I gladly take Ovechkin and his $9.5M....

also, regarding Hudler, if push came to shove they could send him down and someone would surely pick him up for free? Wouldn't they? Holland could always loan him to a Euro team ala Chicago...

Wait... You'd take OV at 9.5mil over Dats at 6.7 and/or Zata at 6mil?

wait, what? Huh? Wait! First I voted for the war, then I voted against it....what?

No, I was responding to someone saying that nobody on the Wings should make more than Dats/Zetts or Lids... and what I said was if Ovechkin wanted to sign with the Wings at his current rate of $9.5M, I wouldn't turn him a way just because he would make more than Dats/Zetts/Lids...

Ohhhhhh, that makes more sense, except I'd turn him down since that's nearly 1/6th of the team's cap! unless they took Hudler off our hands, since that'd make it more of a 6.5 cap hit and it would be less than Datsyuks :P

He'd be a great signing, except he'd get a hell of a lot more somewhere else. Plus, we are fine offensively.

B Rad isn't coming to Detroit.

Babcock said we need a top 6 forward!!

I agree that we need a scoring winger, not another play-making center...but Richards kind of gives us that, in allowing Hank to play on Pav's wing.

If he wanted to be a part of our organization, he'd have to take a discount...6-7m.

Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Holmstrom

Franzen-Richards-Bertuzzi

Hudler-Filppula-Cleary

Mursak-Helm-Abdelkader

I like the looks of that.

And this guy thought the world was ending a couple weeks ago:

Sometimes people just say thing to say things. Case in point, a professional athlete always says they'd love to re-sign in a place they are miserable at to come out looking good. A coach will always say they need a top six forward and a top 4 DMan.

We finished 4th in scoring during the post season season and second in the regular season. We are fine offensively.I'm also banking on the fact that Hudler can't possibly suck as bad as he did last season for this coming season lol. Put all that cap space in defense and let's win another 'ship?

I have that wierd feeling like Kenny is going to put in a decent effort here. If not, I really wouldn't care, but if we can pull a Hossa-esque moves im all for it. If Richards were here, I'd hope that Zetterberg would focus more on scoring 40 goals again and less on playmaking. We need bonafide goal scorers and if Brad and Pavel could be the playmakers to Hank and Johan's finishing abilities, our offense would be scary. With Raffi gone and Nick gone soon, we will probably spend the rest of our free space on defenseman and appropriately so. Here's my ideas and first go around with Capgeek...

Note: Cap should be at least $62 mill next year. Richards takes Datsyuk's salary after Holland tells him he can only make more than Pavel if he can take the puck from him. Richards signs before ever trying. We sign a hometown, offensive defenseman. Osgood stays because Holland adopts him as his son. Ericsson stays because he knows his flaws would be exploited elsewhere. We don't sign a tough guy because size is our enemy and strength is weakness. Hudler disappears, like last summer and most of his NHL shifts.

CAPGEEK.COM CAP CALCULATOR

FORWARDS

Henrik Zetterberg ($6.083m) / Brad Richards ($6.700m) / Tomas Holmstrom ($1.875m)

Daniel Cleary ($2.800m) / Pavel Datsyuk ($6.700m) / Johan Franzen ($3.954m)

Justin Abdelkader ($0.787m) / Valtteri Filppula ($3.000m) / Todd Bertuzzi ($1.937m)

Jan Mursak ($0.550m) / Darren Helm ($0.912m) / Patrick Eaves ($1.500m)

Cory Emmerton ($0.533m) / Kris Draper ($0.800m)

DEFENSEMEN

Nicklas Lidstrom ($5.000m) / Niklas Kronwall ($3.000m)

Brad Stuart ($3.750m) / James Wisniewski ($4.500m) or Andy Greene ($3.5-$4)

Jonathan Ericsson ($1.700m) / Jakub Kindl ($0.883m)

Brendan Smith ($0.875m)

GOALTENDERS

Jimmy Howard ($2.250m) / Chris Osgood ($1.000m)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)

(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)

SALARY CAP: $59,400,000; CAP PAYROLL: $61,092,044; BONUSES: $0

CAP SPACE (23-man roster): -$1,692,044

Disclaimer: This is all under the not so likely assumption that we would actually sign Brad Richards. I highly doubt its going to happen. Most likely (if our needs are 2 defenseman, a backup goalie, and a top 9 forward) we'll end up with a Ruslan Salei clone, Tomas Kaberle (Schnieder was terrible and he played here!), Osgood (duh!), and Dale Hawerchuck (since Modano is probably done).

