Q. You're in good mood. Are you getting better?

OVECHKIN: I am better. But I will miss 4-5 weeks.

Are you serious?

I actually plan on starting practice on the ice next week.

I know that you did skate already.

Yes, but after I did that the doctors told me not to do that yet. And not to have a stick in my hands.

It's noted in the article that these numbers were from a conversation w/ Ovie, and not figured from doc's etc.

Shame. Hopefully he doesn't back down because of it (and doubt he will).

Umm, his team apparently has a different answer. Weird.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=4635951

The Washington Capitals denied a report Sunday that Alex Ovechkin's return from an upper-body strain will take longer than the original timetable given.

According to Yahoo! Sports, Ovechkin said, "I am better. But I will miss four to five weeks."

"The Washington Capitals dispute the validity of this report," the team told ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun.

Ovechkin was injured in a 5-4 overtime loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Nov. 1. He left the game early in the second period and has not played a game since.

Coach Bruce Boudreau said Tuesday that they were hopeful Ovechkin would not miss more than two weeks.

"I think that it's tough," Ovechkin told Yahoo! Sports. "November has just begun. I need to heal up 100 percent and then play. There is no need to risk right now."

Ovechkin did not specify in the report whether a doctor told him he would be out longer or if it was from his own evaluation.

Too bad. Outside of injuries to our own, the last thing I wanted to see this season was the most exciting, dynamic player in the league go down, and unfortunately, my worst fears have been brought to life. Damn you, hockey gods!

His style of play will sadly lead to him being injured a lot..

He missed 2 games due to injury in his first 4 years. Based on that I can't say this injury is necessarily a sign of things to come. He plays a rough, reckless game, yeah, but he's only been seriously injured once in 5 years.

So much for that 80 goal season

He'll still crack 60. He started crazy slow last season and ended up scoring at a retarded pace through the last half of the season. There's no reason to think he won't do that again. I'd still pencil him in for 60+ goals given that he's already at 14.

Edit:

A month is about 12 games, give or take, so he'd still have around 70 games to score his 60. He's already at 14 in 14 games played, so that means he'd have to exceed 46 goals in the last 56 games. That's a pace of 0.82 goals per game. Two years ago he scored 65 in 82 games (0.79 goals per game). Last year he hit 56 in 79 (0.71 goals per game). So far this season he's cruised at a 1.00 goal per game pace. All he needs to do is get back in 12 or fewer games and he's on track for another 60+ goal season.

Yes, but as he ages, his body won't respond the same. I suspect he will change his game as he ages, or he will likely fall to more injuries.

If you think about guys that have avoided injuries their whole career, even into their late 30s, it's largely due to style of play, more than luck. Lidstrom is ther perfect example. Not only is his style of play not based on being a physical, bruising defenseman enabled him to avoid injury, it's also enabled him to maintain a high level of play....which does erode eventually, just not as quick as others.

I hear this type of comment a lot, and I simply don't buy it. He's shown to be very durable, and even this injury seems to be pretty minor. Look at any other big star who's come into the league recently and you'll see they've all suffered longer and more threatening injuries than Ovie: Semin, Crosby, Malkin, Kopitar, etc..

I agree there. Once he's in his 30's we'll definitely see him banged up more.
