PumpkinEscobar 136 Report post Posted February 7, 2015 Well I think they've got some good prospects at every position and should be covered for the next few years..unless of course Kenny makes a splash and we lose some. There will be some guys with some size available when the Wings pick. Just thankful didn't deal our first 2 picks away because we can add some more to the pipeline
frankgrimes 1,836 Report post Posted February 7, 2015 (edited) So is this still about the draft? Because I don't think anybody will know for sure how many picks the Wings might have and where they are going to pick there is a lot of hockey left. But I definitely think they should put a huge focus on centers and defense.. Wingers and goaltenders can be picked later. Larkin has all the the potential to maybe! become a top 6 center but that doesn't mean he is a surefire to do so. Even if he does wings will need another top 6 center and given that these guys aren't on the market anymore wings have to try developing them. I also think it's unfair to compare future centers to two very good ones (Pasha and the beard). First line centers that can help out the defense too are the exception not the norm and I wouldn't count on finding them again.. So they blow whenever those 2 are gone can only be softened by a much better defense and having a real sniper - hopefully Mantha - as a finisher. RyanBarnes! 293 Report post Posted February 7, 2015 I think the wings will go best player available in the next draft..and they shouldyes, and that player will be Jens Looke.
MasterPavel 115 Report post Posted February 8, 2015 yes, and that player will be Jens Looke. Love love love Lööke, just not as much as Greenway if available. Krsmith, If one of the top 3 dman drop to the mid twenties then sure. After the top 3 there isn't a dman to take until the second round. Why pass up a furture top 6 forward for reaching on a should be end round player?
nyqvististhefuture 1,002 Report post Posted February 8, 2015 (edited) Richdg, the more you say, the less I believe you know about our players and prospects... Sheahan is without a doubt, a legit second line center. He is "on pace" for 41 points in his first full season and I fully expect him to be a 50-60 point producer in this league as early as next season. He is already relied upon to match up against the toughest competition in the league, all while being able to produce at a very reasonable rate. Athanasiou has arguably had the smoothest transition from junior to pro than any player in the Red Wings organization in the past couple decades. He has excelled at every level and continues to impress, but yeah, it's completely reasonable to think he will not make it... So these very promising forward prospects might "stall out" but all those defense prospects are a sure thing right? Why is it that we're inevitably going to lose these forward prospects to trade but not the defense prospects? Is it because, maybe we are much deeper at forward than defense? Huh... Who woulda thunk it?... Final thought. It doesn't matter where we pick in the first round, I trust the Red Wings scouts to get it right, and my bet is on them taking a defenseman. We shall see... Loving sheahan thus far and I hope he is a top 6 guy as you say but I think it's too soon to say for sure that he will be ... Look at nathan mackinnon's struggles this year (and no I'm not comparing him to mackinnon) just saying I wanna see how he performs next year and year after to see for sure if he will be a top 6 guy That being said though he might have to play 3rd line for quite some time next few seasons with datsyuk and z still here and Tatar and nyquist being our leading goal scorers Got high hopes for sheahan though Edited February 8, 2015 by nyqvististhefuture

krsmith17 7,191 Report post Posted February 8, 2015 MasterPavel, who are the top 3 defensemen in next years draft? Noah Hanifin is the undisputed number one guy, who are the other two? Zach Werenski? Ivan Provorov? Oliver Kylington? Jeremy Roy? There's 5 solid D that will definitely go in the first round, then there's another handful that could possibly be had later in the first. A defenseman is what we should be looking at taking and I fully expect Holland to go that route unless there is an absolute steal at forward.
MasterPavel 115 Report post Posted February 8, 2015 Provorov and Carlsson are lefties, the others will definitely be gone. Roy is small, and Spencer is a right handed Kyle Quincy. We need either one of them like Franzen needs another concussion. However there will be value in the 2nd and beyond. You don't pass on a Greenway or Lööke if available in the mid twenties for a dman that could be replaced with very little drop off in the 2nd. But carry on with your dman agenda 1 jimmyemeryhunter reacted to this

krsmith17 7,191 Report post Posted February 9, 2015 I'll admit, I know very little about the upcoming draft class. That goes for this year and every year for that matter. Of course there are always a few players I'm familiar with before draft day, like the top 5-10 picks, as well as a few players around where the Wings are drafting. I knew all about Anthony Mantha prior to the 2013 draft, and that's exactly who I, along with just about every other Wings fan wanted. I just find it funny when so many people act like they are experts when it comes to evaluating these 17-18 year old, undrafted kids. Chances are, there are very few people on here that have actually watched any of these players regularly, to have any basis for an evaluation, let alone all of them to compare players. For the most part, people are basing their entire opinion on these players, on a paragraph scouting report, and that's best case scenario. Others are just looking at their bios and looking at height and weight and thinking, "wow, that kid is big, he must be good"... Other than stature and point totals, there's not a whole lot else to base an opinion on, unless you're fortunate enough to be able to watch these kids on a nightly basis... MasterPavel, the Wings have lacked right shooting players (both defensemen and forwards) for years now, and they proved last season when they picked 6 left shooting forwards, that they will pick the best player available, despite their handedness... Roy is small? 6'0", 185lbs. is small for a 17 year old? Okay... But Jens Looke who is virtually the exact same size, is a player that we cannot pass over? I don't know anything about this kid, but he has 6 points in 34 SHL games this season... What's so special about this kid? If Roy and Looke are both available when we pick, my non-expert pick is Roy for sure. Also, I'd love to know what gives you the impression that Spencer is "right handed Kyle Quincey"?... And personally, I think a right handed Quincey would be a great addition to our prospect pool. I will carry on with my "dman agenda"... because that's our biggest need... 1 number9 reacted to this

MasterPavel 115 Report post Posted February 10, 2015 Lööke is 17 plays in a professional men's league which is why his points are down. I have not seen him play obviously outside of highlight clips but he looks the part of a future top 6 playmaker. I live in Plymouth, Michigan so I have seen Matt Spencer play when Peterborough came to town. Am I a pro scout no and I may be wrong about him. He is tough kid, but imo if he doesn't grow his best attribute will be limited at the next level. If Spence is available in the 2nd which is possible then hell yeah let's do it. I have also watched Greenway play, and while raw I thought he looked good with and without the puck. He has a ton of upside from what I have seen and read. HoweFan 74 Report post Posted February 10, 2015 He is good. He's ranked in the 15-25 range by every scouting service. He's a 6'5" tough RH defenseman. Isn't that what we need?
