Leino to Flyers for Tollefsen and a 5th Rounder

Answered my own question.

Tollefsen being placed on waivers, if he clears he is going to Grand Rapids.

He seems like he is good depth for the D when Lebda is traded next week to make room for Lilja.

Tollefsen does have to clear waivers, and even if he gets claimed, the 5th round pick is still better than losing Ville on waivers. Pretty decent return if you ask me.

Wow I see alot of people who dont like this trade. What has Leino done to deserve more then Tollefsen and a 5th?

We got a 5th round pick for free basically and its not like TKO is some old washed up player.

We got a defenseman that is a hammer, if he's playing we have a guy we can count on to clear the crease and protect the goalie ALL the time. He's still young, 25 I think(?).

We resign him let him play a year in GR or just have him taking 6th defenseman duty next season and he will probably end up being much better then Lilja. Theyre the same style of play except Ole is tougher, hits harder, and is younger. The wings have always needed a true stay at home physical D-man and this guy could be the one. Remember he's only 25, most wings prospects are making it to the NHL aronud this age and this guy has already played over 100 NHL games. Oh and did I mention he regularly gets over 100 pims a season. A true tough defenseman.

Dunno what he's done so far, but I'll think he can still do a lot more. I hope he does well, but I know there was no way he could do that in the Red Wings anymore. Sometimes changing team is just necessary (Jussi Jokinen and Latendresse for example).

What makes people here think that Leino should've gotten the Wings a 3rd round pick?

I think had leino been a bit younger we coulda got a 3rd but he isn't really young anymore and has done nothing at all really to show potential. The guy can't skate.

I really think this trade is a steal for us.

I'm thinking Lebda will be traded when Lilja comes back. They will re-sign Meech and Tollefsen since both are RFA's to one-year deals.

Going into camp the D will be:

Lids-Raffi

Kronner-Stewie

Ericsson-______

______

And Kindl, Meech and Tollefsen will battle it out for the 6th and 7th spots on the defense.

This trade is most demonstrative of this team operating more in the short term than long term. If this were a pre-Cap year, they'd have given him another shot in camp. But you can't dump a guy off the roster who's produced in the "here and now" to take a chance on a guy who's s*** the bed all year long.

Goes to show you how strong the LGW's prognosticators are, once again...

"Leino will score at least 25-30 goals this year!!! You're crazy if you think otherwise! Screw Sammy, Hossa and Hudler!!! We've got Leino!!!"

I really think this trade is a steal for us.

He was the finnish league's top scorer and then had 9 points in 14 games last season with the Wings, along with a solid AHL season. That is not showing potential?

It's just that his value has gone downhill from the first day of this season and is at it's very lowest point right now.

I don't see how you can think it was a steal for us. What did we steal? Tollefsen that is on waivers and will either get picked up by someone else or sent to Grand Rapids. A 5th in 2011, that may one day, many years into the future, turn into a NHL player, but probably not turn into anything.

This was better than waiving him, but in no way was it a "steal". You think Holland would have made this move if we weren't forced to get rid of salary?

I think if Leino either could go back without clearing waivers or would accept playing in Grand Rapids again, he'd still be in the organization. Wish he could've worked out here, but he didn't help out his cause whatsoever to justify staying. Best of luck to him in Philly.

Pretty smart depth move.

Trade Leino, which I'm indifferent about, so we can pick up cap space = Good

Pick up a 5th round pick, which, in the Wings hands = Good

And pick up a depth d-man, that, even though, he is headed to GR = Good

This allows the Wings to move either Lebda or Meech w/o being solely dependent on Lilja making a successful comeback. Think about it, if Lebda or Meech were moved in favor of Lilja and then for whatever reason Lilja has a setback or doesn't pick his game up where he left off, we'd be stuck with Kindl as the next guy down the chart. Now, Tollefsen takes that extra depth spot as a proven (albeit, not great) NHL d-man.

P.S. - I do like Kindl and look forward to him being on the squad next season, but for a playoff run this year, I'd rather have an extra experienced NHL D-man around.

Don't forget Janik! He'd probably come up before Kindl.

Being the finnish league top scorer is good but nothing special. Its different sized ice and a way softer league. Its comparable to the WHL probably and I'm sure at whatever age Leino is he would dominate that league too. Those 14 games last season he was running on adrenaline. This year with a weaker team he showed really how bad his skating was and had no way to handle physical play.

In return we got a 5th round pick, not bad. We dumped some salary, not bad. AND we got a solid 6th defenseman who can hit and fight something our system lacks completely. He's also only 25 and played over 100 NHL games. He's proven to handle the physicallity of the league and we can very well turn him into what Lilja was last year, except more effective at the physical part.

After seeing what Leino had to offer this year and the fact that he's a little baby refusing to be sent down I'm sure Holland would've made this trade. I'm sick of all these pri madonna europeans thinking theyre gods gift to hockey that the wings have been drafting.

Either draft Euro's out of North American Juniors or draft North American.
