First things first, anybody that thinks Lidstrom won't be the highest paid player on the team next year is HIGH. He is going to win the FREAKING NORRIS TROPHY. He will get 7.25 mil for next year. Count on it. Penciling him in at any less is pure short-sightedness.

And if you think Brad Richards is going to come here and get more than Lidstrom, you're HIGH as well.

6 years, 42 million. That would be best case scenario.

He wasn't the highest paid player last year. Sorry. Please some day perform research before you talk.

Lidstrom had just captained the Wings to the Cup, and won his third straight Norris trophy in 2008. And he took a pay cut of $150k per year over two years. Then in 2010, he took another cut of $1.25m. Even though he was a Norris finalist.

So now that he is the likely winner, you think he'll demand a huge raise?

Thehockeynews:

ASSETS: Has incredible imagination with the puck and excellent playmaking ability. Likes to shoot the puck often when playing the point on the power play. Is a leader by example.

FLAWS: Isn't big or physical, so he can wear down against bigger opposing centers. His defensive game has regressed over time.

CAREER POTENTIAL: Intelligent scoring center.

Only two seasons with less than 20 goals. Last year netted 28.

220 Career goals, 716 pts in 772 games.

He is a sniper, he has a hell of a shot.

What THN says is far less important than what Richards actually does. You do realize that those profiles are written and then left inert for years, right? TSN's profile of Cleary, for example, said for years that he lacked heart and motivation (which hadn't been true since the pre-lockout days).

Richards is a passing center.

if your going to spend a s*** ton of money on a forward, let it be parise. I cant see how NJ is going to come up with 6 mil to keep him next season

My thoughts are similar...even though I believe it is possible to sign Richards, there are others out there that are just as good that Holland could throw money at. That is the reason I used Crosby and Ovechkin as a comparison, while Richards is one of the best in the league, there is no way he is better than Crosby (pre-concussion) and shouldn't (but just might) be making more money than him, or Ovechkin...

The only thing is Parise is a RFA, so I don not think Holland will be offering up a contract with the potential of losing multiple draft picks. He would be awesome here, but it's just something Holland does not do... I look at Jersey and wonder how they are gonna do it too. They only have $7M right now, and with the rumored increase, would have about $10.3ish. They need 5-6 more players including Parise...

hmmm now you got me thinking. If we did sign richards, we would have the ability to trade flip, he's a higher end player that could be used in a package deal for bogosian, but is a worse version of richards. hudler can be used to gain a pick or two in the draft and get us some cap space. I still would like to see kenny try and get jeff carter off philly just cause hes a right handed center that would fit great on our second line.

Yeah, I said before that he would find his way back thanks to Stevie...

Though I don't think they should keep Vinnie.

I say they trade Lecavalier to MTL for Cammalari and some other parts of a trade (and really shoot for the moon), as we all know they would trade anything for Vinny.

The Lightning trading away Vinny would be like the Wings trading away Nick. Lecavalier is going to retire as a Bolt and he still is having 50+ point seasons.

Hudler was .51 in P/G last year, which puts him at a similar scoring pace to many forwards making as much or more money with him. Even with his obvious deficiencies, some offensively needy team would take him in a trade (even it were for a relatively cheap price).

I personally think it's better to see what he does next year than take the cheap deal we'd probably get for him; the potential value of his offense is higher than what people would offer right now. The only way I'd take the cheap deal is if I had a need to clear the cap space (and only after I'm sure I had contracts locked up that would make this necessary, not on the hope that I might be able to grab some FA that may or may not sign here)

I agree with this 100%. I say keep him and see if things improve this season.

The thing is, and i know its 99.99999% fact that he wont be a Red Wing next year, BUT Holland does have enough cash next year to offer him a $9M contract.

I didnt even read the rest, I started crying and ran out of the room.....

The difference is that Vinny isn't a good leader, and doesn't play up to the level he can in many circumstances. Richards to me is not as good as a goal scorer as Vinny, but is better in every other regard.

MTL wants him so bad you could basically rip them off. Honestly I think only one player on that roster is untouchable if Vinny is on the table.

Parise is one of the few players where a "Hudler-plus" trade actually makes sense for the Wings. New Jersey gets a skilled offensive forward for under three million, Detroit gets a high-end two-way forward. There are probably picks involves, at least one first-rounder. Hudler's skill set complements Kovalchuk very well. Kovalchuk provides a top end finisher who could take advantage of Jiri's playmaking skill; see: Savard/Kovalchuk. Stick Zajac in between them and that's a damn good first line. Tedenby and Elias flank Zubrus on line two, and Rolston centers the third line with Clarkson and Palmieri.

The big thing is, New Jersey will soon lose their headline goaltender, and there's no guarantee of a starter. So even though Brodeur isn't top-end anymore, they probably require a top-end prospect coming back. So we're looking at no less than Hudler and at least one 1st, plus McCollum/Larsson. Smith or Kindl may have to be included as well. All for Parise and maybe one or two low picks. The deal probably ends up helping both teams out pretty well.

Parise is RFA...

It would require a good trade. I would rather get the big UFA.

I also like the idea of maybe going after a high draft pick this year.

Wonder what it would take to get Larsson in the draft?

First this year, next year, Flip, Hudler and a second?

Then if you sign Richards you could just play Kindl, Smith, and Larsson to replace Rus, E, and Raf.

lol I know... but it is fun to dream.

They can have Hudler and McCollum, I don't think we have the luxury to trade any defensive prospects away though... I think a first would have to be included as well...

I think that Holland thinks their picks are worth more than players, which this year should not be the case. Go after one last cup for Lids!

Oh, so he won't get that much? He is already at $7.8M so $9M isn't out of the ballpark... and Holland does have that much and more to offer him...wipe your tears and come back...

Then I will take Dubinsky

And you will quite literally have to do so in the physical sense to get him from them.

No.

The team with the pick for Larsson wouldn't want a 2nd liner, an overpaid guy and a bunch of late round picks, they'd want real high end talent right now. Kronwall, Pulkinnen, Tatar, and Smith. Don't like it? That's why trades for such high picks typically don't happen.

He doesnt seem to understand that by cap hit Dats was the highest paid player, and I believe by actual salary Z was also paid more than him.

Prices for players are higher than they were a few years ago, I'm not so sure the "Lidstrom limit" still applies. You're just not going to get amazing talent if you impose an artificial limit like that on your team. I mean, when Lidstrom retires, are we not allowed to sign anyone for more money than Datsyuk and Zetterberg? Their contracts were signed years ago and were low even for then.

Richards looking for $64M over 8 years.

It’s believed the New York Rangers, Los Angeles Kings, Detroit Red Wings and the Maple Leafs — all big-market, big-money teams with holes to fill — are all interested in the native of Prince Edward Island.

Best bet for the wings to swing this would be to trade Flip, for pick (him plus our first for a pick around 12-16) or a defense prospect. The reason this is is because with Helm's emergence in the past couple seasons and Flip not having his break out season yet, hes the most movable piece that would get the Wings what they would need in the future while also giving them cap room.

I don't see LA going after Richards, because Doughty will be their #1 priority and hes going to get a hefty raise.