People keep saying NYR, but unless they unload Gaborik, I don't see how they could fit him under the cap. They have a bunch of other free agents to sign like Callahan and Dubinsky. They currently have just 8 forwards and 3 defensemen under contract for next year and $18 mil of cap space. That Drury contract is going to haunt them for awhile.

Buyouts of Drury and Wolski (which has already been speculated) would give them ample room to both sign all the people they want to keep, filler, and overpay for Richards.

Would love to see Richards in uniform but highly doubtful. Anything's possible I suppose. Reasonable destinations would probably be NYR, LA and TB. Maybe Toronto or Carolina as long shots? :D

Carolina is a possibility because of his involvement with Karmanos and the Plymouth Whalers... The more I look at it, the more I'd rather have two 20-30 goal scorers for a combined $6M or less than to throw $9+ at Richards...but...

Hudler for Wolski? At the very least it would improve our shootout record. Speaking of shootout specialists, isn't Jussi Jokinen a FA too, what about him as a top 6 scoring winger?

Actually neither, but I admit I haven't been reading all of the UFA threads, since half of them were cleverly veiled as blueadams line threads.

He would be worth signing IMO. I don't care if he is the highest paid player on the team he would be worth getting.

This is virtually the same thing as was said about him at the trade deadline in 2008. It was wrong then, and it's wrong now.

Downie - Stamkos - St. Louis

Lecavalier - Richards - Malone

That pretty much needs to happen. And if they have to trade Malone to make it work cap-wise, they can play Purcell there.

Yeah, I said before that he would find his way back thanks to Stevie...

Though I don't think they should keep Vinnie.

I say they trade Lecavalier to MTL for Cammalari and some other parts of a trade (and really shoot for the moon), as we all know they would trade anything for Vinny.

How about this to start....

need sniper not another play maker

Thehockeynews:

ASSETS: Has incredible imagination with the puck and excellent playmaking ability. Likes to shoot the puck often when playing the point on the power play. Is a leader by example.

FLAWS: Isn't big or physical, so he can wear down against bigger opposing centers. His defensive game has regressed over time.

CAREER POTENTIAL: Intelligent scoring center.

Only two seasons with less than 20 goals. Last year netted 28.

220 Career goals, 716 pts in 772 games.

He is a sniper, he has a hell of a shot.

If any player should be traded it would be Filppula, it would be theoretically his spot Richards would take, Flip can be easily moved for prospects and picks without other teams trying to send back cap space, and if front loaded signing Richards would be very possible while still allowing Detroit space to pick up a middle tier Defenseman or two.

Probably won't happen, but they won't trade Hudler, sorry guys, his worth is low, teams would want send a player back that would take up cap space, so hes the worst player try to get cap relief from.

First things first, anybody that thinks Lidstrom won't be the highest paid player on the team next year is HIGH. He is going to win the FREAKING NORRIS TROPHY. He will get 7.25 mil for next year. Count on it. Penciling him in at any less is pure short-sightedness.

And if you think Brad Richards is going to come here and get more than Lidstrom, you're HIGH as well.

6 years, 42 million. That would be best case scenario.

I'd be shocked if Lidstrom took more than 6mil next season. now way he wants a raise, he's not that type of person.

Don't need him. Waste of cap. Not fair to overpay for him with dats making almost 2 mill less than he will fetch.

Damn you!!!! That's my youtube video I like playing!!!! Lol.
