SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted March 19, 2010 Pitiful. This deserved a suspension, but not that much. I will always love watching hockey, but rules/enforcement of suspension and the like are such a joke in the NHL. They are consistent with being inconsistent regarding this crap. 1 55fan reacted to this
stevieisthebest 80 Report post Posted March 19, 2010 What a terrible call on this. It was a dirty hit, but Seabrook is fine. Savard may never play again. Check yourself NHL, cause this is horses***.
chrisdetroit 189 Report post Posted March 19, 2010 For those who didn't see it: http://www.youtube.c...h?v=dtSx2z_CPKQ 8 games for that?!! Are you kidding me? Has anybody ever been suspended for 8 frickin games? That is just stupid. A game or 2 ok. But 8 games? Wow
Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted March 19, 2010 Total bulls***. The Richards hit on Booth, the Gonchar on Clutterbuck and the Cooke on Savard were all blindside hits that could have killed someone or at least ended their careers. Not one of them goes punished yet when Wiz hits Seabrook, who was facing him and saw it coming, he gets 8 games? This s*** is ridiculous... I'm no ducks fan but lets be real here - this was the least dirty of all four hits I've mentioned and as far as I'm concerned Seabrook had it coming after throwing that questionable hit on Perry, and that means a lot coming from me because I hate Corey Perry. Agreed. Seabrook got hit like that because he made that dirty hit on Perry. I'm surprised that only one got suspended there. He clearly tried to give Perry brain damage... Crazy. It's like they're trying to send a message about a dozen bad hits too late. Except the NHL's past tells us that they'll f*** up at least half of the suspension calls after this. If the NHL could send a clear, consistent message with intelligent suspension choices we wouldn't be arguing about this. Prove me wrong Campbell, please prove me wrong. superstarsingh 23 Report post Posted March 19, 2010 (edited) Seabrook went after Perry with his elbow in my opinion and frankly, good on Wiz for sticking up for his teammate,Perry. Suspendable? Yep, 4 games at the most but 8? How ridiculous. Typical NHL, no consistency. I would just like to point out that Joel Quenville is an *******. The worst history of the game? You could kill him? EASY JOEL! Obviously I am biased because this happened to a Blackhawk but ultimately, no hockey fan wants to see a player get injured and I hope Seabrook is alright but his coach has issues. I also like that Wiz came out immidiately and issued and apology and stated that he thought Seabrook would play the puck (which he didn't) and he said he reached out to Seabs via a text message. Wiz did the right thing (stuck up for Perry and realized his error). Edited March 19, 2010 by superstarsingh

adamic 0 Report post Posted March 19, 2010 Not to be the guy who disagrees but it was his second offense and in the new players union agreement 8 days is mandatory, or at least the money. It was a dirty hit and it was retaliatory and seabrook never touched the puck. If it was Lindstrom you would all be calling it fair. I can't wait for the rules next year. Duck Guy 86 Report post Posted March 19, 2010 Anyone else think they just roll dice to determine if a player should be suspended and for how long? I am starting to think that... Questionable hit at 6:45PM in Anaheim... Meanwhile at the NHL headquarters... NHL officials get out a special yes/no dice to determine if the player should be suspended or not..(only no dice if it is a hit by a penguins player and a yes only dice if the hit is on a penguins player) they roll it... and if it says yes they roll 2 regular dice to determine how many games the person in question will be suspended... the said officials are paid for a day of hard work... the end.. zettie85 106 Report post Posted March 19, 2010 If you break the Cooke hit and the Wiz hit down it comes out like this. Cooke: Hit unsuspecting player. Not illegal. Shoulder to head. Not illegal. Both players moving. Room for error. Wiz: Charged. Illegal. Used elbows. Illegal. Retaliation. Not technically illegal but shows intent to injure. I'm not defending Cooke but look at the criteria and I can see why they gave Wiz 8 games and Cooke nothing. They are inconsistent but not when it comes to the Cooke hit. They showed some consistency however by not suspending Cooke when they also didn't suspend Richards.
