Leino to Flyers for Tollefsen and a 5th Rounder

Just wondering if he can be put down without being exposed to waviers?? That is the only way this move makes any sense without an additional move.

I would agree that this makes it look like the Wings are going to go with Lilja Janik and Tollefsen instead of Lebda and Meech. Another trade will prob happen by day's end.

I'm dissapointed tbh, Leino had more potential then this guy ever did, But I realize the salary problems, and maybe the 5th could become another Datsyuk.

TBH Tollefsen was only acquired as depth for the rest of the season and playoffs to make up for having to trade Lebda or Meech.

He is being assigned to Grand Rapids. Probably will never see a game in Detroit, and will not be re-signed at the end of the year.

It was mostly Leino for depth and a 5th round pick.

I wish Ville luck in Philly and hope he turns into everything I think he can.

Best of luck Leino.

Tollefsen was already placed on waivers, if he clears waivers by noon tomorrow all is good.

Lebda/Meech won't be traded and May won't be waived until Lilja is being activated.

I dunno guys.....

I see Leino having a breakout season next year (ala Quincey) and a LOT of pissed Wings fans......

I hope he does. I want him to succeed.

But there was no way he was going to accept an assignment to Grand Rapids, and Miller was a better option for this team for THIS season, which is what matters.

If the Wings were in first in the division and the playoffs were something that we already knew were attainable then I could have seen them hanging on to him for hopes of his potential, but there was no way he potential was going to help make the playoffs this year.

Thus they got something instead of nothing.

A depth defenseman for the playoffs/if there is an injury and a 5th round pick in 2011. Not great, but everyone knew Leino was gone anyways, rather get something than nothing.

I'll mis Ville and I wish him well but it was a good move to get a body with experience to replace Lebda or Meech in Grand Rapids in case they get traded too.

That makes sense too. Though I don't know how the roster freeze would mess up all these plans.

IF he clears waviers? Because that is an interesting part of this deal. Basically that just means we were okay trading Leino for a fifth straight up.

yea I concur... Leino has enough really good history to see that this guy has some major potential... he could easly turn into a solid 2nd line player next season... oh well I am sure Kenny knows what he is doing and its not like Wings didn't give Leino a chance to perform with all the injuries...

That is very possible. Thing you have to remember and keep in perspective is that for all the talent Leino had, he refused to play to our system. He straight up did not fit. With another team where he can be bull headed with the puck he might be able to make his mark, but he had proven to me that there was no shot that he could play our system.

am i the only one who thinks tolly is a good 6th, 7th d guy? he is already an upgrade over meech or lebda and who knows if lilja will ever be the same again. Good insurance policy IMO tollefsen is still young too so he could still improve. I dunno, I've always liked his game and he was solid for columbus, always noticed him when the wings were playing them cause he likes to run around and mix it up

So who will be the bottom pair when everyone is healthy?

Ericsson-Lilja?

Lilja-Janik?

Ericsson-Janik?

Lebda-Lilja?

Uhm

I agree with this. I'd rather have a 6th/7th guy who makes bone-headed plays sometimes but is scrappy instead of a guy who makes boneheaded plays and is softer than pudding.

Also... his initials backwards are T.K.O.

Think about it.

if you read the freep.com article, Kenny said that tollefesen will be placed on wiavers and sent down to Grand Rapids if no one claims him. Its all to clear $800,000.00 to allow Franzen to play tuesday. The best part is, they have to clearn around 1.1. million if/when Lilja comes back.

2 years ago, I would have taken lebda over lilja. now im not so sure.

so if he's in GR, no cap hit...

and now we just have to clear space for lilja...and if my (fuzzy) math is correct, we won't have to do much more than waive may and lose lebda...

or are we still kind of crunchy? i'd really like to understand all this cap-crap one day!

okay, so i alter my original prediction...meech gets to stay since he can double as a forward to offset leino. capfreaks, start your calculators!

EDIT: dunno if i'd've really traded leino for a fifth, but watching him play this season sure made me feel like DRINKING a fifth!!

I really wanted to see Leino work out for us and the wings. I still think that he is a better player than his performance this year indicated, and its too bad that he didn't at least maximize his trade value. I wish him the best and hope that he can find some kind of groove. Also hope Tollefson works out.

Looks to me like they're definitely getting ready to get rid of another D-man.... or maybe two.

Disappointed in Leino this season, really expected more. But I trust that Holland used all his resources, and I always enjoy when Holland can grab an extra 5th round pick in trades  . Tollefson is not good though, injury prone, a turnover machine, I don't see him being a whole lot better then Janik to be honest.

I know this isn't really a surprise... but it kinda is, Babcock kept talking about his potential and when people asked him about leino and a trade he always said they want to keep him around until he turns into something more.

I really hoped at the end of last year that leino would be a great player for the wings, and I still hoped that up until today, not that I love the guy, but I wanted to see him do well. He just seemed confused with what he needed to focus on and forgot the most important part of being a hockey player which was playing with heart. poor guy, i don't see him taking this well, he doesn't seem like the kind of guy who would see a trade as an opportunity to start fresh to me; he'll probably get down on himself.

Regardless, it had to be done, because we are in a crunch for the playoffs, and Miller is playing 40 timse better and is an integral part of the team as we see it now, so it would be absolutely unfair and irresponsible for Leino to stay out of potential over Miller who performs.

Here's to Leino, all the best. Your presence will be missed as we can't rip on you in these forums anymore for our team's bad play.

P.S. who will we blame for our bad play after lebda is gone?

i was really pulling for him, too...and i agree there will be many here cursing this move when he starts to live up to his potential (and i truly believe he will)! its just an awful set of circumstances for the team this year, and the organization just isn't in a position to play hockey mommy to him.

anyway, since i haven't officially said it, i wish you nothing but luck, ville (unless you're playing us)!!!
