Re-naming NHL Trophies

Here's a wild idea NHL...why don't you focus on something that's actually important rather than discussing changing more things that should never changed.

What a waste of time this is.

Just imagine - it's Shanny's first day he sits down at the conference table and some idiot blurts out that idea.

he is not a lock for that. Sakic is another person to consider.

PS Too few Crosbys in this thread. Carman won't be satisfied and will come up with "you don't respect the best human in the world"...

World? Is there a star system somewhere out there with a better sentient being!?

Anyway, if we're to change names, I'd only be ok with two. One, the Yzerman leadership award as voted by more than one person. And I'd be ok with changing the Vezina to the Hasek or something since all he did was win. And s***, he should've had 8 instead of 6. I know Vezina's history and I'm ok with changing it because the original idea for the Vezina became the Jennings trophy we see today. But alas, Hasek is a magnet for ignorant hate and bashing so it will never happen.

And I do also vote to change the Stanley Cup to the Bettman Bowl. May as well, since he's been picking the winner since 08. Let's not forget guys, he tried just as hard to f*** us over that year but didn't succeed. Unfortunately for us, he did the next season. I like to think most intelligent, perceptive members of that Pens locker room knew it too.

I wouldn't mind a Gretzky Trophy for most assists, and I think an Orr Trophy for defenseman with the most points has been long overdue - I think it will help keep players like Green out of Norris contention.

I actually would like those two, but if you list two of the 3 greatest players to play, Mario Lemuiex would need one too. And then you have the whole thing about Gordie Howe still not having one as most probably the 4th best player ever.

How about the two you mentioned

Gretzky-Most assists

Orr-Defensive Scoring/offensivily gifted d-men

Howe-Best Powerforward/combination of toughness and ability to put up points.

I would love for Yzerman to have the leadership award renamed after him... he was a true leader, whereas Messier was a bald overrated ****** who thought he was too good to honor the Dead Wayne Maki, as well as apparently being Hostile and egotistical in his time with Vancouver. Some say he was the one who also forced the Trevor Linden trade (granted it worked out since they got Bertuzzi), who was a fan favorite at the time and the definton of grit.

We should just change the worst haircut award to The Healy Trophy

Wait, we don't have that award yet?

Someone get on that..

Here are some reasons why renaming these trophies are not only a slap in the face of tradition, but offensive in general:

Art Ross trophy:

Donated to the NHL by HHOFer Art Ross in 1947 to be awarded to the league leader in points.

Hart:

Donated in 1923 by Dr. David Hart, father of HHOFer Cecil Hart, to be awarded to the league MVP. The NHL retired the original trophy in 1960 and replaced it with a new one in memory of Dr. Hart.

Lady Byng:

Donated in 1925 by Lady Byng, the wife of the then-Governor General of Canada, to recognize the player who best represents the values of sportsmanship combined with a high level of playing ability. The original trophy was given to Frank Boucher in 1935 after he won it seven times in eight years, and another was donated. In 1949, when Lady Byng died, the NHL presented a new trophy in her memory.

Also of note:

Pat Burns holds the record for Adams wins at 3.

Jacques Demers is the only coach to ever win two Adams awards in a row.

The Adams award, Selke trophy, Norris trophy, etc. were named for people who were extremely influential in taking the league and building it into what it was and is today.

The Richard trophy was so named because Maurice Richard defined the idea of what an elite goal scorer was for generations.

Renaming any of these trophies would be an affront to hockey tradition and fans should be outraged at the idea.

The exact same thing was said when the CBC dropped the HNIC theme. Traditions aren't s*** in the NHL anymore.

I could live without every single stat having a trophy associated with it (we're almost there...)..... but the best offensive defenseman award is something I would certainly like to see... especially since the Norris has been used that way on many occasions.

I don't see the point of this.

Then again, nothing else the NHL does makes any sense either.

Nothing? At all?

Then why watch?

But they are already named after people...this makes no sense whatsoever. They are just renaming them to players who won them several times over the last half century.

I am only down if they change the name of the Stanley Cup to the Detroit Red Wings Championship Cup.

As long as they are going with a theme....im just sayin'.

the awards r cool, i mean theyre all named after legendary players or builders, and there is a history behind each one. especially the lady byng, she donated the trophy why would you take her name

In fact, you might even say to do so would be ungentlemanly.

No need for changes, it destroys the history of the game.

I can see additions. Like someone else mentioned, an Orr trophy for offensive defenseman makes sense. Trophies that focus on an aspect of the game that tends to be neglected are okay with me.
