dat's sick 1,002 Report post Posted November 17, 2009 Even though he let in some soft goals against Anaheim, I'm beginning to get some more confidence in Howard's potential to be a solid back-up for us. I think it's good for him to get these consecutive starts instead of just playing a game here and there. As for the lines, there's no need to change anything. rage 24 Report post Posted November 17, 2009 Maltby hasn't played in a while. Wonder if he'll get the start?
WizardOfOz30 1,886 Report post Posted November 17, 2009 I think it's great that Howard has done so well so he deserves the start again, especially if Ozzie isn't 100%. I doubt Lilja will be playing, but that would make me so happy to see him on the ice again.
hooon 1,089 Report post Posted November 17, 2009 I also wouldn't mind seeing Maltby get some more time. Remember when he was our leading scorer!? I hadnt heard that new news about Lilja, but I reeaaaallly would love to have him back. Imagine if we got him and Franzen back at the same time around playoffs. The lines are finally meshing, and Babs seems to be finally sticking with them. Howard has been good, but I'm still not sold on him. For some reason he always seems like he's way out of the net and lets rebounds just sit in front of him forever. He's getting the wins though and that's what counts, I like that he's getting all these starts and warming to the task.

He's playing just good enough for now. Maybe he's just increasing his trade value. I hope he breaks out and turns into an all-star goalie, I'm just not getting too excited until I see him start to improve his rebounding, positioning and mental strength. dat's sick 1,002 Report post Posted November 17, 2009 Your new pic. Is that Z at the Palace of Auburn Hills? Where did you find that? Yep, it's from the other day when Zetterberg, Lidstrom and a couple of other players were at the Pistons-Mavericks game. You can find it here, along with a nice pic of him and Pavel at the game: http://www.reuters.com/search/pictures?blo...troit+red+wings
Carman 387 Report post Posted November 17, 2009 Keep playing Howard until Osgood is 100%, or Howard messes up. No reason to change anything when we are winning.
miller76 463 Report post Posted November 17, 2009 I think these lines work for now. I like who is on what line and with whom. I am really liking the play of Helm and Eaves lately. And of course our stars are playing like stars, so that helps.

I wouldn't say that. I'm probably one of the biggest "negative" people about Howard, but he can certainly be a long term solution. Goalies are very strange usually don't develop until 5-10 years pass. He has the ability and potential to become an outstanding goalie overnight.

It's legally retarded to give up on a former blue-chip goaltending prospect after a dozen or so NHL starts. If every team did that 99% of the goalies in the league would've been dumped by their first teams.
gcom007 1,465 Report post Posted November 17, 2009 I'm not saying this to bash Osgood as that's not what I do, but all things considered, I'm glad Howard's getting a chance early on to carry the team for awhile and win some games. The more he plays, the better in my mind if only to see if he'll be able to handle the backup role at the NHL level.

I've got plenty of questions about Howard going back awhile, but none the less, you've got to give the guy a legitimate shot to see what he can do in the NHL as a full-time guy. That's why I think this Osgood illness is good timing. I mean, we're winning games with Howard and plenty of other injuries. Say what you want about his play here and there (I'm fine with it and I've been impressed more than a few times) but it's good that we're still winning with Howard AND all the injuries. That's a real good sign that he'll at the very least pan out as a backup. Obviously it's still early, but I've really got no complaints at this point and still say keep giving him the opportunity to answer all of our questions. He's earned it so far. Lets focus on this and leave the goalie "what-ever-ya-call-it" @ the door for a few... No, he's nowhere near being cleared to play. He doesn't have headaches every day, but he still has them, and now he has an inner-ear issue. It's gonna be a long time until he's back.
