For him it will always be about making sure he has enough shutout level nights to outweigh his terrible nights. He's a wildcard goalie. His one loss he was pulled after 4 ga, but other than that he's finished every game. Four games with 2,1,0 ga and four with 3 or 4 ga. So i do see your point how his performances fluctuate overall. He's being used as part of a tandem with Reimer it seems..same as last year with McIllenney. That's the best way to use him if you can. Howard is doing alright this year, but Bernier has been bad. He has not impressed since he got to Detroit, save for some games. And he's not good enough to split games on a bad team, which is what Blash seems to be doing this year so far. Holtby would be a good stopgap, while we're waiting for (hopefully) Larsson / Eliasson / Petruzzelli to emerge as a viable NHL starter. However, I wouldn't want to pay him too much for too long, and I have a feeling he'll either be staying in Washington or looking for big money that will bring him into retirement... Unless they're getting a higher end asset back, which I wouldn't be willing to do. Both Holtby and Howard are pending UFA's. I'm sure they'd just assume keep the better goalie, for insurance / possible playoff run, unless they're adding a quality asset. I'd be okay with letting Howard walk after this season, and signing Holtby, but again, only if we can sign him to a reasonable contract.
