Franzen for edler?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

Both have upside(and downside), some dmg issues on both this year.

Similar cash.

Nucks need scoring and wings need better defense with better play out of the own zone.

I Think it could benefit both teams and it´s a realistic come thru deal.

Btw, i dont understand thoose saying wings should go for scorers, aka vanek etc. Besides it´s for the moment totally unrealistic in regards of what you have to give up in value and in cap.

Wings are stacked with scoring in dats, Zetterberg, tatar, Nyqvist, alfie, helm and has guys like pulkinen and mantha in the pipeline.

What they need is defensemen with some size/physicality, that can get the puck out of the zone in a constructive fashion and chip in offensively and edler is a name with that potential.

Actually it's kind of odd this speculation was posted up, last night I was talking with a couple of friends of mine that live in Vancouver and are both big nucks fans. They started talking about hearing on the local radio station that the Red Wings had interest in Edler and had inquired with the team. One brought it up and the other confirmed that he heard the same kind of rumor going around.

Take it as you will, it's just word of mouth from an unconfirmed source, but this rumor (not involving Franzen or any Wings player names mentioned) does have a little bit of validity for the sake of it being a rumor.

EDIT: After browsing around a bit, found a few sort of recent articles also pertaining to the rumor, figured i'd share.

With Franzen's injury I'm just surprised someone would want him and that contract

I agree, it's not an ideal time to trade a player when they have been out with injury for an extended period of time, especially a concussion.

One of those articles did say there was an offer with "three pieces" but Vancouver wanted a 4th which inevitably ended the talks at that time. I don't think a 1 for 1 scenario would be the kind of deal on the table here.

@mabus: That article was from November, and if I recall correctly I seen Nyquists name in a lot of trade rumors...

I agree a 1for1 deal is probably not an option, but nyqs value has significantly risen since then, but im thinking he's off the table for a trade with the other kids.

Good finds on the article btw.

Whether you want Franzen here or not, I don't think he's going anywhere.

He's too valuable to us(when healthy) and if we traded him away we wouldn't get that same value back given his injury history.

Plus the whole idea of him retiring and sticking us with that cap hit would be problematic.

And for those who are gonna say his new team would be responsible for it, its part of the new cba with those long term deals being the responsibility of the team that signed them, which is why every team was afforded two compliance buy outs.

However, since the kovalchuk retirement, I'm a little questionable on that.

Was his cap hit wiped from njs books because he left the league?

Or was I just misinformed as to the cap responsibilities on such deals?

Straight up, that's an absolute steal for the Red Wings. I imagine the Canucks would demand much more in return, even though Edler's value is probably down since last summer.

Probably going to be tough to convince another team to take on a player still out with lingering concussion symptoms too.

Actually this seem to draw closer. As i´ve stated it makes sense on both hands.

It´s risky on both hands, but there is also potential of upside on both.

Speculation that he may want to go to CBJ (went to OSU). I know he's from Livonia but seriously don't like that guy. Saw him and Chris Conner at a tigers game two summers ago, he's tall but honestly not that big. Makes me think his physicality is overrated

Detroit needs more guys who are hard to play against. Everyone hated Chelios and Hull before they got here, and I guarantee Konstantinov would have been public enemy #1 if he hadn't been a Wing.

I just want to point out that Dan Cleary has been scratched from the lineup for the last seven games. We have also gone 5-1-1 in that time. Coincidence? I think not. OK, I'm done strumming my one-stringed guitar.

....and your point is?
