CenterIce 83 Report post Posted January 17, 2010 The Wings are playing dump and chase hockey right now, for the first time in a very, very, very long time. You can say it's because of all the Offense they have on IR. But you also have to watch the Games. When was the last time you saw the Wings spending so much time crashing the net, and skating so hard after rebounds.... IN THEIR OWN ZONE? By the time they get possession of the puck, many times they're so exhausted, all they can do is dump it down the ice and go for the change. Then the cycle starts all over again. That's not Red Wings Hockey. Red Wings hockey is to get possession of the puck, keep possession of the puck, and carry the play down into the Offensive zone. Play keep-away. While that leads to lots of shots on goal FOR the Wings, and fewer shots against, it also leads to more "dangerous" scoring chances against on the few shots they used to give up. Now? The puck is bouncing around their end of the ice like a ping-pong ball. They're chasing the puck. Sometimes they win that battle, sometimes they don't. But after all that chasing, (and don't deny that they are chasing), they don't have the energy to carry the puck down ice. So they just dump it down. Sometimes they win that battle. Sometimes they don't. This is nothing new. They have played a lot of dump and chase for years, now. They have also have had problems in their defensive zone for at least three seasons, now. But, nothing. I agree. I'm not above calling out May when need be. He should have gone after Ott in this game and basically forced the little s*** into a fight. luvmnger 125 Report post Posted January 17, 2010 i believe we will go after some "clutch" type of scorer....not a big numbers guy. matt cullen (plays all slots on offense with tenacity) petr sykora (we all know about his clutch) big scorers come with big price tags and trade assets i actually believe that holland may just let us fall a little to rise again. in the big picture...i think we will be in the playoffs (6-8th spot) if we falter...its because we dont want to throw away the next 5 years on one bad season detroit doesnt rebuild....they re-load. cup prediction....chicago vs. washington caps in 7 we go 7 with sharks and ruin their chances with chicago. Don't expect him to be putting up miracle numbers when he comes back, the guy IS just coming off an ACL tear you know. Even when a player is full healed, it takes quite a while to get your stride again. Maybe, but Franzen always gets off to a ridiculously hot streak when he comes off an injury. And I have a feeling Franzen at 60% is better than everyone else on the team right now. Franzen gets more potent each year, and all indicators pointed to him having a great year. No. People, we all know that this was going to be a transition year. If you didn't, well I don't know what to tell you. We will get scoring, just not this season. Kenny Holland will not, I repeat, will not, tear up the future of this team for one year. There will probably be no blockbuster trades, there probably won't be any trades, and if a trade were to occur, its most likely for depth on the defense. As for guys not performing, people have off years, its just that no one expected everyone to have an off year at the same time. But, nothing. agreed... the only time may fights is when it is a set up with the fighter from the other team. It is embarrassing imo. 2 guys laughing with each other in the penalty box after is not the point of a fight at all. It needs to be meaningful. Someone today should have gone after Ott to settle things down. As for the thread topic, the wings do not need to make a move. This team needs 4 solid lines, rather than one. The other team pretty much has to focus on one line, and that is it. We are missing important players, period. Williams scores goals, Holmstrom scores goals, Franzen scores many goals, and Kronwall plays great defense while also contributing offensively. It is frustrating to see the team struggling, but those players are important parts of this team. The first line scored two goals today but the team couldn't get any secondary scoring. Its not a matter of confidence, this team has traditionally got a ton of scoring from its defenseman and its not happening. Lidstrom and Rafalski, at this point are completely overpaid "Defensive defenseman". And it didn't just start happening this season, it started last year and wasn't exposed because of the many offensive tools on this team. You can't expect Datsyuk and Zetterberg to pick up the slack for all of the injured played, plus the players they lost last season and a slumping Lidstrom. Not even Ovechkin could pull that off. That is not injury prone, just unlucky. Selanne would be a great addition to this team. Imagine how much better our 2nd PP would look with Selanne and Franzen. All we would have to give up is a 2nd round pick and maybe a prospect. Once our guys get back (Franzen, Kronwall, Williams, Homer) then it will open up a lot more ice for Dats, Z, Lids, and Rafi, all of whom you guys say are 'underperforming', to start putting up the points. I expect a good playoff run for this team this year (if healthy). Just imagine how good our 3rd line alone will be with Filppula centering. Franzen - Dats - Homer Bertuzzi - Z - Cleary Eaves/Leino - Filppula - Williams Draper - Helm - May/Maltby/Miller Lids - Rafi Kronwall - Stuart E - Janik/Lebda That is a damn good team. Possibly add Selanne in there I think you are all forgetting, that we currently have Miller, who was WAIVED by the TAMPA BAY LIGHTENING playing as a top 6 forward. Jesus Christ that is scary. To me, Zetterberg has been a huge let down after signing his life-time contract. It's gonna be ugly, especially if we miss the playoffs. Does Holland REALLY have what it takes to rebuild this team? We will see, but I believe it's time to trade some future for the now. Of course, who are we gonna trade? Kronwall? Filppula? Leino? Meech? Who would want them?
