Vanek is good, but Briere plus four extremely high picks is better. Way better. That's a gaffe that no GM should never come out of with his job intact. Wikipedia pegs their Ice Hockey cap at 15,177 Seattle paid for Qwest Field and Safeco field, but when it came time to upgrade the arena (which operates on its own income) dug their feet in. I'm only about 40 minutes from Buffalo so was thinking of going to see the game. Tickets START at $60! Screw that! Their soccer team does really well. Actually, every T-Birds game I've gone to, has been packed. But you're probably correct. Though, the makeup of people is of very little difference than it is in Vancouver. The only difference being that Vancouver is in Canada. Granted I've only lived out here for 6 years or so, but from what I can tell, people in Seattle just like sports in general, so I have no idea why a hockey team wouldn't work. Hell, our box lacrosse team regularly sells out (and has a devoted following) at $25-100 a ticket for an 8,500 seat arena, and that's a complete niche sport. I can 100% guarantee that it would at the very least be more popular than hockey is in the south, though that may not be enough to get us a team. If you sell the history of hockey in Seattle (i.e. the first American Stanley Cup) and promote it enough, you'll get droves of fans like the Sounders have. Part of the search process for a suitable buyer was that Mr. Golisano wanted to find an new owner who would assure him that he had no intention of moving the Sabres; Mr. Pegula assured him of that. At an earlier press conference, Mr. Golisano alluded to an interested buyer (without giving his name), who offered more than the offer he finally accepted, but also said he intended to move the team. Despite a bad economy and declining population, it's in a great spot right across the river from hockey crazed Ontario, and only an hour from the horribly run Maple Leafs.
