Illitch officially wants Pistons

I'm wondering whether Illitch is holding off on building a new arena until he can get the Pistons under his command and possibly more donation-$ with it for a joint arena between the Pistons and the Wings.

Bingo.. That's what I think is going on.. Though I'm not sure if I like it :(

Not a whole lot of info in that article haha. Nothing really new, thats been the rumor for a while now. I understand why he wants to do it (so he can make money and build a joint arena for the pistons and Wings) but i dont think it would be a good idea because the Pistons are TERRIBLE haha. Does he know anythng about running a basketball team? Or does he just figure it would be the same as running any kind of pro sports team and just really likes the idea of moving them back to the city and getting a joint deal on the arena? I hope if he does it he can turn them around into the right direction. Should be ok since everything he touches turns to gold and is covered in pepperoni...

What's the problem with a joint arena? I don't understand that part.

These days, I don't care if they share an arena I just don't want it to have a corporate name. Or at least, have a happy medium to it like Ilitch's Palace or something like that. Anything besides that Sprint or Starbucks Arena BS.

Also, I'd love for Ilitch to be the owner of the Pistons. He'll probably shell out a little more money than Davidson did to win.

I personally think he's making a play for Palace Entertainment and all the venues associated with it. And the Palace. But yes, what is wrong with with a joint area?

It makes sense after what's-his-name left the Pistons organization to get hired by Illitch to take over the venues owned by Illitch. Now when Illitch buys the Palace and the team, what's-his-name will already be able to take care of that area. Can anyone help me figure out the dudes name? He was basically one of the reasons the Pistons were one of the top money-making teams.

I like the idea of pistons back to Detroit, and under Ilitch. Hate the shared stadiums idea though. Seems the shared stadiums people are always complaining about ice quality.

Maybe he'll go for the Disney model. Miramax and Pixar are owned by Disney, but are operationally separate entities. Would make sense- splitting an arena makes it so it's a mediocre NHL and NBA arena, instead of having 2 good ones.

Are you thinking of Tom Wilson?

same goes for me....THE WINGS AND PISTONS SHOULD NOT SHARE AN ARENA!!!!!!

What do you suppose they do then? Keep the Pistons in AH? They can't build 2 new downtown arenas

I am betting on The Delta Centre.... Now that Delta Airlines is the largest airline in the world and Detroit is one of it's largest hubs, the marriage makes sense... Now I know that the Delta CentER used to be what the Utah Jazz called their home, they have since changed it and if you reverse the ER to RE in the word CENTER to CENTRE it gives it that Canadian NHL feel to it. Plus it just looks cooler!

While I would rather have separate arenas for both the Pistons and the Red Wings, it seems more logical economically for them to share a new arena downtown. All I really want is for the Red Wings to have a modern-ish arena to play in because while the nostalgic value of the Joe will be sad to have to let go of, our boys really need a new place to play, and more importantly, the fans need to be able to fully enjoy the experience of a game.

I just still don't really like the idea of seeing Pistons s*** all over a hockey arena.

Sure they can. Ilitch can promise big $ for downtown development to increase tax base for downtown Detroit to the City Council. Give each of the Detroit Planning Member a free Little Caesar franchise and *poof*. Two new stadiums.

So will this mean the Red Wings are moving to the Palace?

Why I would LOVE this from a drive stand point, I'm not sure even someone as good as Al can keep the ice in a shared arena as good as it should be for the Wings.

I think it sets the table for a joint arena downtown, and it would make it more likely that the Wings would play at the Palace for a few years while the new arena is built. I'm just hoping for an old school style arena.

Weren't the Tigers and the Wings in the toilet when Illitch bought the teams? It's not like he needs a whole ton of knowledge as an owner, hire the right people and throw money at it. Like you said, he's always breeding success - so it can't hurt.

I don't ever want to see the Wings play in a shared building. Ever.

I would rather they play in the Joe for the next 300 years, at least the seating is decent and the ice is fast.

I could care less about the pistons. The NBA is just one small step above professional wrestling after the Ref controversy and LeBron-Gate.

I would like a pettion to urge my favourite pizza mogul to leave the Wings in a seperate building. Let him build a new palace next to his wifes casino, and let the Wings only play there one season to fix the Joe in THE SAME SPOT!!!

Seriously, Riverfront beats all and I love the Joe. Can't we just fix the greatest rink up?

Oh and I don't know how many of you have ever been to a basketball/hockey arena to watch a hockey game....

Every one of these arenas are designed to watch a basketball game, not a hockey game. I hate how far away the game feels, not at all an intimate setting.

Well, for one, it won't have a hockey feel. Instead of all the awesome Wings stuff at the Joe, it'll have to be shared with the Pistons, would it not?

Ugh, I hope he comes to the conclusion that the NBA isn't worth it. That league is a joke and I wish it would just go away.

Too bad it looks like it won't. Even worse, these days it looks like Bettman is starting to adopt some NBA methods to his "rules".
