egroen 384 Report post Posted December 7, 2009 http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/story/2009...e-nhl-hnic.html Here is the list of the proposed changes, with the current trophy names and new suggestions, according to Healy : •Hart (most valuable player) — Gordie Howe. •Art Ross (most points) — Wayne Gretzky. •Calder (top rookie) — Mario Lemieux. •James Norris (top defenceman) — Bobby Orr. •Lady Byng (most gentlemanly player) — Jean Beliveau. •Jack Adams (coach of the year) — Scotty Bowman. I hate the idea. And by the way, Beliveau never won a single Lady Byng. I would love to change the Mark Messier Leadership Awrd, however. If they are really going to change them, here are some of my suggestions: Calder - The Sidney Art Ross - The Crosby Hart - The Sidney Crosby Richard - The Ovechkin Selke - The Sid Norris - The Ybsorc Stanley Cup - The Bettman
NGKEIB 32 Report post Posted December 7, 2009 I also hate it (as well as the fact that Messier has any sort of involvement - the worst being how the Stanley Cup gets whored out so that it can feature, along with Mark, in some random kids basement surrounded by a bunch of chips), but I'm sure that's because I'm a backwards conservative. hooon 1,089 Report post Posted December 7, 2009 Yzerman needs a look for a leadership/captaincy award. I'm not sure how I feel about changing it. It seems like just an attempt to make the trophy awards more relevant for newer fans by giving them familiar names for association. I prefer history and tradition personally. Maybe add a couple categories and utilize those players mentioned.
Original-Six 254 Report post Posted December 7, 2009 No thank you. The NHL has already had enough of its traditions ass-wiped since Bettman became comish
Mors 201 Report post Posted December 7, 2009 Glen Healy can STFU. It needs to stay as it is, these people weren't just picked randomly, they're all historically important and relevant to the game.
datsyukismyfriend 4 Report post Posted December 7, 2009 lousy idea.
Doc Holiday 0 Report post Posted December 7, 2009 The Mark Messier Leadership award is not in the same category as the rest. Messier HIMSELF picks each finalist and winner of the NHL, and it is absolutely amazing the kind of guys he picks. The guy should not have his own award that he has full reign over. Not at all. Guest Lidstromboli Report post Posted December 7, 2009 it'll never happen. don't know why people are making a big deal out of it
EuroTwin 240 Report post Posted December 7, 2009 (edited) Wow. This is a complete waste of time. These players/people were chosen for a reason. Leave the trophies alone. ETA: I would like to add, heaven forbid someone should have to look something up if they don't know who that person is! It's so hard nowadays, what with the google and the internets. egroen 384 Report post Posted December 7, 2009 I wouldn't mind a Gretzky Trophy for most assists, and I think an Orr Trophy for defenseman with the most points has been long overdue - I think it will help keep players like Green out of Norris contention. stevkrause 1,247 Report post Posted December 7, 2009 one of the worst ideas ever - luckily, I would gladly wager any amount that it will not happen...
Chunkylover 26 Report post Posted December 7, 2009 The LGW version: Hart (most valuable player) — Derek Meech. Art Ross (most points) — Kirk Maltby. Calder (top rookie) — Ville Leino. James Norris (top defenceman) — Brett Lebda. Lady Byng (most gentlemanly player) — Jean Beliveau. Jack Adams (coach of the year) — Brad McCrimmon. Selke (defensive forward) — Tomas Holmstrom. Other than my recommendations, I think it's a bad idea. The number 99 is retired league-wide, isn't that enough? As for Orr, Lemieux, and Howe, are these guys really in danger of being forgotten if not immortalized? And my apologies to Monsieur Beliveau but other than what Mick says about him, he's not as well-known to me (and probably a few others) as the rest of the names on that list. If they really need to change the names, it should only be done posthumously. "And here is Scotty Bowman, winner of XXX number of the Scotty Bowman awards for top coach." Lame. jollymania 162 Report post Posted December 7, 2009 I could see changing the Ross to Gretzky but not much else needs tinkering
Namingway 146 Report post Posted December 7, 2009 Oh wow. Shouldn't they be concentrating more on other stuff such as fixing the lousy officiating or something instead of trophy names that are just perfectly fine?
RusDRW 155 Report post Posted December 7, 2009 Yzerman needs a look for a leadership/captaincy award. he is not a lock for that. Sakic is another person to consider. PS Too few Crosbys in this thread. Carman won't be satisfied and will come up with "you don't respect the best human in the world"...

Carman won't be satisfied and will come up with "you don't respect the best human in the world"... lol I'd be pissed if they'd name it after Sakic before Stevie Y. Joe was cool and all but just captain for 17 years all together on two teams. Sure, I know that it's from the same franchise but Yzerman was pretty much a captain for two decades for the same team and also won 3 cups compared to Sakic's 2. Also yeah, needs more Crosbys. The Sidney Crosby Trophy, awarded to the greatest human of the year.
