Miss the grit of Dallas drake?

Take another look at Robin Big Snake.

Oh well now it's a whole new game unrelated to Wings prospects and now about ridiculous hockey player names.

Need someone to play gambit?

I think the whole indefinitely thing is just because other than the minimum two weeks they really don't have a good gauge on how long he will be out. They've done some tests on the ligaments but further tests are needed and they can't be done until the bruise heals, which will take about a week.

Hopefully its just the two weeks. We can't afford any more long term injuries.

Red Wings' Jonathan Ericsson upbeat about injury, has no ill will toward Shane Doan

BY HELENE ST. JAMES

FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Jonathan Ericsson can’t quite straighten out his left leg and can’t quite bend it, either, but given that he has no ligament damage to his knee, he is, more than anything, upbeat.

“I feel pretty good,†he said today, the first time he spoke since suffering a deep bone bruise when he was hit by Phoenix’s Shane Doan in the first period of Monday’s 3-2 victory. Ericsson is out at least two weeks.

“It could have been worse, a lot worse,†he said. “I felt my leg go in the other direction, so I felt something was wrong right away. I was just glad that it wasn’t worse. I was in here and they took a look at it right away, and the things that worried me the most, they were pretty stable right away. So that kind of got my hopes up a little bit more. Then the MRI showed there was nothing wrong with my ACL, so I’m happy.â€

The Wings won’t really have a firm grasp on when Ericsson might return until swelling subsides.

Ericsson bears no grudge against Doan, saying, “It was a clean hit, it’s just he hit my leg first and just hit the inside of my knee. That was where the big impact was. I don’t feel it was a dirty hit at all.â€

Doan reached out through a Wings trainer to say he felt bad about causing injury, according to Ericsson. “I appreciate those kinds of things," he said. "Even though it wasn’t a dirty hit, he was still worried. I kind of respect him more as a player right now -- he’s concerned about me after what happened, and it’s nice.â€

Ericsson joins a sick bay that already included forwards Johan Franzen, Valtteri Filppula, Jason Williams, Dan Cleary and Darren Helm, plus defensemen Niklas Kronwall and Andreas Lilja.

“It just feels like it’s got to be enough now,†Ericsson said. “We’ve had some unlucky injuries, and it just keeps going. Now it’s got to be a stop for it.â€

Oh... Well, you aren't good enough for me. Simple as that. What could I possibly learn from you and likewise for yourself? I'm not going to pretend as if this breakup is really about me because, well it isn't. Oh, and Santa is fake. A real life Santa robs you at gunpoint and rapes your wife. Have a wonderful Christmas.

Meh, not really a big deal. People are making the argument that he's young/inexperienced/whatever else which is why he's been a pretty average player.

Obviously he will get better and he's going to be a good player. But the point is more that, right now, it doesn't really affect the Wings a whole lot that he's injured. And it's not like it'll slow down his development either. It's a few weeks, it's not an ACL tear.

Not a big deal.

Despite popular belief, Ericsson has been great for us. He's been our top 3 defenceman behind Lidstrom and Stuart. His logging mininutes, not only on the PK, but overall is huge and now needs to be replaced by someone else. Might not seem like a big deal now, but as our (thin) defense start having to log Ericsson's minutes, we're going see how important E has been for us.

Get well soon E

I don't know about top 3 defensman, but I do agree that people are quick to attack this kid. As of this moment his entire NHL career spans over 58 games. That almost 75% of a single season spread out over three years. In other words, he's still learning how to play at the NHL level (especially the defensive level, because remember he was a forward until coming here). As such if the Wings had a healthy roster he would be getting about 8 minutes a night playing on the bottom six, where he could have the time to develop and learn from his mistakes how he and all other developing defensman should. Unfortunately that isn't the case. Instead he's been averaging around 20 minutes per night, often against top six players from the other team. There's a lot less of a forgiveness factor for mistakes in these situations. All things considered, I think Ericsson has been playing excellently.

Guest Lidstromboli

it seems like for every rookie mistake he makes (falling down, lebdas, etc) he'll make up for it with a really smart play, like when he shut down Lang on that breakaway

Agreed. It seems like no matter how times you say it, people still seem to think he is a first round draft pick that's played 5 seasons and has yet to live up to the hype.

He's a converted defenseman drafted dead last playing in what is essentially his rookie season. He's not gonna be the next Lidstrom, but it's already impressive what the guy has shown. Like I said, I think he'll be a solid top 4 defenseman if he continues to develop.

While I agree with you, it's not like hockey players have a window to play in that goes til they're 40. The prime for a hockey player nowadays is 22-29. After a player turns 30, the wheels start to go and the youngsters start to get a step up. There are players like Lidstrom and Chelios who train fanatically and give themselves a few years of extension to this principle, but for the most part, Ericsson has to develop FAST. He needs to be a great player within the next two years, or the Wings are going down.

That's a little dramatic, don't you think?

Yes Lidstrom will be hard to replace. Honestly he wont' be replaced. We've had the luxury of having him on the blueline for something like 17 years. The Wings defense can still be good, it'll just be different.

Ericsson will hopefully be a big part of that, but it hardly hinges on his development.

Isn't E only like 23? That's right in what you claim is prime (btw, Prime tends to end around 33 from what I've seen) and it's his rookie season.

He's 25 but still definitely has time to develop. And yes defensemen tend to hit their prime at early to mid 30s. Forwards probably a bit earlier.
