Jimmy Howard

  • .897 - average
  • .900 - average
  • .861 - below average
  • .900 - average

For all those rekindling their Mrazek fanboy love; he's still a bi-polar manic coin toss, and Howard is still a model of consistency.

I'll bite on the Mrazek topic. Seems like he's started the season just fine

Refer to my post on Monday at 10 AM one page back

On average his stats look good this years so far, definitely. But just like him, his performances are all over the place still. Some night he's saving 70% of shots, others he has shutouts. For him it will always be about making sure he has enough shutout level nights to outweigh his terrible nights.

He's a wildcard goalie. If you wanna be fast fast and loose and ride that gamble he's the goalie for you. I just don't think a team like the Red Wings would ever tolerate this kind of goalie at the end of the day though. We like our Osgoods and Howards.

True. But with two of his "bad" outing wins, he faced low shot totals. 13sa/3a is .769 sv%, he also had 2ga on 19 shots. His one loss he was pulled after 4 ga, but other than that he's finished every game. Four games with 2,1,0 ga and four with 3 or 4 ga. So i do see your point how his performances fluctuate overall. He's being used as part of a tandem with Reimer it seems..same as last year with McIllenney. That's the best way to use him if you can.

Howard is doing alright this year, but Bernier has been bad. He has not impressed since he got to Detroit, save for some games. And he's not good enough to split games on a bad team, which is what Blash seems to be doing this year so far. Could be that he knows playoffs aren't happening so he's not burning Howard out. Maybe he'll be a deadline trade.

Samsonov is outplaying Holtby by a pretty good margin so far

Holtby is UFA this year...

Holtby would be a good stopgap, while we're waiting for (hopefully) Larsson / Eliasson / Petruzzelli to emerge as a viable NHL starter. However, I wouldn't want to pay him too much for too long, and I have a feeling he'll either be staying in Washington or looking for big money that will bring him into retirement...

Well if this continues and Samsonov wins the job he won't exactly be in a great position to ask for money....

Think about this: Howard Holtby swap, and we send something else back to WAS to sweeten the pot like Helm or picks or something.

Caps get something for Holtby, plus a backup for Sammy

We get our goalie for the next 5 years or so

Love this idea. Don’t see it happening.

Makes sense from a Red Wings perspective, but I don't see how it makes much sense from the Caps perspective. Unless they're getting a higher end asset back, which I wouldn't be willing to do. Both Holtby and Howard are pending UFA's. I'm sure they'd just assume keep the better goalie, for insurance / possible playoff run, unless they're adding a quality asset.

I'd be okay with letting Howard walk after this season, and signing Holtby, but again, only if we can sign him to a reasonable contract. I'm sure there will be several teams going after him though, and with the state the Red Wings are currently in / the s*** that Howard has gone through, I don't see him having much interest...

Top prospect for a 30 year old, pending UFA... Sure, why not...

Zadina is going to be lucky to be a Nyquist/Tatar level guy. Lucky. We need a decent goalie for the mid-term if we have a prayer of being a real team. Larsson ain’t our savior in the next 5 years.

LOL

Are you seriously saying that you would make that trade?

LOL

That trade would be Filip Forsberg for Martin Erat level bad...

Oh if he’s a UFA nah, but he’d be an upgrade over our s***suation in net. And Zadina is washed up. Cut him loose already.
