Huskins to Flyers for conditional 7th rd pick (2014)

Ovechkin is a one-trick pony. He gets most of his goals from being left unopened to unleash that cannon of his either in the zone or on the rush. Datsyuk and Zetterberg are far more versatile.

This is an excellent article on the subject.

He is not at all good defensively, and his ability to score has always depended in moderate part upon being able to quickly go on the rush from the defensive zone. That does not lend itself to defensive play.

With Backstrom feeding him, there's no reason why he shouldn't be able to score a lot.

I agree with the article, and it's exactly what I said above. Cover Ovechkin to the exclusion of anyone else. If they can beat you, fine, but that team doesn't have enough talent to do it. If there were any other game changers on that team, you couldn't afford to short change everyone else, Ovechkin would get freed up, and his production would increase.

“We really took [Capitals star forward Alex] Ovechkin away the whole power play," said Muller back in the 2010 playoffs. "We played man on man with him and forced the other four guys to beat us four-on-three.”

That's fine if the four other guys are Backstrom and a few other bozos, but if the other four guys are Pavel, Hank, Kronwall, and Franzen you'd get buried.

Good coaching on Mueller's part, but if Washington had a deeper team he couldn't have used that strategy successfully.

I don't believe you should spend that much money in the cap era for a goal scoring specialist. You need your best players to be versatile, Ovechkin is a dynamic goal scorer, and I would love him on my team for maybe 6-7 million. But 9.5 takes away a very solid player. I'd take Kronwall+Filpulla over Ovechkin any day.

If Ovechkin can ever get back to a 60 goal pace, then he might be worth that, but right now he is just a very good player.

Forwards are not available!!!!! I mean top 6 talent is not available. Tampa and Flordia don't want to trade with us because of the move. JBouw gives us the best 6 in the league. Do it then bring up the kids. Sheahan and Tartar. Get Helm back, maybe get Bert back. Big team and tough to play against.

Cammalleri has been playing pretty good in CGY. If Feaster is looking to change the thought process in Calgary on how that team is built and what they will do, he will bomb the roster. J-Bo, Cammy, and even Kipper could be available.

Does anyone have reliable information about what the condition on the pick is? The only things I've seen have been the conflicting speculation here (that he needs to play 5 games - not sure if there's a real source) and the tweet mentioned from TPLHockey (Huskins would need to re-sign with Philly - no idea if this source is reliable).

According to NHL.com, he has to re-sign with Philly before Oct. 1st. Though it's a 7th-round pick, so really nothing to get excited about anyway...

Even if we had need for Kiprusoff---and we don't---he has openly stated that if he is traded, he won't report to the team.

He won't report to any team? Why not? I'm not saying he would be desirable to a contender. But, a trade would be kipper's only chance at winking a cup. He must really like calgary.

He and his wife just had a kid, and they are settled in Calgary.

I don't know why I didn't think of that. I have to give him props then. That's pretty cool of kipper to put his family before his personal accomplishments. It can't be easy knowing you came so close to winning it all but never will.

Back on topic. I like Huskins and wish him the best. Hopefully he see the ice enough to catch someone's eye and land a job next season.

While checking out all the rumors of Philly going after Jagr, Bouw, and Clowe, I had fell upon this article. Including in it was a quote from Huskins after his first game with the Flyers. This quote had caught me a bit off guard and made me giggle, so I thought i'd share it.

"It was great to be in a game and it's a great environment to play off out there," Huskins said. "It's a fun group to play with. I'm obviously a little rough around the edges in parts after not having played in a while, but overall it's great to be part of a team, part of the winning side."

Must be outstanding days in Philly right about now looking in from the outside, you know.
