Richards annihilates Booth

He caught nothing but Booth's head. Booth was caught looking a bit, but his head wasn't that low.

I'm sure he didn't mean to crank him in the skull, but if you're gonna throw open ice hits, you're responsible when you miss. To me that's definitely a penalty, and he'll probably end up with a suspension. Live by the sword die by the sword.

Hit to the head obviously. Technically the hit was clean by the rule book, but there have been many cases where suspensions were given out for identical types of hits. Something is coming to Richards.

1st Richards pounds the stuffing out of that pronstar in the one thread and now this mega hit?

Dirty hit, he should of let up. No reason for such a hit this early in the season. Head shots are a no no.

Dirty hit, he should of let up. No reason for such a hit this early in the season. Head shots are a no no.

These are two points that kept coming up in the Mitchell/Toews hit thread. Two things I can't figure out, though:

1. Exactly how does one let when he is skating fast enough to lay a hit like that, when there may be no indication that it's going to end that ugly? Let's say he let's up, throws off his timing, maybe he loses balance and get's hurt, maybe he misses and takes himself out of the play leading to a scoring chance for Booth or whoever else. Rag on Richards time.

2. What does the beginning of the season have to do with laying a big hit? Checks are valid any time of the season, so why do people say it's too early? If you can take the guy, you do it. If you don't, once again, maybe it leads to a scoring chance. Rag on Richards time.

If it's too early, when is it time for this hit? After the All Star break? After the Olympics? Please, someone answer this.

I think it was a clean hit with an unfortunate result. It didn't look like he was trying to take him in the noggin. His shoulder was low, but then Booth went low as well. I hope Booth will be all right, cuz I hate seeing any player get injured.

Bad hit by Richards.

If you are going to get the head, you should at least be competent enough to get SOME of the body. All he got was helmet.

Yikes.

EDIT: I take that statement back. Richards got a good portion of the upper body. Still I really think he got too much of the head.

feet on ice, no elbow, no charge, jsut a head hit, completely legal, and whether it is a headhunt or not is debatable.

Completely agree, wasn't that dirty of a play. Messier and Stevens would hit people like this all day and the other team wouldn't even question it. Booth put himself in a vulnerable position and Richards finished a check good for him. Hopefully Booth isn't injured badly he is a very good player.

For the ppl criticizing this hit, you should take a look at yourself in a mirror every time Kronwall lays someone out. He caught him admiring his pass and he deserved to get clocked. There was zero elbow and from that video there is no evidence of it being interference. Richards is a classy player he didn't mean to knock the kid out as he did I'm sure, but hockey is hockey. There are 2 rules pounded into you as a child. Keep your stick on the ice and KEEP YOUR HEAD UP!!!

I think the hit was kinda dirty, probably not intentional but if you are gonna put everything into a hit like that, you cant touch the head.

To Rivaled who keeps saying that its 'too early in the season' for hits like this.... That is the most intellectually bankrupt statement ever. Hitting is not seasonal. I can understand the argument for a preseason game, but once the season begins, hits are fair game.

Also you call it a 'dirty hit'. So by your logic... later in the season is an appropriate time for dirty hits? But now? You have yet to explain yourself on this flawed logic of hitting only be allowed in the latter months of the season.

comes off dirty to me, he seems to focus on nothing but hitting him in the head. Hope Booth is ok, it is dirty but wasn't insanely out of the realm of hockey and will always happen; basically it's a borederline with a s*** happens moment (I've been drinking)

That's definitely not clean. Regardless of whether you want to argue "legal vs nonlegal" or "elbow vs shoulder" or "late vs fine" its not a clean hit. Players need to respect each other more than they do now. Richards could have pulled back or avoided making 100% of his contact with Booth's face. Checks aren't meant to be made to the head.

Some hits are more brutal than others, and it looks like it went shoulder so shoulder and the follow through went to the head, as Booth was caught watching his own pass and leaning the wrong direction. Was it necessary to make that hit? No. However, the league has seen too many of these so no doubt Mike Richards will be made an example of. My guess is maybe 5 games.

Everyone believes Kronwalls hits are clean. Which I would agree. Richards was cleaner then Havlat hit. Havlat NEVER touched the puck. It annoys me to think there are Wings fans saying that wasn't clean when they condone every hit clean or borderline by Kronwall.
