ChitownWingsfan 54 Report post Posted July 13, 2010 http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=393625&src=149 Rookie left wing Kyle Beach finished prospects camp with three fights, two of which raised eyebrows. The 6-foot-3, 202-pound Beach twice fought 5-10, 176-pound Mathis Olimb on Sunday, leaving some to wonder why and if it was necessary. A report out of Norway on Monday claimed Olimb suffered a shoulder injury in one of the fights that will require surgery. The Blackhawks had no official comment on Olimb's injury, but general manager Stan Bowman was asked if he was concerned about Beach's maturity level. Beach, the Hawks' first-round draft pick in 2008, has a history of questionable behavior. "I don't look at it as a maturity level, I think that's part of his game," Bowman said. "That's actually what sets him apart from a lot of guys. He scored 52 goals last year, which was a great year. A guy that can do that as well as be tough to play against, you don't want him to lose that edge. 2 mjlegend and dobbles reacted to this
Hockey Convert 55 Report post Posted July 13, 2010 Fighting at a prospects camp seems a little unnecessary; then again, two of our prospects ended up injured, one requiring surgery, without any fighting reported...
martyrme19 73 Report post Posted July 13, 2010 (edited) Before anyone jumps the gun.... fighting in a prospects camp, or any camp is actually somewhat on the common side. Especially cus you always have these ****** bags who think they are top dog and they act like it. Theyre the ones who go around making dirty plays and guys will really take exception to them. What I'm more concerned about is how much he used his stick to engage the fight. That is probably how Olimb hurt his shoulder - not in the fight. That stick work is real bulls***. I mean, and they say Marty McSorely used his stick as a weapon. But to be fair, we didn't get to see what Olimb did before that video started. Also, I think Bowman is spot on with all things considered. Edited July 13, 2010 by martyrme19
stevkrause 1,247 Report post Posted July 13, 2010 Fighting at a prospects camp seems a little unnecessary; then again, two of our prospects ended up injured, one requiring surgery, without any fighting reported... Pretty common - these guys are trying to earn NHL jobs and as we all saw with the ridiculous contracts of players like Boogy and Shelley this year, toughness equates in that decision... With that said, to fight the same guy twice in the same day is pretty questionable and as the poster above me said, the stick work was pretty classless... I think Bowman is just playing it safe with the comments to the press to downplay it, but I really hope that internally, that his apparent character issues are being addressed... jeff48109 474 Report post Posted July 13, 2010 (edited) i wonder if Bowman will be singing the same tune if a higher end prospect was injured instead of Olimb, in this manner. then again, bowman is mr "We don't need to make any more trades" and "Offer sheets don't concern me". WorkingOvertime 536 Report post Posted July 13, 2010 Fights happen at camps all the time. From reading other boards, Olimb may have speared Beach earlier in the game. Also, the injury was apparentely sustained when Olimb hit the ice. I wouldn't be surprised if the coaches/management told Beach to play Olimb physical. At 24, Olimb was one of the older players at the camp, and he was also one of the smaller players (5'10, 176lbs). Therefore, they may have wanted to test his physical strength by targeting him a bit. I'm sure Bowman is singing a tune along the lines of I have a guy who potted 50 goals last season, has potential for 30 in the NHL easily and can fight most heavyweights a lot like Lucic. HAving a guy who fights at camp isn't going to have Bowman upset he's gonna be glad he's got a guy who has intensity and wants to earn an NHL job doing anything for the team. I wouldn't mind at all if some wings prospects got into it at camp.

newfy 695 Report post Posted July 13, 2010 From what I've read about him he only fights people who are smaller than he is.... Sounds more like a Lemieux style fighter. I wouldn't say thats true. He'll fight anyone really and doesn't care about size or mismatches, he fought Landon Ferraro but he also has fought guys like Frazer Mclaren, Brett Ponich, Brayden Mcnabb and Scott Ramsay who are all bigger then him. In his draft year he fought smaller guys and a few big guys but this past season he really stepped up and fought alot of ppl his size or bigger. For someone who also was a 52 goal scorer, 186 pims and a lot of fighting majors is pretty good. He might not be as tough as Lucic, he may be close, but he definitely has more of a scoring line potential then Looch as well. He would probably be Detroits best prospect if he were in our system or right in the top 3 at least.

Winger19 4 Report post Posted July 13, 2010 (edited) Having the opportunity to watch Kyle Beach while he was playing for Everett, Lethbridge and Spokane i can definitely tell you that he's a complete meathead. His on ice antics get tired after a while, and a lot of the time he puts himself ahead of the team. He's been knocked out more than once for running his mouth. He's got a reputation and needs a coach that can really reign him in. The sad part is, just reading the thread title i knew exactly who the poster was referring to. mjlegend 155 Report post Posted July 13, 2010 Yeah, you pretty much either hate Kyle Beach or you play with him on your team. Not a lot of middle ground. He also got his panties in a twist because at the U-18s in 2007, taping a "Team Ontario" sign over his jersey at the selection camp, claiming preferential treatment for those players. AFAIK, he was never invited back to a Canada camp again. The Claude Lemieux comparison is a very good one.

No wonder he fell awkwardly and hurt him self in the second fight... He didn't even want to fight! And I can't believe Bowman is backing him (Beach) up.