MCleveland89 122 Report post Posted March 19, 2010 NHL.com In addressing the eight-game suspension the League handed out to Anaheim Ducks defenseman James Wisniewski earlier Thursday, Commissioner Gary Bettman attempted to clear up a couple of possible misconceptions over the latest incident involving a hit to the head.Speaking on the NHL Hour With Gary Bettman, the Commissioner said Wisniewski's hit on Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook during Wednesday night's game was "completely different" from the one delivered by Pittsburgh forward Matt Cooke earlier this month that left Boston forward Marc Savard with a Grade 2 concussion. "In that case, unlike some of these others, there was no puck possession, the hitting involved rising up to make contact with the head, and so the circumstances gave rise to being able to punish what we have previously defined -- long before this season -- as illegal acts on the ice," Bettman said. "And that's why the eight-game suspension." The Commissioner also pointed out the League has been addressing questionable hits long before the recent attention to head shots led general managers to adopt a new rule proposal targeting blind-side hits at their meetings last week. He pointed to the 20-game suspension then-Flyers forward Steve Downie received for leaving his feet to deliver a hit to the head of then-Senators forward Dean McAmmond during a September 2007 preseason game. "This is something that, 2 1/2 years ago, we sent out a DVD on," he said. "It's what led to the Downie suspension of 20 games three seasons ago, because when you do a certain series of illegal acts under certain circumstances, we've always punished severely when it warrants it." In taking calls from listeners to the program, Bettman also defended the judgment of Executive Vice President Colin Campbell after a Rangers fan suggested that if Sean Avery delivered a hit similar to Cooke's that Avery would have received a lengthy suspension based on his reputation. "As he explains what he's doing to me and the other people in Hockey Operations, there is a consistency and a sound jurisprudential way that he approaches these based on his complete knowledge of what's taking place on the ice, the players who play and everything else," Bettman said. "The notion that people would have felt good if we just punished Cooke ... the fact of the matter is, we don't make up the rules as we go along. We can't have a fair, competitive environment with integrity if we see something and we say, 'Well we don't like that so we're going to change the rules in the middle of the game.'" Take it as you will.
SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted March 19, 2010 I don't even want to hear it or read it from him as their standards of enforcing/suspensions are such a joke and so inconsistent (not giving you crap for posting this as it's the place to discuss it obviously). Thank you so much for posting on my behalf.... The league is a f***in joke and I also blame the players union, they are a bigger f***in joke than the league in that they are only concerned with MONEY. They never open their mouths about player safety, equipment or anything regarding any rule changes or how the league promotes the game. Nothing that would make the game better, just how much can we squeeze out of the fat cat owners. As far as I'm concerned the players themselves are to blame for all the dirty s*** that goes on. Putting the onus on the league to try to make the players respect themselves and others is not going to get it done..........

toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted March 19, 2010 I think Wisniewski is, in part, a victim of timing. Had Gonchar's hit happened this week, I'm sure he would have been suspended, with all the media hype going around these days. That said, Gonchar's hit was nowhere near as severe as Wisniewski's and the player did not get hurt. Without all the hype going around, you probably would have just called Gonchar's hit an elbowing penatly and be done with it. Wisniewski's is suspendable no matter how you cut it and he likely got more games because of the hype. I heard some (even on this board) calling for 10 games. Regarding Richards and Cooke....and there are others, fact of the matter is, those hits were not illegal, can't suspend. The fact that those hits were not illegal is a problem, but they have apparently made an attempt to fix that....not sure why the fix can't be immediate though. I made the comment yesterday on Seabrook's hit on Perry and I'll say it again (no that it makes any difference in the Wisniewski suspension), he barely touched Perry, he let up big time when Perry turned his back and simply touched him lightly with his gloves....Perry took a dive, was not hurt in anyway...no more than me sitting on my couch watching the game. Have a look at the reply again.
LeftWinger 5,153 Report post Posted March 19, 2010 (edited) I believe that since James grew up in and around the city of Detroit, more than likely he grew up watching and rooting for the nasty Detroit Red Wings, he deserves more than 8 games, but we will leave it at 8 and he should feel lucky that he isn't banned from ever playing in the NHL ever again. And we aren't even reffering to the hit yet, for that he will be fined, amount to be determined later...Gary Bettman, March 19th 2010 This is what he meant to say.....
