Wish that injuries now always meant that you are healthy late in the season, but this is not the case always unfortunately.

and so it begins....

Bad news about Cleary:

Forward Danny Cleary did practice, albeit wearing a gray sweater, which signifies that no contact allowed. Cleary has an upper-body injury that he said will need six to eight weeks to heal, but he remains hopeful that he can play through the pain and be ready for the Oct. 7 home opener against Ottawa.

Edit: The article also mentions Commodore and Datsyuk being injured, although neither injury seems particularly serious.

Am I reading it right that it would require 6-8 WEEKS to completely heal? What is the reason then to play throgh pain in the beginning of the season?

Cleary is already getting an early hop on being injured for another season! I'm guessing another 20+ games this year as well. Worst move by Ken Holland ever, I've been saying it for the past two years. A lot of haters when I first started saying that Cleary isn't worth his money... I'm sure you'll all agree by the end of the year. Please god cut Hudler and let Brunnstrom take his spot.

While I think they mean it might take him six to eight weeks to play at 100%, I don't see anything wrong with him playing at 80-90% for a week or two. I'm sure the Wings won't put him in unless he's well enough to play at the level he needs to. I don't doubt for a moment if there's even a sliver of doubt they'll keep him sat. They aren't gonna put him out at 40% or anything silly. He's an asset, they want him on the ice producing. Honestly, he's probably too stubborn to hear a no. He plans on playing so the Wings are gonna let him if he is up to it.

Cleary is such a scrub. We should definitely part ways with the second leading goal scorer on the team.

Why would anyone agree with you now anyways? He's been worth the money for the two years you have been claiming he isn't, so I can't see this season being any different.

Yeah, actually we should Mr. Sarcasm. He misses at least 1/4th the season EVERY year. He's getting older, NOT a strong skater, and people praise him for his 'gritty play'. LMAO I've never seen him come off the boards with the puck. Hell, most of his goals come from infront of the net, or off tips. Tell me we can't find another player to do that?? He's grossly overpaid for how often he plays. I said last year... Backes made less money than Cleary. Get off his jockstrap.

That's hardly a comparable situation. Backes' first full season in the league was 2007-2008 and he was still on the last year of his deal this past season. Backes parlayed a couple of 30-goal seasons into a bigger deal. You are also comparing probably the best forward on a pretty deep team up front to maybe the 4th or 5th best forward on the Red Wings.

Also, your claim Cleary misses 1/4th of the season EVERY year couldn't be further from the truth. Since joining the Red Wings, Cleary has never played fewer than 63 games, so in fact he has actually never missed 1/4th of the season in ANY year. Like Mickey says, don't let the facts get in the way of a good story. Everyone on the team is getting older -- should we trade Franzen or Zetterberg too since both of them have missed time? I'll take a guy that can score 26 goals, play on any line, is strong defensively and works his ass off every single shift. Then again, I would need to get off his jockstrap and look at it with your objectivity instead.

Yeah, no need for any Cleary hate.

For what he brings to the team he is more than worth his cap hit. Can't even believe someone could see it any other way.

His scoring alone is worth is 3mil/year, not to mention everything else he brings on the defensive side of the game. Not to mention that he can play on any line in any situation. He'll never be a superstar but is everything we need.

You're going to have a hard time convincing the majority on here about Cleary.

Good luck with that.

Danny Cleary skated hard today, showing no signs of the upper-body injury that will keep him for the weekend. Cleary said the injury might affect him for six weeks but that he could be ready for the regular season opener, Oct. 7 against Ottawa at home.

"Cleary looks fine, but won't be playing this weekend,'' Babcock said. "You can't practice the way Cleary practiced today with him not be ready for opening night.''

Cleary said it's not a concussion. It happened in last Friday's preseason game against Philadelphia but is not related to the cut he received on his chin after colliding with Andreas Lilja's helmet.

Probably a misunderstanding, Cleary's deal looks to be days, not weeks. As well as all other injuries right now. Short-term pretty much, hopefully staying that way.

In reference to Danny Cleary. I remeber us in the 1998 finals. We played against Capitals.... Their coach once said "there is always not enough players like Bellows and Tikkanen". I could agree. We just need Dats Zetter Lidstrom and the rest of the line-ip full of Danny-clone and then the Cup is ours...
