I hate Quincey more than anything

He's the easiest player for my buddies to chirp on the Wings next to the typical Cleary/Sammy/Bert

BUT

Remember when Ericsson was signed to that contract back in 2011? It was the same thing, we thought we'd let him walk, ends up getting a huge raise. There was a lot of backlash, the forum went nuts, but it ended up working out. Seems unlikely it'll be this way for Quincey but one can only hope...

Nope.

Ericsson was 24 at the time I believe and hadn't peaked. There was still a lot of room for development and improvement.

Quincey is almost 29. What you see, is what you're gonna get until he starts winding down in his mid 30's.

What's even more scary is that he played as s***ty as he did in a CONTRACT YEAR.

You play to win, not to be competitve.

So we don't win? I hate to break it to you, but we aren't going to win the cup every year. We didn't when we could spend like drunk wallstreeters', and certainly not in a cap era like now. We are two seasons removed from a GREAT year. 4 years from our last finals appearence. We always make the playoffs.

Someone stated it perfect earlier in that Holland perception is a victim of his own success in this cap era. People want perfection & deep playoff runs yearly and don't seem to see the teams that are winning cups BESIDES us have tanked in recent years.

Ok I don't like Quincey either, but for all of you who think he can do no good and is the spawn of satan, here's somes stats.

Only RW D-man to play the full 82 games

2nd best takeaway to giveaway ratio among D-men on the team

3rd in hits and blocked shots among RW D-men (even when pro rated)

3rd in SH time on ice per game among our D-men

Advanced stats aren't good though if you give those kind of things credit

Hate to say it, but these don't make me feel any better about the signing. He stayed healthy, that is a good thing for our team sure. 3rd in SH time on a team where 4 or maybe 5 D-men play on the SH isn't impressive, especially when the Wings were middle of the pack for killing penalties, and Quincey lead the team with 88 penalty minutes. Not to mention his atrocious 0.13 ppg, compared to his 0.40 ppg with COL/LAK.

He flat-out doesn't fit in with this club. That's why he hasn't had the production here that he did with other teams. I really do believe he's hurting Smith as a partner too. Watch whenever Smith wants to jump into the play, Quincey will try to do the same and they'll both get caught out of position.

He did not cost the team double digit games single handedly.

Yeah, someone did the statwork last season. There were direct giveaway goals from Quincey in something like 15 games that were decided by a goal or so. I'd say that's single-handedly. He was remarkably consistent in his ability to be the last guy to touch a puck before being scored on.

You can make stats say a lot of things. I'm sure lots of players had similar gaffes, but they're not KFQ so they aren't picked up on.

What shocks me most is that there are actually some people defending this signing.

Whether you think Quincey totally sucks or is OK, I think anyone that actually watches hockey and still has firing brain cells can agree that there is no way in HELL that is Quincey worth $4.25 mil.

I've never been one to jump on the Holland hate bandwagon, nor do I hate him now, but I seriously have to wonder what the hell he was thinking with this signing.

To even bring him back to begin with was a dumb move, but to then sign him to another 2 years and give him a RAISE on top of that is beyond comprehension to me.

You're right about stats, but I disagree. There's a reason we all noticed it with Quincey and the stats upheld it. I mean, we all just didn't decide to hate Quincey for no reason. He's bad, and the stats support it. And last year we all felt like he was hurting the team so badly that someone thought to look up this particular stat. Maybe other players just don't suck so badly so no one looks up the stat, but I'm sure no one on the Wings can boast that kind of stat.

They should start tracking the reverse of a game winning goal stat. It happens to everyone a few times no doubt, but double-digits is bad. Especially all over a three month span, which I think it was.

Quicney is overpaid, yes. But it is just 2 years. This contract is nowhere near as awful as Samuelsson's a couple years back. Don't care what anyone says. Short contracts always result is being overpaid. Thems the breaks. But if I had to choose between having Quincey come back or Kindl come back, it would be Quincey any day of the damn week. I will not defend how bad he was early in the season. But with how solid he was beyond that, having him back is a lot less of a risk than having 2 rookies playing at the same time in an already young defense. What happens when an injury inevitably happens? Have half the dmen be rookies?

I highly doubt Holland is just sitting on his ass waiting for the season to start. There is no doubt in my mind he is still trying to find that top 4 dman. This signing is just something to fall back on . Not the end of the world in my opinion. The cap hit doesn't even matter. It's not like that money was gonna be spent on a UFA when they already went elsewhere.

For those blaming Quincey single handedly for double digit losses, you're assuming the Wings would have won each of those games he didn't give up a costly turnover. Hardly the case at all, as last season's inexperienced Wings found many other ways to lose games. Like I said before though, I'm not defending how bad he was early on. He was terrible. But once he and Smith were broken up, they both got worlds better.

