They were sooooo close. Then, Regier's failed vision took over and the rest has been a virtual nightmare.

Regier could have kept Briere and let Vanek go for the FOUR (!!!!!) lottery picks he would have gotten from the bottom-feeding Oilers.

Vanek is good, but Briere plus four extremely high picks is better. Way better. That's a gaffe that no GM should never come out of with his job intact.

From Buffalo News :

All that's left is the transfer of cash from one billionaire to another. Once that is complete, the Buffalo Sabres can say hello to their new owner. The other details have been finalized.

The National Hockey League board of governors approved the sale of the Sabres to Terry Pegula on Friday, The Buffalo News has learned. Once the financial details of the $189 million sale are done, Pegula will take over control of the hockey team from B. Thomas Golisano.

Totally speculation, but there are rumors out here that a group is looking to bring a NHL team to Seattle. Of course they'd need to build a stadium, but Key Arena would probably work until then (it was an NBA facility, after all).

Just what I've heard.

Key arena needs to be severely renovated or replaced. Wikipedia pegs their Ice Hockey cap at 15,177

Seattle paid for Qwest Field and Safeco field, but when it came time to upgrade the arena (which operates on its own income) dug their feet in.

I'm still pulling for Winnipeg, Hamilton, or Quebec City. KC would be nice, but the town is still stuck in teh 1970s.

From the people form Seattle that I've talked to, there is no way Seattle could support an NHL franchise.

Anyone seen the price of Sabres tickets for when the Wings are there Feb 26th? I'm only about 40 minutes from Buffalo so was thinking of going to see the game. Tickets START at $60! Screw that!

Oh, speaking of relocation, I'm hearing rumors people think the Thrashers are going to be in Winnipeg next year.

Why not? Their soccer team does really well. :D

Actually, every T-Birds game I've gone to, has been packed. But you're probably correct. Though, the makeup of people is of very little difference than it is in Vancouver. The only difference being that Vancouver is in Canada. In plain english, they are both a melting pot of people from all over the world. Very,... Metropolitan.

Granted I've only lived out here for 6 years or so, but from what I can tell, people in Seattle just like sports in general, so I have no idea why a hockey team wouldn't work.

Hell, our box lacrosse team regularly sells out (and has a devoted following) at $25-100 a ticket for an 8,500 seat arena, and that's a complete niche sport.

I can 100% guarantee that it would at the very least be more popular than hockey is in the south, though that may not be enough to get us a team.

If you sell the history of hockey in Seattle (i.e. the first American Stanley Cup) and promote it enough, you'll get droves of fans like the Sounders have.

Just my impression, having grown up in Chicago and moving out here.

Hopefully Buffalo and NJD move to westernish Canada so we are guaranteed to be in the Eastern Conference. New York doesn't need 4 teams. yes, i consider Newark part of New York since they sound identical.

Part of the search process for a suitable buyer was that Mr. Golisano wanted to find an new owner who would assure him that he had no intention of moving the Sabres; Mr. Pegula assured him of that. At an earlier press conference, Mr. Golisano alluded to an interested buyer (without giving his name), who offered more than the offer he finally accepted, but also said he intended to move the team. Mr. Golisano turned down the offer and everyone knows that that offer came from...

There's no reason to move the Sabres. Despite a bad economy and declining population, it's in a great spot right across the river from hockey crazed Ontario, and only an hour from the horribly run Maple Leafs.

Hey, Phoenix! This is how it's done.

And no one would be more thrilled than I to see the Wings back in the West, but Bettman will proclaim DRW Day before that ever happens. We're one of the major components of revenue for his expansion teams. Take us out of the West and Phoenix for sure is in deep doodoo.

Yea I don't see the Wings ever moving East, we make to much money for the West. I actually like the Western Conference better though.

Both Buf and NJD have too good of a fanbase to be subject to a move IMO

Yea the Devils aren't going anywhere either. They build that new arena, and with the Nets moving to Brooklyn in the next couple years, the new arena will be empty.

Guest Howard He Do It?!

I wouldn't want the Sabres to move. Keep the Sabres and the Rangers and export those low life Islanders. Would anyone miss them?

From Buffalo News :

...

"The Buffalo Sabres' reason for existence is to win the Stanley Cup," the 59-year-old said. "We will aspire to be the best in the league at finding, developing and keeping players in the Buffalo Sabres family."

Pegula said starting today there will be no financial mandates on the hockey team, which has a history of monetary restraints. He promised to increase the scouting and player development departments to achieve his goal of winning the Cup.

...

...

"If I want to make some money, I'll go drill a gas well," said Pegula, who became a billionaire in the natural gas market. "We're not in this to save money."

...

This is the way it should have been since 1998-99, but it hasn't been.
