RedBengals 27 Report post Posted October 3, 2011 What are people's predictions for the season? I think we will finish solidly at the top of our division and make a decent playoff run. However, with age becoming a factor I see injuries mounting up and by the end of the season the grind might be too much. You all can probably predict better than I can, I'm curious. Give any predictions you want. Record? Top scorer/points? Injuries?

RedBengals 27 Report post Posted October 4, 2011 I think the most important part of the season is winning our division. It's our last year in the West (Hopefully) so we need to go out on top before our move East to tougher territory. That said, I see the Wings going to the playoffs and possibly the round of eight, but injuries and the grind I think could be too much for our older team to handle. Age does matter, and it seems like we'll have trouble staying healthy.
ACallToArms 270 Report post Posted October 4, 2011 I don't have any predictions, just hopes. -Hope Franzen produces more this year. -Hope we can stave off the injuries for a change. -Hope to see a breakout year from some of the newer guys like Helm. The Wings are in the middle of a transition, the older guys are slowly being phased out, while the newer guys need to step up to fill roles. I would be very happy to see a deep playoff run this year, but because of this I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't.

Z and D for the C 712 Report post Posted October 4, 2011 Realistically speaking, if the Wings make the Western finals I'll be happy. If players step up and play like they should (thinking Franzen, Filppula) we could have a powerhouse offense but I don't think our defense is going to be good enough to go further, barring a big mid-season trade. It's our last year in the West (Hopefully) so we need to go out on top before our move East to tougher territory. Uh, if we move East next year I think you can guarantee a Stanley Cup finals visit... 2 xtrememachine1 and Rick D reacted to this

RedBengals 27 Report post Posted October 4, 2011 I really want the Wings to win the Stanley Cup just like I do every year, I just worry we might be too old of a team to make the grind. That said, I would really like all the old hands to get the cup once more before they start retiring.

That said, I would really like all the old hands to get the cup once more before they start retiring. I could be wrong, but this team is the youngest it has been in about 20 years. Have no worries about the grind. This could very well be the last Cup chance for Holmstrom and Lidstrom (the last remaining players from the "Golden Years" ) They are the oldest guys on the team as well (41 & 38) Everyone else is 35 and under. No longer can ANYONE say that the Wings are too old to compete. (not that that stopped them any other time when they were the oldest team in the league! Everyone is just jealous!) Interesting that someone brought up Shane Doan. I think he could be an X-Factor in securing the Wings their 12Th Stanley Cup. I say why wait until the trade deadline? Make the deal somewhere around December or beginning of the New Year. I am fairly sure he would waive his NMC to come here and possibly have his only shot at winning a Cup. He sure as hell ain't gonna win one in Phoenix. He has given so much of himself to the Coyotes organization, it's time they gave back and traded him to a contender. I prefer that be Detroit and as soon as possible so he can "gel" with the team before the playoffs. I don't know who would be dealt, but Doan would be wondrous here. I do like the idea of Alfredsson too, but he is not much of a rental with another whole year left on his contract, plus he is 38 compared to Doan being 34. Doan could actually be re-signed for a few years if they wanted. They'd have to unload some big salary to acquire both.

But I agree, we are a much younger team without Draper and Ozzie and with the loss of Maltby last year as well. We are definitely making a youth movement (for a Red Wings team that is). We have 13 players 27 or younger on this team, how in the world is that an old team? They'd have to unload some big salary to acquire both. Like Hudler?