If Quincey could play like he did the last 3-4 weeks of last season, I'd actually be pretty happy with him on the team.

The key is no more Smith/Quincey pairing. Keep them apart, along with a healthy Ericsson and the defense is already a lot better than late season. Not even counting the fact that DeKeyser and Smith will only improve.

While I don't think Holland is done with the defense at all, even if all that happens is getting rid of Kindl and bumping Lashoff down to #7, the defense is much improved. Because once Q and Smith were split up, the issue was always the 3rd pairing.

That is not going to happen until 3-4 weeks before the end of his contract.

I don't know, while I'm not a Holland basher or a doom and gloom type, this just has the feel of Free Agency 2012, the sequel. I just don't like the "we'll be better because we'll have less injuries" is just something you can't ever count on. I don't think Kyle Quincey is the worst defenseman ever, but yet I still can't process that he's worth 4.5 million either. Did anyone else even want him? It was like with Samuelsson. He got a two year deal for 3 million over 2 years and a NTC when it didn't seem as though there was a whole lot of league interest in him. Same with Tootoo, Bertuzzi, Colaiocovo

We can't know for sure, but the fact that they went from no negotiations to a signed contract in a matter of an hour or two makes me think there wasn't a whole lot of prior interest in Quincey around the NHL.

That's an interesting point. Why don't you think that pairing works? In a sense, Quincey doesn't produce offense so he "must be" a defensive defensemen. Yet he doesn't pair well with Smith because he sucks at being a defensive defenseman. Which kind of made me think.. who actually pairs well with Quincey? In my mind... nobody? Maybe Ericsson... but boy is that D pairing a couple of fat rooted trees. Probably a huge reason why nobody wanted this contract is because he doesn't fit well with anybody. What kind of "role" does KFQ play? He doesn't hit, he doesn't score, he's not overly gifted in his own zone. He just sort of does nothing out there.

Just one of those things where 2 players do not mesh. Can't be explained, but sometimes it happens. Quincey is good defensively, it just took him a frustratingly long time to show that. He also put up points a little more consistently once he got over the all around awfulness. Not saying he was scoring a lot, but he chipped in from time to time. My guess he is either paired with Dekeyser or he is on the 3rd pairing while still playing 20 minutes per game.

I also still think a trade happens to bring in the puck mover we all wanna see. Keeping Quincey just gives Holland flexibility in making the right deal. Whether that be during the summer, or during the season. In the end, he couldn't go into the season with 2 rookies on defense. And really, who else out there is as solid as Quincey was before returning to Detroit? Sure they could have gotten someone else. But what's to say they wouldn't struggle like Quincey has while adjusting to a new team? He overpaid for less risk. But being just 2 years, it's fine. I'd understand the fury if it were a longer deal at that price. But at 2 years, he isn't hurting the team. He is a capable defenseman. Not the ideal signing, but reliable when you look passed the early struggles. This is not an old man Sammy contract. That contract was far worse.

We have NO idea what negotiations went on with Quincey prior to his signing. He may have had an if/then scenario in place with the Wings prior to hitting the market and that may have been a factor in the timing of his agreement

I don't know that there was...don't know that there wasn't. I find it laughable that terms like "panic" and "desperation" are being used as if the people posting have some kind of insight re the mental state of Ken Holland. Hell...you don't even know if the plan was to re-sign Quincey all along even if a guy like Boyle said "yes"...he had the room to do both. You might be in a panic...you might feel a sense of desperation, feel free...it's your right as a fan.

I agree, it's the raise that bothers me much more than that we resigned him, 4.25 for Quincey is just insane and he is now one of the best paid players on the team...
Other players who are at most slightly better got similar contracts. That's just what the market dictated. I would have signed him anyway, but that's me.

Or they had been talking since the season was over and KFQ wanted to stay so he didn't push too hard.

Could be, but I thought I remembered reading the week after we were eliminated that they didn't anticipate Quincey returning. They were going to offer him a contract, but it sounded like they were going to low-ball him. So I guess I just assumed it was a low-ball offer that Quincey didn't consider, hence no negotiations. Then, the July 1st Panic hit and it was all "We'll pay you whatever you want!"

Right...ecause you were there and knew that there was this sudden rush of outright panic...

It's pretty plausible speculation. Besides, Holland has a track record of going back to players he has a history with out of desperation or lack of creativity. Quincey wasn't very sought after -- I think most general managers are astute enough to realize someone coming off Quincey's season isn't all that valuable of a commodity.

If it wasn't panic, then I assume you believe that Holland had some intention of keeping Quincey all along? That's just as ridiculous.
