SwedeLundin77 460 Report post Posted June 28, 2010 Word on the street is that the Rangers are not going to re-sign Jody Shelley... if we do indeed pick up an enforcer type player - why not this guy? Discuss.
zettie85 106 Report post Posted June 28, 2010 We don't need an enforcer though. I would rather have a strong 4th line guy who can kill penalties and doesn't have to fight. 2 Frozen-Man and cjm502 reacted to this

13dangledangle 968 Report post Posted June 28, 2010 I hope not shelly! We dont want (well I dont) a pure fighter, like Downy who just slows up the play and when is go time they sit on the bench. I would rather Winchester over Shelly if we went that root though. Just because hes huge.
zettie85 106 Report post Posted June 28, 2010 Thats what you think but Nill and Holland have said they are looking for someone like this... If that is the case we may as well trade for Colton Orr. At least he can pound the f*** out of people.
uk_redwing 495 Report post Posted June 28, 2010 If that is the case we may as well trade for Colton Orr. At least he can pound the f*** out of people. Why do that when we can get Boogaard for cheaper? 1 GMRwings1983 reacted to this
Guest Hatethedrake! Report post Posted June 28, 2010 (edited) Sign Boogaard for the 4th line and John Scott for the 3rd d pair. All of a sudden our size quotient quadruples. LOL Unfortunately our skill quotient takes a hit but who cares. Let the bodies hit the ice! redwingfan19 293 Report post Posted June 28, 2010 Why do that when we can get Boogaard for cheaper? boogaard will be a wing. Kenny has said he wants and enforcer wether he signs for one or trades for one. Boogey and pavs are buddies and he trains with pav in russia in the summers. I can pretty much garuntee big # 24 will be patrolling the ice at the joe this coming season and I cannot wait.
newfy 695 Report post Posted June 28, 2010 Why do that when we can get Boogaard for cheaper? Yeah I agree. If we're going the heavyweight that can't really play well in free agency its gotta be the Boogey man. If its going to be a heavyweight who can play a bit, its Konopka, and if its a middleweight type of guy then I don't know who it is. Asham, Nystrom, Winchester etc are good possibilities. But yeah Boogard is tougher then Colton Orr so we might as well get him so he can pound the f*** ot of Orr as well as the guys Orr pounds the f*** out of. As for trading, why would we trade for Orr, thats stupid... 3 Original-Six, soultrain and EuroWing reacted to this
zettie85 106 Report post Posted June 28, 2010 Why do that when we can get Boogaard for cheaper? As long as we don't pay by height. We trade for Orr because Boogard would scare the children who go to the Joe.
Guest Hatethedrake! Report post Posted June 28, 2010 I'd love to sign Boogaard. I don't care if he doesn't score any goals or gets any points. His job will be to just be on the bench. If anyone gets out of line then his job is to go beat the snot out of them. I can only imagine how great Hank and Dats and every other Red Wings will feel knowing that a big monster has their back. If Kenny can sign him for less than a million then I am all for it. He'd be an instant favourite amongst Wings fans that's for sure. 1 Hockeymom1960 reacted to this

Guest Hatethedrake! Report post Posted June 28, 2010 (edited) Shelley wants 1.5? LOL Good luck with that. Laraque is the best fighter when he actually fights. But that's the problem. He does it so rarely. Boogaard seems to lose his balance quite a bit in fights but at least he does his job. He's like 6'7 270 so that is still a deterrent for other teams when it comes to running our skill guys. Edited June 28, 2010 by Hatethedrake!
blgillett 48 Report post Posted June 28, 2010 We can't afford to have a guy sit on the end of the bench and wait until we need him to fight. in this day and age you need everyone to contribute to the hockey game if that guy is able to drop the gloves that's great. Hockey13Playa 240 Report post Posted June 28, 2010 I think I'll pass on Shelley, he doesn't really interest me what so ever. Especially since he wants $1.5 million. Yeah I think not.

Jesusberg 1,256 Report post Posted June 28, 2010 1.5 million? No thanks. The most I see Holland and co. spending on any type of enforcer is 750k, and even that's pushing it.

Look, this discussion has gone on countless times now in the last couple months, and I don't want to start it again, but I will make one response to this. I understand your point, I really do; but my counter-question is this: how many skill players can we afford to have sit in IR because the cheap-shotters out there have no hesitation to take liberties with them? To be clear, I'm not saying the Wings will certainly fail without an enforcer/policeman/tough guy. I'm also not saying a goon will certainly make them instantly better. My hope is that it would help the energy and drive of the team. No one can know for sure; I'm willing to just wait to see how next year goes, however Holland and co. decide to play it. Stu in Israel 0 Report post Posted June 28, 2010 I really laughed at some of the preceding responses; you guys are great! Anyway, here's some info from Wikipedia on Boogard: Boogaard's knockout of fellow enforcer Todd Fedoruk in a fight during a game against the Anaheim Ducks helped spark debate over increasing the punishment for fighting in the NHL. During this fight, Boogaard landed a brutal punch to the cheek sending Fedoruk to the ice. As a result, Fedoruk had to undergo surgery to reconstruct his shattered cheek using titanium plates. Fedoruk and Boogaard would later become teammates in Minnesota during the 2007–08 season. Boogaard is noted for a humorous incident that happened during the Wild's prospects camp prior to the 2001–02 season. When trying to check another player on the ice, Boogaard missed him and crashed into the boards with such force that he went through a pane of glass and over the boards. Boogaard stepped back onto the ice seconds later and a replacement pane was adorned with a drawing of a person. Boogaard and his brother Aaron, who plays hockey for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League, run the Derek and Aaron Boogaard Fighting Camp in Regina, Saskatchewan, for children ages 12 to 18. This has sparked some controversy, with some people siding with the Boogaards, saying that they are teaching children how to not get hurt in a fight, and others opposing them, with the position that the Boogaards' camp is merely encouraging children to fight.
