I suppose he also put something into his coffee. :P How many goals did Roy let in that night again ?

The final score was what....10-2 I think?  I loved how the fans cheered for Roy when he saved one.  That's still one of my favorite games ever to watch.

Dekeyser was never really going anywhere else but Detroit. I guess there was an outside chance, but he said himself that there never really was any other contenders.

regarding Welsh, yes I do like all the other signings and I said Welsh could maybe be one if those signings next season when even more kids get promoted. He may only have 25 NHL games, but he us a solid AHL'r would could do spot injury time in the NHL. He would be very valuable within the organization as will be all of the signings this summer who may or may not see a Detroit uniform this season as well. Depth is a good thing.

Justin Schultz was a holdout just to get where he was for his "sweepstakes".  I'm not sure anyone should be surprised he's not re-signed yet.  He went to Edmonton cause he knew with his extremely subpar defensive side of his game, he needed a team with god awful defense to be able to make the NHL roster without any competition.  Sure he's good on the PP, but aside from that his game is complete ass.

If we have injuries on D, I'd much prefer seeing Sproul, Ouellet and Marchenko get the nod.  Those 3 will be a big part of the Wings future no doubt and a 10 game sample for each this year could definitely be a good thing for the organization, hopefully with benchings of Kindl and Q as opposed to injuries.

In Topic: Confused on the direction of this team going forward

I personally love the direction this team is going. I think the plan for a few years has been to get younger, due in part to the salary cap, as well as bigger, evident by our past few drafts. We have a lot to get excited about as fans. There is going to be a ton of talent coming up over the next few years, and a lot of these kids have the size and strength to go along with the speed and skill. Sure, we have struck out on the past 2 of 3 free agency periods, and we haven't really done anything at the trade deadline, but I do believe there is a plan in place and Kenny sees the bigger picture. Unlike most fans that are very eager for the quick fix, Ken is very patient and knows that it's going to take time to get back to the top, he know what it takes to build a contender, and doing so without ever having to tank is pretty remarkable.

It also helps that we have the best scouts in the NHL.

not sure if anyone posted that Gardiner re-signed with Toronto for $4.05M...he was a RFA defenseman.  So, this will probably be the starting point for DeKeyser.  He will more than likely get a similar contract.

Gardiner has more than 1 season under his belt.  DeKeyser should get the exact same contract as Tatar.

First of all, you're overplaying your hand a bit.  Tatar was a regular in the lineup after 9 games...so it's not like those three guys were all getting huge playing time for the first half of the season...they weren't.  After the first ten games any two of the three were scratched on a given night.

Secondly, that doesn't really address my point anyway.  Cleary, Bertuzzi, and Samuelsson weren't the reason we got butchered by Boston in the playoffs.  They weren't the reason we blew a 3-1 series lead against Chicago the year before that.  They weren't the reason we couldn't beat San Jose for two years.  And they definitely weren't the reason we got embarrassed by Nashville in 5 games.

But here's the kicker...neither were injuries.  In only one of those series (Boston) did injuries play a significant role.  There are fundamental issues with this team that haven't been addressed in a LONG time.  Acting like those issues have been resolved because we let a couple of frequently scratched third and fourth liners walk is the equivalent to burying your head in the sand.

Again, at no point after the first ten games last season did Cleary, Sammy, and Bert regularly play for our team at the same time.  On any given night, maybe one of them played.  But rarely two, and definitely not all three.

Tatar was a regular in the line up yes, but was getting garbage ice time to start.  It wasn't until Sheahan and Jurco came up that things started to pick up for the Wings in a positive way.  So from the start of the season to when the team got interesting, we added Tatar, Sheahan, Nyquist and Jurco.  With how well those guys played when they came up, it makes you feel a little better if say 3 Dmen go down and we call up Ouellet, Sproul and Marchenko.  Which goes back to my point about teaching Mantha and Jurco to go to the dirty areas for goals....Blashill is the reigning coach of the year in the AHL, so I have a lot of faith that the guys placed in his hands to start the year are going to be NHL players that can play NHL minutes when they get their call.

I wasn't arguing your point Kip.

I was only saying that this year's team should have less plugs than last year.

But yes, if this team continues to play on the outside, have crappy D, suck on special teams, and have average goaltending then they're screwed.

But, an improved Smith and DeKeyser combined with hopefully more Ouellett/Marchenko and less Kindl/Lashoff, and the D should improve.

The small forwards should get stronger.

Jimmy has nowhere to go but up, after last year.

And our small forwards include Z and Dats....not worried about them at all, and Tatar, Nyquist, Weiss and Helm assuming that anything under 6'0 is small.  Other than that, our forward core is getting bigger and with the way the draft has been going lately, we will have a team comparable to LA size wise soon.
