzzi's I do think he'd even out our forwards pretty well and that'd enable us to spread out some grittier guys like Cleary, Franzen and Bertuzzi so that each of our top three lines have some speed, some scoring and a bit of grittier type players.

So I called Fan590 and they confirmed that Jimmy D DID in fact say they will have Bertuzzi signed within the week. They also said they'd post the transcript from last night's interview online sometime today....

Take it for what you will.....

Can't wait to see that transcript!! They should post the audio too!

Thanks ShanahanMan!

I was listening towatching Channel 4 this morning and they had both Mark Howe and Glenn Merkosky on, and they both confirmed the Wings were very close to a deal to trade spare parts Brett Lebda and Kirk Maltby to Edmonton for one of RW Jordan Eberle or C Riley Nash, both of whom are considered high-end prospects.

Whoa..talk about Edmonton shooting themselves in the foot. Were you kidding? I mean I'd be all for that - but Eberle is lights out, and Nash has pretty good potential too. Why would Edmonton take on the salary of an aging Maltby and a mediocre Lebda and give the Wings a potential star in return?

Yeah, I am sure he was kidding.

I hope somebody posts the link when they put the transcript up on the site!!

Suprised I haven't seen any line combonations including Bert!! ;)

Bert and Ernie?

I would have added Big Bird as a 3rd on that line also, but some people might misconstrue that Larry Robinson was trying a comeback like Theo Fleury.

While the Wings could use a body like Bert, it would take a total reprogramming of his mind to make it work.

Do we really want someone who plays zero defense, has a propensity to take shifts off, takes a lazy skate to the bench at the end of his shifts, takes too many, untimely, stoooopid penalties, and has shyed away from being an overly aggressive physical player ever since that day in 2004 that he had a lapse of judgement. ( I'm sure I left something out).

I used to like the guy, and was happy to have him here in '07, but he hasn't shown a desire to really play like he was once known for, since his suspension. When he was here, you could blame his recent back surgery. The last 2 seasons there was nothing to blame but his desire to just coast through the rest of his career. Sorry, he just doesn't do it for me.

Only upside I can see is I could take my Bert jersey back out of storage and get my money's worth out of it. :D

assuming eva unit zero's statement is true (I don't think he'd just make it up) that would be unreal... if the Wings were willing to split with those 2 to make room to sign Bertuzzi and get a prospect in the process, that's a big time win/win

I think he DID make that up and was using sarcasm.

Yeah, it's weird they haven't posted it yet. When I called earlier, they totally said they would. I don't know...

As people on HFBoards have mentioned, perhaps it was a repeat broadcast from July?

I don't know. The OP over there is pretty adamant that this was NOT the same interview.

Somebody needs to email them or something. Doesn't look like they are putting anything up on the site.

Plus, the whole, within a week thing has me thinking this is a new interview. At least I am hoping!

I really like this comment on the Mlive link!!

I wonder if they're looking for a utility player/net front presence assuming they want Franzen shooting more and that Homer's knees are suspect. I'd rather it not be Bertuzzi, but I can see him filling a couple little holes that may arise. Either that or the wings are hoping the Hawks heard this and will sign Bertuzzi to a 15 year contract.

Eva's post is either a clever jab, or a way to explain how the Wings might free up roughly ~1.7 million in cap space giving this rumor some credence. I would probably guess the former ;)

lmao.. that is great..

but anyways.. I wouldnt be too opposed to signing Bert.. Id rather have him in the line up than Maltby at this point.. And I do believe Bert still has something left in him as long as he can keep away from the stupid penalties..

well honestly it's one of the most believable things I've ever seen him post on this board that's why I gave him the benefit of a doubt

In what sense was it clever?
